Sound quality is excellent, Can store about 8,000 mp3 files which should be ample for most folks, can encode directly from any source with an earphone socket, without the need for a pc, although you do need a PC if you want to name them. i converted all my vinyl's with it, great player !!! It did freeze occasionally when I first had it [which is about 5 years now,] but I downloaded a different firmware which solved the problem 5,323 is the firmware version I now use, Multi - Chanel Labs now d ...- Read Dave Cox's review (128 words)

I bought a Xclef HD-500 20GB Jukebox MP3 player 2 years ago. I am now on my fourth one; 3 having been replaced free of charge by the supplier. Every kind of problem has occurred: software failure, controls failure, and lastly the power plug has broken away. Don't forget these faults are on 3 different players.
It is no great surprise that the product has been made obsolete. It is a pity as the iPod is not the answer.
We are still waiting for the perfect MP3 player.- Read stephen page's review (99 words)

However, as the MP3's mounted up I invested in a 2.5" disk and took my player apart and installed this instead. Now, the player is obsolete, but still available on eBay and some sites that stocked it when in production; and Digital Mind Corporation, the American wing of the XClef distribution offers it with different sizes of disk all the w ...- Read evansncl's review (800 words)

I have had an Xclef HD-500 20GB Jukebox player for 8 months, tried the Creative Zen models for a change, resold on e-bay after 2 weeks. The reason? The sound is awful in comparison to a HD500, if you play anything with any bass it distorts badly. The HD500 can handle whatever you play, loud enough to make your ears bleed, and the sound quality does not even flinch. A friend has a 'trendy' i-pod, I have tried it, it too sounds tinny compared to the Xclef. Do yourself a favour if you are in the ma ...- Read foxinthebox2005's review (145 words)

Reasons to Buy the Xclef HD-500 20GB Jukebox:
You can read text files of the screen.
Can be upgraded to bigger hard drive - takes laptop 3.5" drives.
Easy to use.
Cheap for what it is.
Can encode straight from a hi-fi, no need for a PC.
Big, clear display.
Can organise data just like a Hard drive.
Reasons not to:
Scroller is a cheap plastic slide on the side, feels weak. Not a patch on the Ipod system.
For an Mp3 Player it is big - just over 5" in Height and 3" wide and 3/4" deep.
