“Just hiked by 50% to £450 UKP - they broke it.”

Written on: 28/04/2013 by MrHeavens (1 review written)

The travel insurance for ALL family and airport lounge access was useful, but borderline value at the old £300 fee. Then they went and broke it by asking for £450 and offering worse insurance and some (to me) useless and pointless additional 'benefits'. I am not paying MORE for a charge card than I do for a £40k car insurance!!! If you fly every month in economy and stay in a lot of US chain hotels it works - otherwise its poor value. Bye Amex after 15 years. (read more)

“Deceptive Practices - DO NOT USE Amex Platinum Travel”

Written on: 16/02/2013 by LilPK

Their travel services are atrocious and I would NEVER recommend them unless you want to be purposely deceived by Amex. I had previously purchased a cruise online through their travel services that confirmed all my Platinum cruise benefits in writing, guess they couldn't renege on that. Having had a great time on the cruise and an overall good experience with Amex's Platinum online travel booking, I decided to book another cruise but had to speak to a cruise representative (Herminio... “HORRIBLE PLATINUM CARD SERVICE”

Written on: 15/01/2013 by mrsimsinla04 (1 review written)

After American Express basically BEGGED me to apply for a Platinum card, I did so over a month ago. I applied online and received a notice that the card was going to be expedited in 2-3 days which was perfect as I wanted to use it for travel and airport lounge privileges over the holidays, having 3 trips planned. After a week and not receiving the card, and unable to use it on first trip, I called and found that AE had mailed the card to an entirely wrong address. The person (whom I could... (read more)

“Platinum card is good value”

Written on: 25/12/2011 by Kenvanheerden (1 review written)

The platinum card offers good rewards, and benefits for travel customers. The service at one point in time was very poor and laid back on behalf of the Amex team. But since that hic-up, their service has improved ten fold. I find if you pay back monthly on a one off purchase, till the payment is complete, then you are building a good history with the Amex family. I have 3 Amex cards at the moment for different purposes, and life styles, eventually I will only use Amex, the rest will be... (read more)

Written on: 11/05/2011

The new fraud protection system makes this card unreliable when traveling abroad. Was recently abroad when a fraud alert was triggered, and was not able to release the hold on the card until returning to a local number at which the fraud protection unit could contact me directly. Platinum Card Service personnel were very sympathetic, but there was simply nothing that they could do, acknowledging that the new procedures appeared to limit the value of the card when traveling. The basic benefits of the AMEX Platinum card are good - family travel insurance, supplementary cards for six people (who also get travel benefits), priority pass at airports etc, but the whole experience is let down by the awful customer service, and constant stream of errors and mishaps made whenever I have been in touch with them.

They soon apologise and credit your account with £25 as goodwill gesture, but the mistake keep happening, and the time wasting hassles of having to call them up... (read more)

This is the best card I have had in my wallet in all the years of using Credit Cards and Charge Cards. I use the Americian Express Service in London for this card and I can recommend the service. I have other cards with American Express with other currencies and I must confess the customer service in order locations can be poor.

I have received constantly appalling service! It took months & many complaints before my supplemenatary card holder received their card. I am now fighting to get our airport VIP lounge passes. Though Amex admit they received our successful applications 2 months ago, they've still not come! Amex say they may take a further 28 days - making a total period of over 3 months without this facility (losing a quarter of the period I have paid for!). Have been a member for just over 2 years now with the platinum charge card. Must say it's a big waste of money.

The travel service is rubbish. Deals are much cheaper online. The concierge wasn't much help either.

Priority Pass gets you access to some fairly sub-standard lounges. The only useful thing is the insurance.

I appreciate that there is some degree of kudos in carrying this card but simply not worth it. I recently had 2 months of what i would consider to be high expenditure,... (read more)

I have been an American express platinum card holder for over 20 years and was recently stranded because of the Volcanic ash. I contacted Amex and asked them how much I could charge to my card and they told me a one off £300. One word about the AMEX PLATINUM CHARGE CARD .... excellent.
Moved over from a Platinum Cashback Card after a year of use (when the moneyback offered dropped down). Decided to take the plunge and applied for the Platinum Charge Card and was accepted for the Platinum Charge Card (£300 annual fee).
Since I always paid off my monthly balance the charge card HAS to be paid off each month no matter what the spend. Only thing I would say about the 'no spending limit', there is one. Amex need to... (read more)

This is the best "charge" card on the market. Depending on the country you live in, the service levels will vary a lot. But AMEX is the only true card for anyone who travels extensively overseas. The amount of protection and service that you can get while travelling, by far outweighs the annual cost of the card. In addition, you have so many perks, which if you add up, far outweigh the cost of the card.

I have an HSBC Platinum Amex card. Supposedly, this qualifies one for airport lounge access when travelling on certain airlines. But as the New Zealand issued HSBC Platinum Amex card has a 'silver fern' motif on its face, the airlines refuse to honour it. Nobody in Amex is willing or able to resolve this anomaly. And there are many other issues which are equally difficult to comprehend given that we are supposedly elite customers. (read more)

Have been an American Express cardholder since 1988. Started with a gold card and have been a platinum cardholder for at least 10 years. I have just had my notification come through that on my November statement it will show my £300 annual fee. Sorry to say, but I have today cancelled my membership after 20 years. I have the CitiBank Amex Select card for my miles and that offsets the rough deal you get with the Companion tickets. The RewardsFirst program is pretty cool and the Starwood complimentary enrolment is worth it as well. The only complaint is that you have to shell out 9000 to fly to Europe for business class or 14000 for first class(my prices are from my airline of choice: Air France) Overall a fantastic card with a bit of a steep price. I have this card and I can only disagree. American Express as a company is the best. The Platinum card is well worth the annual fee. It has a long list of benefits and whenever I have had an issue, AMEX was more the helpful. I have 2, Platinum and Platinum for business. This is the card if you qualify.

If you use your points to pay for the annual fee, it takes 90,000 points per year (20,000 points = $100).

If, instead, you get the AMEX Blue Cash Back ... use that as your primary card, I should get the $450 back with spending $35-40k per year and still get the perks of the Platinum. It seems like such a waste for me to have two accounts when one will do ... just to get a better cost basis. (read more)

Unbeatable travel services with my American Express Platinum. Breaks down my annual expenses by category, which makes for easy accounting. Free companion First Class/Business ticket when purchased on the card. There are a ton of benefits, but I'll caveat that you need to make enough money to afford the benefits. We have had the platinum cards for a month now. Until now, everything went wrong. We got this card on "invitation", but when we wanted to pay with it - it was not authorised. This card in my opinion needs more exclusivity when it comes to extras. My Visa Signature has the same discounts as this card and is excepted in more places than the Amex Platinum. Why would you want to have a Platinum CREDIT card. You can get a much better rate from other companies. The benefits also are far better on the Platinum CHARGE card. The truth is that AmEx doesn't like offering credit card facilities so cancel your credit card, apply for the charge card, and get a low rate credit card elsewhere.

I remember that my first car was Visa Gold (charge) and I had cca 6.000 $ limit, after intensive spendings they doubled the limit and finally my personal banker asked me how much I want to have it when I travel.......I go on vacation in 3 weeks and I asked for 50K $ limit on all cards, and it was approved....

My social security number was entered with a digit incorrect. When I would call customer service they said it was correct - but when I was late on my payment - the collection center said the account didn't belong to me.

I applied for the American Express Platinum Credit Card in my name & with my social security number - but they went so far as to accuse me of giving them someone else's social security number.

In the end they sent me a generic letter stating that I applied for the card - but that it wasn't a extension of credit.

If you apply online print out the confirmation pages - to prove if necessary. It can happen to anyone.
