We had a special family meal here and after reading the other reviews on this site we were wondering if it was a good move? The result was a thoroughly fantastic meal, accompanied by great service. The food was tasty and hot,the kids ate the whole plate!!!Would recommend anyone to go,and would definatley go again another time.

13 Oct 09: Arrived in early evening; nice atmosphere, clean premises, view of the estuary; reviewed entire menu.

Ordered medium done sirloin steak with Diane sauce and a side order of home made garlic bread, followed by fudge chocolate cake and a hot liqueur drink.

Steak was chewy (bordering on tough) with gristle; garlic bread had slight aroma of plastic which was off-putting, cake was so, so, hot drink was mildly warm.

Left after 7 p.m. and within 1 hour had 2 bob bits into the early a.m. ...

Seated at 7.30 in the halfway house, southend on sea, starter at 8.15, main 9.15, reason - everyone ordering from menu not carvery. 2 asked for medium rare steaks, received over well done, returned, 2nd try was carved from cow to plate - from one extreme to another! Service was friendly but kitchen was worse than useless! Good news they came out with birthday cake for my father and sang happy birthday to him.

awful. as previous review there was not a good choice of meats, vegetables were disgusting with a crustlike film over them. everything was lukewarm and the chef did not seem to give two hoots - it felt like 'take it or leave it'. the Halfway House service was very good and we did feel for the waitresses. the starters also were pleasant but would not go again.

Seven of us visited the Halfway House, Southend-on-Sea today at 1.45, we appreciate the fact it was bank holiday and therefore was busy, but to wait 40 minutes for 4 prawn cocktails and two garlic breads was not on, when the starters arrived we all enjoyed them. Two of us went for the Carvery, big mistake, the turkey had run out so we had beef and gammon, the beef was running low and the slices were so thin you could see the plate, there were hardly any vegetables and no potatoes, the chef h ...

I took my family to the Halfway house on Saturday 2nd May, and I discovered they had a new menu. I tried the Pan-fried Chicken and my wife had the Jumbo Pepper, which was quite litterally, huge. I expected to see a pepper, but not one as big as the plate! . One of my kids had a Kids Lasagne and my other child had the kids Spegetti Bolegniese. I must say, I was impressed in the speed the food was delievered, and the service was spot-on.

The Halfway House, Southend-on-Sea, looked nice! The service was very poor, we seemed to be forgotten many times, waited 30 minutes for our drinks which we had to order twice. Food was very poor. My partner had the carvery which I believed consisted of out of the packet veg and frozen potatoes, not fresh. My salad looked like it had been thrown the plate. I ordered some bread as a side which didn't turn up until i finished my main!!

Went on Monday eve 6th October. Arrived 7.45 p.m. ordered food for 3 at 8.00 p.m. arrived 9.00 p.m. (I feel this is not acceptable) Bangers and mash with onion (no onion). I had fish and chips, fish translucent. Another dish was quite inedible. I and a friend had ice cream. Dread to think how long the ice cream had apparently been out of the freezer as they were practically liquid.

My friends and I were very disappointed as it spoilt the evening. We noticed that the menu is changing on 7th ...

Went 6th Oct pm. Arrived at 7.45 ordered meal at 8pm it arrived at 9pm. We had fish and chips, the fish was translucent. Sausages and mash with onion. no onion present and another meal that all I can say was inedible. The ice cream had melted when it was served.

We go the 1st Monday of every month for the quiz and usually have a good meal, but this Monday we felt the food was appalling compared to usual. On the way out we spoke to a member of staff who did not seem bothered. We noticed th ...

I have visited the Halfway House in Southend for several years. The food and service has always been excellent. The pub was badly in need of refurbishment and this was completed in April this year. Since the refurbishment I feel the food has gone downhill. I have visited on two occasions both in April and May and complained on both occasions about the food. My granddaughter came to visit and desperately wanted to go as she loved their steak pie and I decided to give them the benefit of t ...

We could not add our bar drinks to our table tab because we didn't have one yet. The starter bar was a waste of time. I agree with the previous comments. No choice half empty and even after requesting that it be topped up the difference was barely noticeable. Also the meat and the vegetables in general were very tired looking and as previously mentioned overcooked.
As soon as 10.30pm arrived we were almost ushered from the restaurant as if we were a nuisance to the cleaning up opereation that h ...

Halfway House: Where do I start? The starter bar had hardly anything on it, in my experience limp lettuce a few prawns and tomatoes. The carvery, beef, was fatty and I found the vegatables to be over cooked. All in all very bland.
Poor service, once seated we were forgotten on two ocassions and had to go and look for someone to serve us.
