There's a lot to dislike about Payless at SFO. I can't imagine ever using them again, cheapest vendor or not. To start with at SFO their agency is about a 15 minute bus ride away from the airport, adding about 30 minutes to the time to get your vehicle. That's something I could live with. What was completely unacceptable was their method of pushing add-ons. The car rental industry is generally awful with their pushing junk insurance, tank refills and similar. Quote of $268 went to $710 at pick-up. Must purchase their insurance, $250 deposit. Car upgraded, smelled moldy after spray wore off. Unable to get deposit back, returned with full gas, cleaner than before, no wrecks, mileage within range and on time. Customer service agreed, but no $. 1. They did not charge us the rate as it was confirmed by Priceline. 2. Then Payless charged us $8.95 a day in addition for third party liability insurance. They said it was mandatory to be insured for $2 million and that our insurance only covers up to 1 million (we had car insurance statement the the insurance card with us). After booking my rental car from Orlando Airport, I am called the location directly and asked what the total needed on my credit card would be . I was told $350 would be all I need. We booked our car & flights through Cheapo Air. They assured us that PayLess Car Rental was at the Airport and they knew what time our flights were to arrive at Trudeau International in Montreal. Our flights were 15 min. late arriving. By the time we got through customs and collected our baggage it was 6:15 PM. Payless Rental should be named Paymore Rental. I was quoted $271.28 for a Grand Cherokee on rentalcars.com and I booked it. When I arrived at Payless outside of the Orlando International Airport, they didn't have the vehicle I booked and they tried to give me a Hyundai SUV. I am very disappointed with the rental car I got. I reserved a Compact car online (Honda Civic or Similar), but was given a Toyota Yaris 4 door (Subcompact - Toyota Yaris or similar). I rented from a Toronto dealer. The car had 100,000 miles on it. It smelled of cigar smoke, had many scratches on it and the back tires were badly worn. In fact one tire had a 3 inch cut and was worn down to the treads. I had to spend 2 hours to get the tire repaired. Unfortunately I missed seeing a tiny stone chip in the windshield and now they are saying that I did it and are forcing me to pay for it. I had been warned they were a rip off merchant, and this was right. Prior to booking this rental, I had conducted price comparisons through a number of sources, including my usual sources of rentals – Hertz. I booked with Pay Less as the costs were considerably cheaper. Listen closely, I rented from Payless a few months ago and had a terrible experience from waiting at the airport pick-up location for close to 1 hour then too many people waiting to get cars and car was definitely dirty. I made the awful mistake recently of renting a second time (they literally thanked me) when I booked and explained to agent that I needed the 407. I used it for a one way trip and got billed 84.90 for this trip. They apparently didn't explain the 50.00 dollar SERVICE... (read more)

Be carefull with this company, and actually I would advise to not rent from them (Payless or U Save), espcially if ever in Costa Rica. First, they were an hour late picking me up from the airport, then I had to wait another hour while another couple in front of me had problem after problem with their car. Steer clear of Payless Greece. It's not really part of Payless Car Rental, or so they told me. But the e-mail address is sales@payless.gr and there is a website for Payless Greece. I booked my car via Expedia.com. The contract with Expedia stated that the rental car was with unlimited mileage. Nobody on the Toronto office told me that I had limited mileage. They charged me more than $250 for 3 days rental and they argued that unlimited mileage is only valid if you don´t leave Ontario region! In addition to that, the rental office is outside the airport, the staff is extremely rude and a Toyota Corolla is considered a midsize car... Payless NEVER AGAIN! (read more)

Payless Car Rental is crucked, they tried to trick me sign off on services I did not want or need. The Agent at Phoenix Airport printed 2 contracts the first contract was set up to add additional charges I have not requested. The second contract had than a $50 charge for a service for trafic tickets.
Was standing in front of the service desk for 30 minutes and was not able to get a car as requested.
Finally I canceled with them and rented a car with another company.

They were okay for the money. The car was clean and had a reasonable amount of miles. Considering the price I paid it was not too bad a deal. They did add an extra charge for RSA (I learned this is Road Side Assistance) which I did not request. Fortunately the site I booked through (carhiresavers.com) managed to get it refunded. I would recommend them as a low cost provider but make sure you check your bill. (read more)

Booked a Car Rental through Expedia for a Toronto arrival. Payless offered favorable rates compared to Hertz and Avis. Failed to advise that they are located offsite and you must go to an outisde location at Viacount at the Toronto airport to catch a shuttle to their location. I wish I would have read these reviews before selecting this company in Arizona for July long weekend 2010.
I have never in my life seen such horrible, disorganized customer service!
We rented a vechicle in Phoenix (which the low end car had 55, 000 miles on it already) We drove it to Palm Springs where it broke down there, we tried everything that we could (as we are not mechanics at all) to get this car started....

It makes no sense to reserve a vehicle with Payless Auto Rental because THEY GIVE YOUR VEHICLE TO ANYBODY ELSE ANYWAY!
I made my reservation two weeks in advance only to find out when i got there that my car had been given out already and they had no more vehicles! On top of that they rudely argued with me about the time i had given them! It was all in the emails!

I was also quoted the lowest price when I made the reservation but when the paper work was presented to be signed, it was more than 3 times the amount I was originally quoted. They use various webpages clearly stating that there is no mileage restriction. However, a mileage restriction is in the contract. The clerk does not indicate this when you take the car and you get hit on your return. Even if you notice it, it is difficult to get a car from an alternative provider when you are in another city.
Add rude behavior to it and you got an ugly mixture!

The only problem we had was that the guy got crabby with me for declining the insurance, gas package, and car upgrade and actually asked me if I had a word other than "no" in my vocabulary which I thought was kind of rude. Bus arrived quickly at the airport, service was quick, we got a new car that worked perfectly. I bid for a low price on Priceline and then declined CDW and insurance because I had both extended on my home car insurance. Rented a car over the weekend, and $250 was charged on my credit card as a deposit. One week after returning the car, my deposit is yet to be returned to my credit card. The first time I called them, they blamed my credit card company by saying maybe my credit card takes a while to credit the return. I went to vegas over holidays.
The cheap car rental company I choose online called "payless" deny the orginal contract for $160 per week saying that it's only for inside Nevada, and charge for $250 instead. A 40% mark up.
And the car I get is a poor kia even without "L" and "L2" on transmission.
I usually rent cars from big chains for business, no problem at all. Next time I'd rather pay more for the big chain instead of the local ones.

Payless Orlando - what a horrible company. I waited 45 minutes in the hot Florida sun for the pickup van while we watched vans from other car rental companies make two or three trips during that same time. When it finally arrived the driver was borderline rude. Then when we got to the office he was counting his money like he expected a tip. Hey, I got a tip for 'ya, don't keep your customers waiting for 45 mins.

<br>Once we got there the people at the counter were too busy talking to each other to wait on me. After they finally decided to acknowledge my existance I got the "hard sell" on some goofy "loss of use" insurance. This is some new dodge where they actually expect you to pay for days their vehicle is out of service if it has an accident. I think this is what the insurance company pays for bucko.

<br>What a bunch of losers. Place could use a good cleaning too, they must not care how their office looks.

We had similar experience with the counter clerk flogging their CDW insurance. When we declined the CRW insurance, she asked us to produce evidence of our primary car insurance at home. Hello... who carries their car insurance with them when they are traveling? Well, I did not. Then she launched into a scare tactic saying if we got stopped by the police and cannot produce evidence of primary insurance, the car will be impounded immediately and it will cost lots of money to get it released. At not point, she pointed it out that it is optional. When I questioned her about it, she just stated that it is all on the booking website.... it is pure BULL.
<br/>In short, we bought into her scare tactic and our rental cost went from $71 to $206.
<br/>When I wrote their customer service to file a complain, they said nothing about the way that the insurance was sold to me but only pointed out that I have signed and agreed to buy the optional insurance.
<br/>I have rented from many company and this has never happened to me before. I have a feeling that the workers were paid incentive to hog their optional insurance. I will NEVER rent from Payless again even if it is free.
