I took out online insurance with Halifax car insurance and after accepting online I phoned them for advice as I was soon to emigrate. I asked primarily about refunds for early cancellation. I stated I did not want the auto renewal as would be moving abroad and I was told that they had updated my account to this effect. I was told the paperwork was in the post. “Do not be misled by the familiar Halifax brand”

Halifax Car Insurance falls a long way short of the service you expect from a Halifax company. Our problem should have been sorted in minutes by good customer sevices, but the driving force of this company is neither customer service nor customer satisfaction. Instead I experienced a determined pursuit of fees, underpinned by warnings of cancellation of the policy and they mean it. “Buyer Beware!!!”

I took out my policy with Halifax after using a comparison site as many people do to try and save a bit of money. After 3 days of being insured with them I recieved a letter informing me that the underwriters (A company I had held insurance with before with no problems) had refused to cover me at the price and T&C's Halifax had offered. I wanted to change from a group 41 car to a group 17 car but they would not insure it. Was told I would have to cancel policy and take out a new one through Halifax for £300 when I could get it for £210. They said if I cancelled and insured elsewhere I would have to pay a £55 charge. “Thank Goodness I never had to make a claim”

I tried to cancel after they quoted me so much more to change my details (I bought another car). They just ignored me and kept sending me renewal notices. After reading the other reviews my only consolation is I never had an accident. One star is 2 stars too many. (read more)

“Do not think as you know the name these are good - RUBBISH”

I bought insurance through these thinking they must be ok as they are well known, how wrong could I be. My wife was hit by a driver who provided false details although she had photo evidence, these took the details and said they would be in touch - passed details to an injury lawyer who badgered us constantly although we didn't want to claim. I currently pay 78 pound a month for my car insurance, I thought I would try and save some money and get a new car with a lower insurance group, my car is a group 5 so when I found a nice little 51 reg ka which was a group 3 I thought I would save some money, I called to ask about changing my car on my policy and they said they wanted 300 pound upfront and then 175 pound per month for 11 months, I have never been so shocked in my life, they want me to pay more than double of what I pay now... To cut a long story short. Halifax would like an extra £345 to change vehicle 6 months into fully paid annual comprehensive insurance. Original Car Mercedes Benz ML £421 Per Year New Car Mercedes Benz Viano £532 Per Year..I will get back £187 from original £421 to transfer vehicle so extra £345 to pay., If i CANCEL policy altogether out of the £187 i will get back £23 after charges!!!!! Tried help my 75 year old dad deal with his claim. Other party admitted liability, yet he is still without a car 4 weeks later, Halifax hand details to a claims management company who give your details to Personal Injury Lawyers, a questionable car hire service, who are only interested in increasing the costs in the claim. Then insurers blame fraudulent customers for the rising claims. Appears the Fraud starts with the insurance company. (read more)

“AWFUL is the only word.”

I have been charged an asolute fortune by Halifax all to change over my insurace to another car. Another car which is the same make as my old one and only 6 months younger. They demanded £100 from me and upped my premiuim to a ridiculous amount. The customer service is shocking, I had 3 different people tell me 3 very different things and give me 3 different outrageous prices. It took weeks, months for a reply from the Halifax Car Insurance when trying to resolve my car insurance claim from the other driver’s car insurance company. After nearly 18 months I accepted a personal injury claim of £7500 from my initial £21,000 because I just wanted to put the whole thing behind me. Just received my renewal notice informing me that they will automatically renew as they have my details on computer I rang to say that I would not renew for this reason as I do not agree with the keeping this information .when I asked if my details would be removed when I was no longer a customer I was told that they had no way of deleting this information therefore my details will remain with them why should this be is this common practice and if so why..? Renewal received - £150 more expensive than current year. Telephoned and was given quote £200 less (?) - was a computer error. Before renewing requested new paperwork by email and by post. Did not arrive. Wrote in - once, twice, three times. Reply received was original quote. Logged complaint. Initial 4 week delay to give to an advisor. Again another 4 week delay to investigate. I had to give a star to continue. minus 5 more appropriate. Reported an accident on Subnday 10 june. after numerous phone calls to them passed on to Drive Assist all details again passed on. I insured with Halifax for a xmas present for my son. It took me over 2 months and constant phone calls to receive any documentation! I then decided to pay off the premium in full as the interest on the direct debit method was an expensive way to pay. I gave them my card details, yet they took it upon themselves to take it from my bank account leaving me with a bank charge. I telephoned again and was told to send in evidence of this! I have never had any problems with Halifax insurance even a claim was handle quickly and nothin was to muh trouble. Then they were taken over by BISL. All the new criteria in the policy is very one sided and very much in favour with the insurance company. They charge for everything! I mean everything. “The worst experience ever”

I have recently recieved a renewal from Halifax which was much more expensive than previous year. I rung their customer service and a rude lady actually thretened me that I will not get any cheaper anywhere else and that actually I should be thankful they want to insure my car (as I am not British she said that they don't accept EU driving licence and are going to count only 2 years from when I have exchanged my EU licence to British). “Very Poor Service”

I had difficulties with Halifax from the outset e.g. additional premium charges, conflicting confirmation of the no claims discount period. Getting a response from 'Customers Services' was exceptionally slow and the initial reply didn't make sense. Only after a complaint to Lloyds Bank Head Office did I get a partial refund of the overcharging. I made a further attempt to resolve matters approximately 2 months ago but am still awaiting a reply. My renewal with halifax was significantly more despite being a year older and having one more year of no claims. I found a much cheaper quote elsewhere and therefore cancelled my renewal and was charged £20.00 even though the date for renewal had not yet arrived. I feel this is unfair and would not take out my insurance with Halifax again on this basis alone. (read more)

Do notinsure your car with Halifax. I have been conned along with countless others when cancellling the policy before the end. Paid £ 608 for a year and tried to cancel when we sold the car with 3 months to go until policy expired. We were told that nothing would be refunded. If you read the small print in a 14 page document they send on e-mailit states that 100% of premium is payable if you cancel at 9 months. This is a disgrace and should not be allowed to happen. I wanted to buy a newer car, but the change to my policy was going to take it from the £700 I paid for the year and make it over £1000 with the new car. This wouldn't be so bad, but looking around I was quoted £500 - half the price. “Efficient, but need to improve on their customer service”

I had a car accident two years ago, of which I was at fault. I telephoned Halifax to make a claim and they dealt with it quickly and effectively. I agree with a previous review who advises they make you feel nervous by the amount of questions they ask and also by their legal disclaimers before you even make a claim! They put me on hold and then said they needed to transfer me and after ten minutes was back with the original department. Halifax Car Insurance has a license to print money!! They have a clause that any changes incur a £25.00 admin fee. But....just to change an address!! This is ridiculous!! This is in addition to the additional premium for changing areas. A total additional amount of £39.24 just because we are moving home!! I had been with the Halifax for 5 years, for last year the insurance came down to £290 with no-claims for life. Never had any troubles with them, was satisfied. Called today to cancel and was told it would cost £422.16 to cancel the policy today!!!
They were cheap last year but when the auto renewal came round the price had tripled. The renewal letter arrived in the middle of christmas so I never got round to dealing with it. I regret that now.
Also I was hit last year by a foreign driver, was told by Halifax that I was covered to be hit by foreign drivers. The car was only a banger anyway so I just dropped it. A few weeks later I got an angry... (read more)

My car was stolen a few months ago, settled excellent amount, . excellent customer service (but when you are making claim they make you feel quite nervous as they ask you a million questions over and over) Once that bit was over customer service fine. They took car of all recovery costs when car turned up 5 months later. Advised me where it was, good communication. Go with them, VERY HAPPY customer. But new renewal quote BIG PRICE HIKE. I have just returned from working overseas for 3 months. During that time I renewed my Insurance. When I returned the only Certificate of Motor Insurance was for 30 days cover. We returned to the UK on retirement. filled the forms ok but one letter was printed wrong on the certificate, we emailed the correct V5 to them 6 times and posted a copy of our V5 TWICE, in there addressed envelope provided!! They were good value for money when I took the insurance, recommended by websites and good customer service reviews.

I had an accident and they lived up to good expectations.

The only problem seems to be now it's time to renew, that good value has been increased by no less than 22%! BEWARE of the cost of policy cancellation!!!!
I have changed vehicle recently and bought a Japanese "Grey Import". Halifax Car Insurance will not insure these vehicles, so due to the fact I need my 10yrs NCB I called to cancel the policy and request proof of my NCB. £52 is what was aksed. I only have 2 more payments on this policy which would of cost about £45.
I cannot let the policy expire as I need the NCB.
This idea of hitting our pockets for pressing a button is HIGHWAY ROBBERY - suprise... (read more)

You would not have had a cancellation fee if you were canceling this policy mid-term if the reason was you were getting a grey import vehicle. If you were advised this then they were wrong. If you have paid a cancellation fee then i would acquire proof of sale for your old car to backdate cancellation to that date, explaining that you feel cancellation fee should be waived as you did not want to cancel the policy.

<br/>The Company you are dealing with are not a bank i don't think, they can justify their cancellation fees as the majority of companies do not make money off customers who do not renew for at least one year.

Accident in November (other drivers fault). Halifax didn't send paperwork to third party department for two months, took five months to request witness statement (fortunately witness hadn't moved away or died of old age in the meantime). Once statement received, did nothing with it for three months until prompted repeatedly be me. Now June... nothing sorted. Have had to renew with them as claim not settled. Don't waste your money. Get decent insurance even if it costs a little more elsewhere. (read more)

I have had two claims in the last 18 months (neither of them my fault, I might add), and the problems with both claims have been unbelievable. First Halifax car insurance tried to tell me I couldn't have a courtesy car, even though my comprehensive cover included this! Then when they did finally get me a car, they tried to say I had to pay extra for it!
