Tried payless for the first time because their prices were the lowest. Aside from Customer service being slow - they offer a bare bones car rental service. Make sure you have your third party liability insurance card as well as collision damage waiver from your credit card co. and you can avoid any additional charges. Make sure you inspect your car for all prior damage and report it prior to renting to avoid any future charges. Remember being the cheapest usually comes with less service so don't complain as the staff are probably paid a low wage.

I rented at Payless in Las Vegas, and it went really well (this is our second time renting from them). The only problem we had was that the guy got crabby with me for declining the insurance, gas package, and car upgrade and actually asked me if I had a word other than "no" in my vocabulary which I thought was kind of rude. I was aware I had to prove self coverage, which I did to avoid the $20 daily insurance charge. The line was short, it was quick in getting the car and the return was also very fast. I thought it was weird that a Toyota Corolla was considered mid-size but we got a great price and the car itself was new.

We just rented an economy car from Payless in Denver. This company seems to have very different service and reviews depending where you go but in Denver they are excellent. Bus arrived quickly at the airport, service was quick, we got a new car that worked perfectly. I bid for a low price on Priceline and then declined CDW and insurance because I had both extended on my home car insurance. One small point to note: the additional driver cost is lower if they are your spouse - this is written in the small print but the person at the service desk didn't know it and it had to be pointed out... but he honoured it. The reviews here mean I would be careful before renting from Payless at other locations but I wouldn't hesitate to rent from them in Denver.

I don't know why people complain when they are offered upgrades. If you don't want a bigger nicer car then just say No.

We had similar experience with the counter clerk flogging their CDW insurance. When we declined the CRW insurance, she asked us to produce evidence of our primary car insurance at home. Hello... who carries their car insurance with them when they are traveling? Well, I did not. Then she launched into a scare tactic saying if we got stopped by the police and cannot produce evidence of primary insurance, the car will be impounded immediately and it will cost lots of money to get it released. At not point, she pointed it out that it is optional. When I questioned her about it, she just stated that it is all on the booking website.... it is pure BULL.
In short, we bought into her scare tactic and our rental cost went from $71 to $206.
When I wrote their customer service to file a complain, they said nothing about the way that the insurance was sold to me but only pointed out that I have signed and agreed to buy the optional insurance.
I have rented from many company and this has never happened to me before. I have a feeling that the workers were paid incentive to hog their optional insurance. I will NEVER rent from Payless again even if it is free.
