I got a telephone call from an MBNA representative shortly after I had made a huge payment of £1200 to my credit card account (to cover a hire car deposit on holiday)to state that he was reducing my credit limit by that exact amount! He effectively seized my money!

MBNA are just waiting for suckers. You start of with nice low rates, bombard you with texts and calls offering 0% balance transfers to your current account, then they increase your limits without you asking and then bang, you get your limit slashed and your rate hiked to 34.9% No reason, I have excellent credit history going back 22 years, very good rating, no defaults, no missed payments.

Similar story to many below. I got the MBNA Platinum Plus Card on a 0% balance transfer. Got up to £5000 on it and they whacked the interest up to 34.9%. When I rang them and asked why they told me I was risky - I've never missed a payment. They kindly agreed reduce my interest to 30.9% but that was the best they could do!!!

Fortunately I was in a position that I could transfer the debt elsewhere but pity those who have been trapped.

Rip off. MBNA Platinum Plus Card give a young poor student a 2900.00 limit, let them max it in a month, then let them go 50.00 over the limit and when the person finally gets below the limit they tell them to take a "payment holiday". Right now my daughter pays 100.00 a month to her almost maxed credit card and 80.00 goes to interest and finance charges and 20.00 to her credit balance. Thankfully she allowed us to cut the card up, isn't using it anymore, and has started ignoring the payment h ...

Firstly I have to admit I got sucked into believing MBNA thanks to their strong marketing and very little knowledge on my part. For 5 years now I have struggled with a Virgin/MBNA card and in the last 14 months the apr has gone up 3 times, to a whapping 31%. The reason? Well last year and the year before I had 3 late payments which I then sorted. So they deemed my account as "risky" and hiked the charges. Since Jan 08 my scoring has vastly improved and asked several times to reconsider the charg ...

I have a 754 FICO score, an AmEx Gold card and no mortgage (own my house outright).MBNA Platinum Plus Card arbitrarily raised my interest rate and lowered my limit causing me to have a credit refusal for a business dinner. When I called I was referred to a manager who was extremely terse and rude. When I complained about his attitude, nicely, mind you, he began insulting me. He then summarily closed my account. When I asked him why he was closing my account, he stated that he didn't feel that ...

had a letter advising my card was stopped (the previous day) due to a potential fraud. I rang but could get no details of how my card details had been "possibly" intercepted by a third party. I decided to pay off my full balance ( £2k) and rang the help team. An agent said she could only take the minimum payment from me. The reason she gave was because my card had been stopped she could not take the full amount. I reminded her that they had stopped the card through no fault of mine. I even ...

I have just been informed that my interest rate has been increased overnight from 22.9% to 34.9% - an increase of over 50%! When I called the Customer Services department the person I spoke to said it was a 'business decision' but could tell me no more than that. I was told that a letter has been sent to me informing me about this increase but I have never received it and so have asked for a copy. I suppose this letter might tell me why my rate has been increased but I cannot believe that any re ...

Excellent card. Initial limit of £8200 despite not much credit history (although all good history I may add). I do regularly make large payments and then spend again and pay off again but after 6 months I asked if they would increase to 9k so I could transfer other balances at 0%. They gave me a £10k limit over the phone in 2 minutes.
Their call centres are fast, friendly and always deal with the enquiry to complete satisfaction. Give them some credit they are fantastic!

I have had an MBNA credit card for about six years. I have never missed a payment. About three months ago a payment was missed due to an error by MBNA and I incurred charges. When I queried this they agreed to refund the charges as it was not my fault. However, they then proceeded to hike my interest rate from 6.9% to 25.9%! Then to add salt to the wound I have just received notification this is now going up to 34.9%! When I queried this they were most unhelpful. Tesco seem to be the best!

I missed a payment by one day, I was charged £20.00 late payment fee plus my interest rate went from 0% to 22%. When I spoke to customer service they were not very sympathetic with me missing a payment date despite me being a customer of 10 years.
So its now time to leave MBNA and join a more ethical card issuer.

I applied for MBNA platinum credit card and was rejected by them although my credit history is quite good and have never defaulted on a payment. They said we can't offer you a reward credit card but a normal credit card but you have to send a 100 pounds check and which will be credited to your account once you start your shopping. This is ridiculous.

I have had one of these cards for a number of years, with an interest rate of 6.9%. They recently upped the rate to 12.9%, then this week again upped it to 21.9%.I have never missed a payment or spent even half of my £5k limit. If you do get one of these cards, be prepared to switch quickly if they do the same to you.

This card is MBNA/HSBC Direct Merchants. I fought and argued to no avail. Now I have to wait and see if it hurts my credit at all. There are many places on the web that say keep your oldest cards and that canceling them will drop your score even though nothing was wrong with the account. I guess I'll find out soon.

MBNA used to be an excellent credit card provider but sadly that is changing. I am in the process of closing all my accounts with them and moving to an ethical credit card company. Nobody in this world expects something for nothing but sadly it appears MBNA are no longer interested in customer service but squeezing customers for everything they can get.
    Good luck!

I do not blame mbna in a way, because postal service we receive here is pathetic, I received my statement for another credit card which was posted in November received in January. Postal service should be answerable, why it took them so long to deliver a letter, over 2 moths delay. Pathetic service good thing I pay by direct debit. Clever thinking otherwise I would have messed my credit report, plus, late payment, higher interest rates, and ruined credit worthiness.

I had a MBNA Conran Credit card which promised cashback (see countless websites if you do a search on Google). The credit card was closed down all of a sudden and, to cut a long story short, I have missed out of receiving cashback on the card that I used for months. I have literally wasted hours trying to get the cashback, but MBNA have come up with every excuse in the book, going so far as to explain on seven separate occasions that the Conran card never offered cashback in the first place. I t ...

I don't have the problem that a lot of people on these forums have! I love my
MBNA Premier Rewards Platinum Plus card. I have been with mbna a little over two years and despite my past credit issues they increased my limit from 500 to 3000. I have been 30 days late first time and MBNA never increased my interest rate, in fact when I was late I had a call from mbna from a really kind gentlemen who seemed genuinely concerned about my situation and worked with me to get my account up to date an ...

I signed up for an MBNA Credit Card on campus in order to get a free T shirt. I got the shirt, and soon after the card arrived, several "convenience checks" started arriving. The problem is that anyone could snatch these checks out of my mailbox and go draining my CC account.
I of course called MBNA and told them to stop sending them to me. The representative was unfriendly. They removed my name from that list, and I received more checks, even 60 days after my request to cancel (there is a '60 ...
