Applying for and setting up a HSBC Card has been near impossible, with the application process taking around a month. Their email notification system is backwards - you log in online to check where the status is, which then triggers and email to tell you to log in online. Dealing with customer service on the phone was just as difficult. Once approved, card activated, have had a lot of trouble activating online services, being run around in circles, directed to the website, which directs you... (read more)

Keep in mind that I should be a top customer, I have been with them since it was Midland Bank and regularly put six figures through each year. HSBC are hard to deal with on the phone and have no started charging for basic telephone banking. HSBS are impossible to deal with online, their apps for ipad and iPhone do not work. It is hard to imagine how a global brand like HSBC can tolerate its customers being subjected to the business account banking experience that it offers in the UK. I have been a customer on the private banking side of HSBC for 15 years and only have praise for the customer service I have received there over the years. On the business banking side the service suffers from failing utterly to get even the basics of service right: it is well nigh impossible to reach anyone over the telephone if... (read more)

Followed by multiple payments for what used to be free payments into the account (You would think they would be happy to see you put you money in?! Not bill you for the privilege!!! Idiots) . During various (!) chat contacts/calls with HSBC the situation of the company has been explained (in detail!). Namely, a UK limited owned by foreign shareholders and with foreign directors. As an online application was not possible, the advice was that a company director should come to the UK to open the account. The question whether any office could be visited was answered with "yes". An appointment was not necessary. However, after traveling to the UK to open the HSBC account, it turned... (read more)

HSBC used to have a free business bank account for small businesses. It was a nice gesture for the many businesses - like mine - that make a healthy but modest profit every year. As long as you managed it online, then most transactions were free. After all - they make a stinking profit by holding the money and handing out 0% interest and then passing over vast penalties if you go overdrawn. Now they have made a sudden decision to start charging £5.50 a month and to charge for transactions... (read more)

Then, a further fee of £64 for unauthorised over draft use because of their original fee! The old standing order was to transfer funds to another hsbc account in my name. HSBC Business banking costs us about $25 a month in fees simply for maintaining three accounts. Any time we want to actually do something with our firm's money, there is also a fee associated with that. And their exchange rates are really terrible. Frankly HSBC are not SME friendly. They make it difficult to do business, they call their credit card, "lending" but don't allow you to pay it down early as credit is locked irrespective of early payment. So if you owe 5000 on a 5K credit limit and pay it down before the due date, they take your money but effectively lock your card until the expected payment date. Thus even if you owe then zero you cannot use your card until the new month start ????? who ever thought that system up is a dumbo. (read more)
