“Overall experience- Payless Kerry Airport Ireland”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 04/01/2024

The customer service at Kerry airport was terrible. The car hire cost was £256 pre-paid. When picking car up I was asked to pay an additional 500 Euros for insurance and fuel. This is a complete rip off - so I asked for the hire to be cancelled and the pre-paid amount to be refunded. They said I would need to take this up with Avis/ Budget despite all documentation being on Payless headed paper. They didn’t like any questions being asked and were very vague about the insurance cover - lots of ambiguity and no set / displayed transparent tariffs. Payless are exploiting their position and local staff clearly gain from extortionate additional charging probably on commission basis. Avoid using this company.

“Absolutely irresponsible .... never use!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by KWJ1960 on 17/07/2019

This is a ZERO STAR review. Had a confirmed reservation in hand. Showed up at the Payless Car Rental counter at the Memphis Airport on July 16, 2019. There were no agents. The agents from another rental agency informed me all Payless agents went home (left work) at around 4:00 pm. My reservation was for 6:00 pm. Their reason for leaving? NO CARS!! So what! Stay and tell incoming customers you have no cars but have worked out getting a car with “this” agency. Nope! They abandon their customers and don’t even try to help. Called the toll-free number to see what they would do, and they DID NOTHING to help. The agent said, “Maybe we can offer you a discount on a future rental!” Why would I rent a car with them again when there are no cars to rent! They offer NO customer service. In more than 30 years of travel I’ve never had anything like this happen. Unbelievable. DON’T go near this company. You’ve Been warned.

“Awful experience in Tirobto”

★☆☆☆☆

written by KarlaOwen on 08/05/2018

We were given a car which reeked of stale cigarette smoke, even though we were told that smoking and pets were prohibited. There was a used toothpaste tube under the front passenger seat, and the interior was not particularly clean either. Overall, a horrible experience!

“Worst car rental ever”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Samanthax62 on 23/03/2016

Never renting from them again. Book a car on Hotwire from Jfk location. The car I was given was very dirty and it smells a lot like cigarette couldn't drive this car with the window closed during winter time in New York City. Rented this car for 3 days had to return it the next day. Call customer services had to file a complaint with the create a ticket didn't receive a respond until 5 days later... But even worse is that they charge $27 for fuel even though i returned the vehicle with the tank full. Who in their right mind would be driving a vehicle in New York City with an enty fuel tank in order to return it entry. This company does not care for their costumes. Which there was a minus star to give it to them stay away at the end you don't Payless you will pay more for a bad product.

“Horrible Payless Customer Service In Atlanta”

★☆☆☆☆

written by PaylessGetless on 27/09/2015

I took a pre-paid rental for a Full Size car for a week in Atlanta on September 18, 2015. They did not have a full size car available even though I had already paid in advance for the full size car for the week, Payless gave me a choice of waiting another two hours at the airport to see if a full size car would come available or I could upgrade to a "premium' car for a fee. I didn't want to wait so I stupidly accepted the fee for the upgrade. IT MORE THAN DOUBLED THE COST OF MY RENTAL AND IT WAS THEIR FAULT THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE CAR I ALREADY PAID FOR. Five days into the rental, the 'check engine' light and the 'slip indicator warning' lights came on. I got the car back to where I was staying and called the Atlanta office immediately to get assistance. I called three times between 8PM and 9PM and let the phone ring at least five minutes each time - no answer. I called the 800 number and I was told that I needed to drive the car the 45 miles back to Atlanta Airport since they weren't answering the phone during their posted business hours. When I said that I wasn't comfortable driving a car with serious malfunction indicators showing for 45 miles on strange dark country roads, I was told by the 800 operator that it was my fault for not properly checking the car five days earlier when I took the rental off their property and that any towing charges to get the car back if it broke down was my responsibility. I left the car parked on the sixth and final day of our vacation and stayed at the place where I was renting. On the last day, I drove the car back to Atlanta Airport with both warning lights showing. When I returned the car to the location and explained my dissatisfaction with the fact that they weren't answering the telephone when I needed help, I was told the location manager was not in yet but that she would call me that day to discuss the problems I had. I never got that call at all. Apparently, Payless does not honor the contract when you reserve a specific type car and charges you more than double the promised rate to get you out of the airport, but when you take the car, you are responsible if it breaks down after you leave the lot. Unless you are looking for adventure on your trip, NEVER, NEVER Payless. Your pay more and get less in the end.

“WORST CAR RENTAL AGENCY EVER”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ZBILWANI on 26/09/2015

I waited 40 minutes to be picked up on the terminal then waited 1:30 minutes in the line (After 20 hours journey and with my pregnant wife) THE STAFF IS EXTREMELY RUDE, INCOMPETENT, ARGUMENTATIVE, CONDESCENDING AND HAVE TERRIBLE ATTITUDE in particular the person I dealt with who is the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS IN MY LIFE. Their service is absolutely PATHETIC, They FORCED me to take their INSURANCE even though my credit card company confirmed that I am covered and I can refuse the car rental insurance. the person I dealt with refused to rent me the car if I don't take THEIR insurance, he said I will be driving illegally if I don't take their insurance. I paid for the LUXURY CAR option and I was given a BASIC model of Nissan ALTIMA with scratches all over the car. If I had an easy choice I would have paid more money but rented from somewhere else. DO NO GO FOR THE LOW PRICE.  THE EMPLOYEES ARE VULTURES.

“DON't USE THIS COMPANY!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by OrrieM on 01/08/2015

In Albuquerque I booked a car from Payless for $41 a day for two days. The estimated total online was about $90 with taxes. When I got to the airport, I changed my rental to one day at $41. But the next morning I called to extend it one day and received a message saying they would call back in 15 minutes. They did not call back, when I called again I got the same recording. Naturally, I assumed the second day would also be $41, since that was the advertised amount for the car, and that was the amount calculated when I wanted it for two days. However, when I returned it six hours after the deadline, they charged me $82 for the second day alone. With all the hidden fees and so forth the amount was far greater than what I had budgeted. I have to say the young man who waited was courteous, and even admitted that it was "unusual". I hope he finds a job with a better company. I was told to call their 800 number for customer service and I told my story to an agent. I received an email that said the amount was on the contract and they did not refund it. Now that I have read the other reviews, I realize I got off easy. Why, oh why, did I not read the reviews before?!

“The worst”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 21/04/2015

Booked a vehicle online and when I went there they never had the vehicle. I was forced to upgrade or have no vehicle at all. They charged me the extra money on my credit card. I have asked for a refund on just the extra money and they refused. They are the worst company I have ever dealt with. Customer services is terrible and they do not help at all. DO NOT RENT from them.

“Sign up prepaid deal then "NO Car" and got downgraded...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jacquesdegaulle on 06/02/2015

First time use Payless, prepaid them for a fairly nice online deal...but end with disaster. First, when pick up the car at our reservation time...there is no "full size" car. Then we got offered an Medium size car instead. Wife was complaining, Payless get less.... Drive back to Airport for exchange...yeah...Camry. But the freshener they chose is really horrible. ( Cheap...cheap...cheap smell. ) Well, there is a Jeep smells not that bad....Sorry, it gonna cost you $11 per day additional without Tax. I will Pay additional if the car is worthy, or if the service is worthy....NO...I don't feel so. The staff explains to us "Sir, Payless is a very small rental company, we don't have thousands cars like Hertz or Avis they have." Well, you have a station at SJC, you better have the similar service in order to compete for the market, right? We got some similar nice deal at Las Vegas all the time...I thought you offer the deal to attract "new customers" but not scare away "new customers." My wife and I, will vote NO...next time we see the deal offered by "Payless...."

“$350 per day for an economy class car?!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by AvahSharpe on 02/02/2015

Rented a Versa from their San Diego office - a black car in a very dark parking lot. Found a dent above a front tire the next morning. They charged me the rental fee of $70-something for 3 days, plus put a $250 charge on my credit card for my deductible. They never contacted me directly afterwards though they said they would the next week. Two months later they tell my insurance company that the repairs will be $1800; the car had many additional miles on it and the repairs specified shouldn't have been necessary for the damage involved. Yesterday I found that they'd charged another $750 to my credit card without my authorization, making my three days come to over $1,070. This kind of corporate behavior is inexcusable. They never provided proof, via previous check-in slips from previous rentals of the vehicle, to show that the damage occurred with me originally, nor did they provide my claims dept. with a legible picture of the damage (I had to do that). Their failure to deal with me directly speaks a lot about their corporate practices. Choosing this company for supposedly low rates would be the height of foolishness

“Hacked Credit Card to bad no Refund for you!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jeff1177 on 26/10/2014

Prepaid online on July 13, 2014 for a car to be picked-up on Oct 1, 2014 and returned on Oct 4, 2014 for $86.85. Prior to picking up the car my VISA used to make the reservation was compromised; Visa cancelled the card and asks that I destroy it. Due to this I was unable to provide the same card at pick-up. Payless refused to honor this contract and stated they couldn't cancel or give me credit, I would have to call Corporate, which I did, but they said due to I didn't have the same credit card they would not refund the money. However they would rent me a car for almost 3 times the cost. I had my government ID plus a passport card and 3 other valid credit cards, but they would not honor the contract, and the email from Payless confirming my reservations. After dealing with them for 2 weeks they said they would give me an in house credit for a car if I made a reservation within 45 days. Why didn't they do this on Oct 1st, this is all I wanted in the first place. Now that our trip has past we don't need another car and an in house credit. Their answer is that it's clear of their terms, and doesn't matter the circumstances involving me. If you don't have the same credit card used to make the reservation, you don't get the car and you don't get a refund. I want a refund for my $86.85 I paid in advance for a car that Payless refused to rent me or credit me at the time. This was a situation beyond my control, I couldn’t help that my credit card had been hacked. However I was able to provide more than adequate ID to prove who I was, including the email from payless of the reservations. This happens often in today’s world as we have seen with the latest hacks on Target, Home Depot and Chase bank. Payless needs to have provision in their polices to protect their customers from being scammed by payless as well.

“Confirmed reservation but no car”

★☆☆☆☆

written by fieldsmc on 26/08/2014

Warning!!! Do not use the following for a rental car reservation: Payless Car Rental, Montreal Airport (457 Michel Jamin Road) Airport RentalCars.com (the online agent) FlexRez (the aprent company of AirportRentalCars.com I believe) On Friday evening August 8 I arrived in Montreal at the proper time with a confirmed Payless Car rental reservation. Both Payless and FlexRez confirmed the reservation during ensuing discussions. Why were there ensuing discussions? Because there was no car. Payless had rented all its cars and, shrug your shoulders, tough luck for me. Neither Payless nor FlexRez did anything at all to take care of their problem, which of course was now my problem. Despite numerous phone calls and emails. There were no rental cars to be had at the airport, nor in Montreal proper. I eventually was able to secure a car from Discount in a town near Montreal on Saturday afternoon - no thanks at all to Payless or FlexRez. My issues with Payless and FlexRez? 1. No car when there was a confirmed reservation. 2. No help to find another car. 3. No warning prior to my arriving in Montreal on Friday evening that there would be no car available, despite the confirmed reservation. My suggestion if you want to make a car rental reservation in Montreal? Use anybody except Payless, AirportRentalCars.com or FlexRez.

“Bad Experience”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Cruz337 on 12/08/2014

Rented a car at Denver Airport. We had to wait about 30 minutes to get to customer service to get a car (there were ONLY two customer service reps). First car was ok, got down the road..warning message that car door is ajar. Took this car back, next car was an upgrade (SUV), the doors would not lock...took this car back, the third car was ok it ran. All of the cars we got were not cleaned. The inside was not cleaned. They only ran the car through a car was. The last car smelled of smoke or mold. I had to buy an air freshener. All of the cars are very high millage, you can guess why they call it Payless. We will never use this vender again. The building was very small to fit the customers in. One man yeld to the customer service reps to get more help out here. The reply from the customer service rep was "we don't need help and when we feel we need it we will get more people out here".

“Worst rental experience ever!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Carliev49 on 30/06/2014

I rented a car from Payless/Dooley in Dublin on 26-28 June online, since they offered automatic transmissions and what I thought was a good price. We got to the airport and waited 40 minutes for the shuttle. They had one man not only running the shuttle, but also getting all the passengers' paperwork and cars for them. We formed our own line to unload bags. The man who processed my paperwork informed me they were putting a $3,000 hold on my credit card for insurance, although I had a letter from my credit card agency with an insurance waiver. When I got my bank statement, they had put a $4,000 hold on it. The car itself was ok, but when we returned it, I was admonished for not paying an electronic toll online. Since it was late, they charged me $15. Not saying they are required to pay my tolls, but a little advance notice, plus a loss of the admonitory tone would have been appreciated. Very unimpressive customer service...and I use the term "service" very loosely. The cost was not less. Overall, very bad experience and one that O hope others can avoid.

“Payless can be better BUT YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR”

★★★★☆

written by Danika1990 on 04/06/2014

Tried payless for the first time because their prices were the lowest. Aside from Customer service being slow - they offer a bare bones car rental service. Make sure you have your third party liability insurance card as well as collision damage waiver from your credit card co. and you can avoid any additional charges. Make sure you inspect your car for all prior damage and report it prior to renting to avoid any future charges. Remember being the cheapest usually comes with less service so don't complain as the staff are probably paid a low wage.

“PAYMORE ... WAY MORE”

★☆☆☆☆

written by klSchmidt1 on 02/05/2014

STAY AWAY! STAY AWAY! STAY AWAY! 1) They are not cheap. Charges on top of your rental rate (not including insurance) will be >50% of the rental rate! ... Airport based rental companies are 30% more. It makes Payless' cost the same or higher! 2) Bait and switch .... was supposed to be unlimited KM, told only 200 when I got there. 3) Bait and switch more. Was told it would be $38/day including taxes on the phone. Was $47 when I got there. 4) FRAUDULENT DAMAGE CLAIM. I was shown the car at night, wet, in a very dark lot. A car that supposedly was new and in perfect shape ... they rushed me through it. Did my best to indicate scratches. I was never given a copy of my damage report. Brought the car back, and magically, they instantly find a "new" scratch. Yes a scratch. $500 later (will get that back through Visa) .... so much for Pay "Less". As I am sitting there, there is a stack of these damage claims. I have rented approximately 200 cars in my life, never gotten a damage claim once till now!! How many others did they defraud? Oh, that damage claim magically says No Tax on the receipt. I wonder what Revenue Canada will think of that? On other person was there when I was, a young female student. They were extorting $750 out of here for an alleged new "scratch" on the windshield. UNREAL!
