General comments: Having seen a brilliant offer on a Citroen C2 for this month, I decided to up my car budget slightly and look into buying a new C2. So, I took myself off to the Manchester dealership on Upper Brook Street to get the details of the offer and do a test drive.
The salesman was brilliant initially. He told me the price was £5995 OTR. He ran through all the features of the car (it was the very basic, bottom of the line 1.1L which is all I need because I'm using it to drive 10 miles into work and back and not much else), told me the price was definite and didn't get scared during the test drive in which I managed to stall the car about 4 times, not being used to the clutch (and being new to driving on a manual transmission).
Since it was the first car I'd tried, and since I had no idea if I could afford the extra money alongside insurance I told him I needed to go home, get an insurance quote, check my budget again and if I wanted to buy it I'd come back in the next day. We even arranged a rough time.
Funny how when I went back the next day suddenly the £5995 price went up because that was the price for a flat colour, and all they could sell me was a metallic at an addition £350. I pointed out that he'd have known that the previous day and I didn't think I should have an extra charge as he'd said I could definitely buy the car at the lower price. He offered to reduce the price of the paint by £100 (to £250). Since that extra cost was NOT in my budget and I didn't like the metallic shades we got up to leave - highly annoyed, I might add - and suddenly he said that maybe there was one or 2 flat colours left in the system but he couldn't check until the Monday as for some reason the entire computer network was shut down on the weekends - you know, the 2 busiest days of the week.
He promised to look for the car in a flat colour and phone me at work on Monday. It is now Wednesday and I have not heard a thing.
I'm frankly not surprised by the sales tactics - he clearly thought if I came back I wanted the car and would be happy to pay that little bit extra - but by the fact that 1) He couldn't be bothered to phone me in the end and that 2) When I asked if I could order the car in a flat red colour and just wait until one came available, apparently even if I paid on the spot and was happy not to get the car until October, they couldn't do it because I'd have to pay the "October price." Even if I was paying for it in July. Surely it's possible to order a car like this as you often have to wait when you buy a new car for delivery (or for it to be built!).
Any way you look at it, this is an appalling way to do business. If you quote a price to someone and say the product is available at that price then you should sell the product at that price, not tack on hidden extras that you didn't inform about at the time someone asked what the full price would be.
And if you're dealing with customers and trying to make a sale and you promise to provide information and phone - then do it.
As of now, I am so annoyed with this particular salesman that even if I decide to buy a Citroen in the future, I will not return to give him my business - I'll find a different dealer.
