The news sucks on AOL...it’s all stories and democratic views just like most all of the news media!

“fridge”

They were very quick and efficient. Kept me up-to-date on delivery time and how far away they were. Unpacked fridge outside door so no messy cardboard inside. Advised on using fridge. Highly recommended. Your user website for reviews is very difficult to navigate however, more people would review if you didn't have to activate account, log in, need a user name etc.

“12 years of AOL ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by asha301193 on 04/09/2016

For 12 years I have enjoyed and despised using AOL. The main reason I stuck with AOL through all these years was because my AOL email address was my universal address throughout my childhood, and my family in the states could contact me through there. However, it is with slight regret, overwhelmed with mass frustration that I write this review on AOL and the shocking, offensive, and exhausting experience I have encountered as a loyal user. With a mass accumulation of personal emails, family contacts and pictures sitting in my AOL account, I encountered a remote account sign in, of which I was unaware. AOL advised me to change my password (pretty standard), so I clicked change password (due to unrecognised access). My account was immediately blocked, once again pretty standard. Here is where things fell downward faster than the AOL’s valuation from the height of the dot com bubble, to the measly Verizon bid for an internet ‘pioneer’ who have passed their sell-by date but still manage to sell milk (their products), to old people stuck in their ways. When I created my account in 2004, I was sceptical about putting my name, email and home number of the internet, as the internet was still blowing up at the time. As a result, I opted for a random fake name, which I don’t remember, and a security question, which I do remember the answer to. As the “Change Password” page required both the security question and answer to match the name, I decided to email customer support, who state they get back to you in 24-72 hours. At the time of writing it has been 1,034 hours and I have sent 3 emails and received nothing but an auto-reply. Good thing AOL has a customer service line, which is particularly valuable only if you live in the states… as the name suggests, it is indeed America On-Line. Nevertheless, as my job contract and other personal information was being sent to my AOL email, I decided to swallow my pride and pay £1.12p per minute to speak to a representative, whom I will discuss my experience with next. He greeted me before asking what my issue was. After I explained that I knew everything about the account apart from the name, I suggested a list of options on how he could help me. I even stated the recovery email linked to my AOL account and asked if he could send a password reset to that email. All in all was a human following the online webpage procedure. A robot. He said we could not proceed unless I could verify the full name on the account, despite me answering everything else correctly, including all supplemental information, as well as the emails housed in my inbox, and sent. By this point I had spent £29.12p on the phone call and he said, “Can you just email the support address please?”. Complete disregard for my position, he was less helpful than a static web-page. I could also hear him eating crisps and talking about breaking bad to his colleague as he put me on hold to speak to “technical support”. A lot of people believe outsourcing call centres to Asia is costing jobs, but quite frankly, he was a prime example of why some companies need fresh labour. After stating to me “you should know your details” and “it’s your account, you should know what you put in”, my patience was wearing thin. Nevertheless, I prevented myself from cursing and politely hung up the phone. So after all of that, I decided to accept the reality that the AOL service is much like a dwindling camp fire. It may be nice for a bit, but it will die out fairly fast and leave you with a mess to clean up. From the height of its dot com era valuation to its sale to Verizon, I truly see why AOL has fallen over the years. I am disgusted with my experience with AOL, I have lost all communications for 12 years due to minor account issues which cannot be resolved due to the nature of AOL’s static procedures, and spent c.£30 talking to a guy who was more interested in Breaking Bad than the person paying for his “help”. I would strongly advise AGAINST using AOL, and can endorse its lack of support personally if anybody would like an honest review from a customer who has used the service for 12 years. Thanks AOL for, well, not much.

AOL is a good provider - no question - long in the market etc.... but you are forgetting about all the good stuff the moment when you cancel your membership. I cancelled my membership 1.5 years (yes... 18 month ago). I paid another 5 month and don't you think I got my money back. I called... and called ... and called a Hotline a few times and verified ... and verified.. and verified....

written by GazzRev on 05/12/2008

On the whole, I think AOL are ok. Iv never lost my connection. Have always been able to get on line when ever I wanted. Download speeds have been close to what they say (compared to other ISP's). i.e. I am on 8mb & managed around an average 6.5mb.

However, I have just signed a 12month contract for 8mb unlimited download + Unlimited phone calls for £12.99 (after changing from my AOL Broadband Gold £19.99 per month to Broadband Silver £12.99 per month).
I have been assured my broadband connection will remain the way it has always been at 8mb Unlimited. But with the addition of the telephone call package (FREE) & a new wireless router/modem. (not yet received).
I just hope I have not made a mistake by staying with AOL.

Fairly unhindered internet access... I personally found AOL Email just too much hard work when I got hooked up with them. I'd rather poke my own eyeballs out than sign up with them again. I do not recommend AOL.com for an email address site, their software, e-mail, customer service, technical support, cancellation service, competitor web page blocking (BE there broadband, I could not access it though AOL)...

AOL software has caused me major problems. I persevered with AOL for over 8 years and introduced many people inc my family to them, and I finally changed to BT.
Trying to get a mac code from AOL took over 3 days of trying.

Overall it is a good well executed site and provides News, Sports and just about whatever interests you as well as your email in a one page format. I find it fast and comfortable to use and I trust it more than most of the other email sites.

“AOL is one of, if not, the biggest Internet service...”

☆☆☆☆☆

written by JamesG830 on 28/02/2007

AOL is one of, if not, the biggest Internet service provider in the world. How do they manage to do it? The answer is simple: Marketing.
AOL knows how to attract customers by constantly mailing free AOL CD's to people's homes where they offer free Internet trial and you can hardly buy one PC magazine where a AOL CD doesn't pop out.
When it comes to the good points, AOL's Home Page is exceptional.
Everything is on the same page: email box, news, Instant messenger, free pop-up blocker, a very good Tool for easy access to web sites etc.
AOL's search engine is powered by Goggle, which is known as one of the best search engines - but on the other hand you can always just use google with any Internet Service provider!
The email box is very good, nice to look at and if you want to report junk mail, then there's a button below which says 'Report Spam', just click on it and voila - the junk mail has disappeared and been forwarded to a junk mail office that prevent the spam sender from continuing to send you the ever-annoying junk mail.
AOL also provides a free Pop-up blocker, chat rooms, chat message rooms, private conference rooms and a handy photo uploader, the speed is satisfying.
My partner and I originally signed up for AOL a few years ago for a dial-up connection, my partner did once sign up for another Internet service but made the mistake of simply forgetting to inform AOL for one year and they renewed her 1 year contract.
When I noticed her mistake, I called up AOL but there was no sympathy there. They didn't offer to refund a penny, give us free subscription or knock one single day off the 1-year renewed contract. I would have expected more sympathy than that.
Around 2003 we upgraded to broadband. AOL provide a Voyager 105 modem, free of charge if you sign up for one year. However, the quality of the 'Reliable, always-on connection Voyager 105' modem is very poor, I cannot count the times when I have tried to go online when the screen appeared 'AOL is not responding'.
I probably did talk more often to their Technical Help Support Line than to my family members!
The Indian based Technical support staff speak very poor English - yet are friendly and helpful. As I'm a patient man who values politeness above poor communication skills, I didn't bother too much, however, I cannot speak up for what others who are less patient than me would say.
There have also been countless complaints from customers that AOL does not send their 'Reliable, always-on connection Voyager 105' replacement modem when the customers ask for it.
The AOL software takes up a lot of space and slows your PC down. In 2006 AOL's software was 'honoured' as the worst software ever by the respected PC magazine PC World:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,125772-page,2/article.html

What is less acceptable is that they do charge extra for calling up their Technical Help Line and you often have to wait on the phone for ages to get help. There are also complaints from deaf people that have to use Typetalk, that phoning them is a nightmare.
One thing did also surprise me; once I couldn't connect to the Internet for more than a day. When I called up their Technical Help Line, they blamed BT and claimed that the 'BT telephone line was down' but when I phoned up BT (I had no problems phoning them?), the BT staff explained to me that this wasn't true and that AOL knows very well that broadband has nothing to do with the telephone line.
When I phoned AOL Help Line again, they admitted that this was true. In other words, I had been lied to.
Now I come to the main point; if you are a current or future subscriber wait until you try to leave AOL and see what fun you have. If you want to cancel online you spend a long time looking for a link for this option as one doesn't exist.
If you want to email any enquiries, no matter if it is cancelling, requests for technical help, complaints etc. just don't bother - they never answer emails.
AOL is notorious for dishonestly continuing to charge people that want to cancel and if you don't believe me - be my guest and take a look at some other comments on this site or do some quick searches on the web.

What I consider the most disgusting thing about AOL is their unfair censorship on their message boards. I used to publish posters there and soon became popular for my articles.
However, AOL censor(ed) interesting posters while they leave bigots that poke insults at others alone - my friends used to publish interesting post but have now left the AOL message boards in disgust. This is simply not fair.
AOL once gave me a warning for talking about my political views despite me not using any swear words. I also once replied to one of the bigots I mentioned earlier and they began to spam me and wouldn't leave me alone - AOL eventually disconnected me.
I wrote a long letter to AOL where I told my side of the story. There are certain bigots that BOAST on the AOL message boards about how they insult others and get away with it.
They insulted me with name calling and swear words for no reason at all and continued to harass my IM/email box ages after they chased me away from the message borders and wouldn't leave my IM/email box alone despite me asking them politely to leave me alone.
I was in the process of writing a book and thanks to AOL's disconnection, I lost several months of hard work linked with my book writing, permission from other authors to refer to their articles etc.
I told AOL that if they think it's all right with them to warn or even ban people for talking about their political views without using one single swear word while they allow bigots to insult and harass others users then something is seriously wrong.
AOL never replied.
AOL is an Internet company that provides a poor Internet connection, blames others for their own technical faults and doesn't value or respect the freedom of speech of its users - while at the same time allowing bigots get away with harassment - simply not worth considering.
I have used BT and do currently use SKY and I guarantee that they are a much better alternative, e.g. I once cancelled my BT Internet subscription and they told me politely that they would cancel my subscription the same day and not charge me one day more - and kept their word.
How I wish that I had stayed with BT instead.
AOL is a big mean machine, which has forgotten about basic customer's rights. But the day will come that David will hit against Goliath and I am one amongst them. As the old saying goes, the bigger they are - the harder they fall.
If you are looking for an honest Internet service provider that doesn't give you a hard time when cancelling your account, sorting out other problems or merely engaging in debates then look elsewhere - AOL is not for you.
But if you do use AOL then I suggest that you cancel your account as soon as possible but expect for your phone call to take a long time - talk to your bank and let them block AOL from taking any more of your money!

written by Angela Goddard on 30/11/2005

As a new user of AOL Broadband, I have found trying to sign up for email impossible. Each time I fill in the form it is rejected. When I was on dial-up I had no problems, but since changing I have been unable to access the page. I have tried using my dial-up address and password, but when it is rejected it doesn't specify which bit is wrong. I've tried using a different password, then a different address. I have tried every combination, but it is always rejected. What am I doing wrong? Even the help button is of no help. How do I get my e mail??
