Bad Points: I am generally happy with the service i get.
General comments: I am with the Co-op because of its ethical policy. I see this as paramount. The service has been good enough and efficient enough to run my business for years now. I don't have any problems with banking online. Although it says there are technical problems. I never have any. I am a small business and don't seem to have excessive charges. Any cash is paid into the local post office which is closer than the nearest town. And cheques are paid in by post. No problems for years!

You have to use the post office to bank cash because their branch network is so small. 70p per credit. (They closed the Guildford branch soon after I opened our account there.)
£3 month service charge. 17p/electronic credit/debit, 23p cheques. providing min balance is £1000, otherwise 70p per item.
Note: telephone banking takes 4 days to arrive, but internet banking only 3.
You can't use the Coop supermarkets for business banking - only personal accounts. ...

My final straw with the Co-op banks dreadfully unreliable internet banking service came when the site was down for TWO WHOLE WEEKS in the run up to Christmas 2007. I had to resort to paying all our suppliers and contractors by cheque and apologise profusely that they wouldn't have cleared funds in time for the festive season. I'm shifting our business account to one that actually has a functioning internet banking service that doesn't let you down when you most need it.

Only moved because they were recommended by Federation of Small Business and free banking. Transferring my accounts (business and personal) took ages and they blamed everyone but themselves. Internet banking is often unavailable in the morning. I incurred charges because I hadn't realised transfers between accounts (business and personal) had to be made the day before items were presented for payment. Despite writing asking for a refund as a goodwill gesture, I got a standard letter basicall ...

The bad points say it all really. When I was having problems with the Co-operative Bank online banking, trying to make a BACS transfer, the support guy who was very nice, said it was better for me not to do any transfers on a Wednesday or Friday, or in the morning as everyone wants to go on then.
Well, my business needs something more than a part time, unreliable service.

The Co-Operative bank may be ethically inclined, but they are not providing a good banking service. You really have to want to try and be ethical to stick with them, but at the end of the day, the service they provide, or more appropriate, didn't provide, is unethical.

I tried to move all my accounts from cater Allen to the Co-operative Bank because of the 'ethical banking'. They took an age to set up my business account, then made several mistakes, telling me differant stories about who was responsible for them. I gave up and reverted to Cater Allen. I am now moving my personal account away as well, but only as far as Smile. The specific gripe was difficulties with a badly thought out online security regime.

There always seems to be a lot of cashiers in the branch - that is until you want them to do something - then there is only one who will help you. Always a massive queue, and if you only want to pay in cheques this can be very frustrating as you can often wait as long as 30 mins, while the counter manager taps aimlessly away at her computer. Was told that all banks have queues when questioned.
