written by Nevaeh60 on 06/10/2015

No bogs in bar area out side room no dogs so dog frenzy is not no dogs to be left in room unattended so you can't eat on site just taka way so to pay for dogs a real joke £40 per dog for a room that was not clean To sum up not a bargain brake just a rip off hi/di/hi accommodation with no comedian nor entertainment

“Six adults and four children under 8, including one...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Nation on 01/09/2015

Six adults and four children under 8, including one toddler; all very excited; only holiday this year:- 1. Faults Not told chalets - told mobile homes (b) Pre-fabs - 1950's - outdated; old and tired (c) Mould and damp on walls; mould running up bed legs (d) Not been cleaned behind beds - dust had been there for months; mould; other people's bits and pieces (e) No shower in the bathroom; bath scratched and stained (f) No warning on hot tap; scalding water (H&S issue) (g) Put-you-up bed settee; very old and uncomfortable; when pulled out very little room and anyone in main bedroom would have to climb over the bed to get to the toilet. (h) Very small, very old TV - bracket on wall for TV but TV sat on sideboard. Filthy windows; outside windows covered with cobwebs and flies; not cleaned for weeks/months Kitchen grubby and old - no way could you cook a meal in there for 4 adults and children. 2. Swimming pools Cold (b) Dirty; people allowed to walk around pool with outside dirty shoes on; filthy; making water filthy (c) Baby pool closed due to filthy water. 3. Staff One said the pool was "always dirty". (b) Assistant manageress said "how can you clean windows when it's raining?" (c) Told several lies - ie; no manager available; not able to refund money; not able to upgrade (d) Not one staff member apologised for our inconvenience; one actually said it was a "silver" grade; if that was the case (which it was not), what on earth does a "bronze" look like? (e) No-one took any responsibility for anything. (f) Shabby clothing worn by staff and shabby service - outrageous. (g) Other customers complaining, but no-one offered any assistance or help. 4. Facilities () We were forced to stay one night, but half of the children's amusements were not working. (b) Breakfast on Sunday morning - disgusting; swimming in grease/fat/water. (c) No speed limit on site, despite most families having small children and dogs. 5. Despite being offered a full refund and money returned within 2 days, no action was taken in this respect until we contacted Hoseasons on 31 August, who told us John Fowler had not done anything about this and immediately processed the refund. If we had not obtained written confirmation of the full refund (which was not offered and, when requested, was given reluctantly), we are quite sure the refund would have been denied. We will never recommend this site and certainly never return; we are astonished that it is still misrepresenting the facilities; it should be closed down.

Just returned from a week at this so-called holiday park & very disappointed with everything about the place, ie: accommodation was absolute rubbish, beds hard as nails, carpet filthy & bed settee & falling apart . flatscreen tv lol what a joke you need binoculars to watch it, its that small. Food on site was not very good but very good Indian opposite site. Also the prices they charge to stay there are a complete joke!!. The company & site have lost my custom thats for sure!!.

“Dodgy Council Estate”

If you want concrete chalets, rusted metal, empty planters, flooded swimming pool changing rooms, crazy golf made out of bricks, run down play area, no attempt at landscaping, stains on the furniture and kicked in doors, then Ilfracombe Holiday park is for you...Was there anything good about this park? Erm...let me think...in a word...NO. We couldn't believe what they charge at the height of the season - rip off just isn't in it. For the sake of a little planting, some painting and decent cleaning, they could improve the place considerably. Says a lot that they haven't bothered.

We booked this for my birthday & anniversary in October 2013 ,we were told we had been upgraded to a 3 bed apt ,when we found it was right at the very end we opened the door & was smelly & grotty stains on the carpet ,dirty bed settie. We went back to reception to ask if they had one nearer & she said no but have got one over the main road .we said no because we had a disabled son then she said we could have a caravan in Combe Martin ..when we asked if we could have the one that we booked she said no it's been allocated we asked why we had been upgraded she just said we thought it would be better for you ,,It's as though she did not want to know We brought some cleaning stuff & made the best of it . We were going to come home but we had paid out so much money we stayed but we went out every day & stayed out most of the day ... We will not be coming back here again !!!!'!!!!!

“Never again!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by julesthebear on 02/11/2012

We were really looking forward to our holiday, we had never stayed at a John Fowler site before and the brochure looked inviting. When we were given out room we were devastated to say the least. The staircase up to the room was rusted , the paint work on the frontdore all worn away and it looked condemed. Inside it smelt damp and the walls were cracked from the ceiling down to the floor. It had very small windonws which had views of the walls so no light was coming in. Carpets didn t fit, wardrobes were wobbling when I opened the door, cutains hanging off the rail. The sofa bed was disgustinly dirty, and the tv was so tiny I didnt think there was one. We all felt unsafe in the room and my husband went down to reception to ask to be moved. They were helpful and moved us across the road to the manor house which was still uninviting but 50 times better than whar was first offered to us. It was cold, so we just put the cooker on (yes there was one) but I wouldnt recommend cooking on it, as I put something in there to cook but couldnt open the door! Well I finally got it opened but not without a fight, needless to say I didnt cook again, disappointed as we brought loads of shopping! Gladly the fridge was working. There was a lot of condesation in the room, yes it was an old building but I couldnt get the windows open whicfh casued a load of build up of water on the window sills. It was a noisy building doors slamming etc, but I could put up with that. But the worst thing of all was the beds, they were so hard and uncomfortable I had a bad neck by day 5 we decided to go home, so we lost out on a couple of days holiday! The clubhouse was good, nice atmosphere and we used the swimming pool a few times. Entertainment wise it was ok, better than sitting in your room anyway, I think the team deserve a pat on the back really as they seemd to turn their hand at everything. Its a shame as the place is in an ideal spot for Tesco and a walk into Ilfracome. The whole place needs a refurbishment in my opinion even if it does mean charging a bit more, Im sure people would appreciate a nice warm inviting room, where the TV works and the beds are more comfortable especially in the winter months as the weather is so wet! Needles to say that I wouldnt be recommending this to anyone, or be staying again.

“Never again!!”

written by on 27/08/2012

We travelled 5 hours to the Ilfracombe site, the children were really excited to be going on holiday. The Chalet we were put in was damp, mouldy, dirty and there was even a dirty sock left on the floor!!! The microwave was rusted, the heater didn't work, the shelf in the oven kept collapsing and the fridge kept defrosting, leaving everything wet. Every morning I woke with a headache and did not have a full nights sleep due to the most uncomfortable bed in the world. I paid quite a bit for this holiday and cannot fault Ifracombe and the surrounding areas, they are beautiful. Please beware that you would be better sleeping on the beach rather than in this resort!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“you could learn from our mistakes !”

written by on 20/08/2012

We spent about 7 hours to get there, only to find that the room we had been given was very musty and dirty, carpet dirty long and short curtains,(mind you they did hide the cobwebs) small old tv in the corner that didnt work and was just a snowy picture most of the time. When it came to bed time, well it would have been more comfortable to have stayed in the car, at least we wouldn't have had the springs in our backs. Very very noisey from doors banging and people talking as we could hear all. We had stayed hear ABOUT 9 YEARS AGO but this place has really really gone to the DOGS. We should have stayed for a week but we couldn't stand anymore and left earlier. The entertainment wasn't in our oppinion anything worth going to see. NOT WORTH THE MONEY !!!!!

“A messed up place”

written by on 18/08/2012

Me and my family went to John Fowler Ilfracome and we were shocked! The beds were uncomftable, the TV had no channels the toilet looked as if someone threw up on it, the bath was full of mould, the Carpets were full of filth and other revolting stuff, the curtains were to short, the doors were broken,no room for a cot when the receptionist said there was and much more bad things. the only good thing about "John Fowler" was it was close to the beach. We were supposed to stay for 4 days and leave at 10 in the morning (Not enough time)but we only stayed 3 becuase it was that bad. The entetainment was really bad and the pool well it looked reall yellow and mouldy. There was no internet you have to pay £4 for it (RIP OFF WHEN YOU CAN GET IT FREE) and it would of been pointless as the internet was realy slow and didnt reach were we stayed. I RECOMEND NOT TO STAY HERE!!! 0/10

my mum and dad have been going to john fowler or 11 years, 10 of those years they stayed in the same chalet number 2, howerver august 2011 they where told they could not have number 2 becouse it was being pulled down so they gave them another chalet, on arrivel for there holiday they found the chalet was cold and damp and musty, there first night was a disaster my dad who had hart problems felt like he could not breath with he damp and cold the next day got worse the toilet broke and was leaking sewidge into the bathroom my brother who goes with them complained to reception about the problem got no joy until the assistant manager mat went to the chalet and seen the problem first hand and after suffering an asthma attack himself moved my family to another chalet howerver the damage was already don as far as my dads health was conserned. my dad was taken to hospital with a chest infection and later when home found he had pneumonia they got a begrudged £80 compensation from john fowler but they still rebooked for 2012 holidays there. my dads health got worse and he sadly died 21.3.2012 my mum contacted john fowler to cancell the 2012 holiday but was told she had to put it in writing stating the death of my dad on 5.4.2012 my mum got a letter off john fowler conferming her canselation but to get her deposit of £60 back she MUST SEND A COPPY OF MY DADS DEATH CERTIFICATE, how low can john fowler stoop to save £60 after going there for 11 years.

“A total waste of money”

★☆☆☆☆

written by _vikkie_ on 17/06/2011

We arrived at dinner time only to be told we'd have to entertain ourselves somewhere for 2 hours because our accomodation wasn't ready yet, when we got back to the site we spent all of 10 minutes in the caravan before making a complaint and being upgraded. The seating area had completely collapsed at one end. The lights didn't work properly. The toilet seat wasn't connected properly + the shower area was filthy. We were told the caravan had been cleaned thoroughly before we'd arrived yet I'd be surprised if it had even been given a quick wipe over with a damp cloth, the whole place was generally quite grimy. When we made a comment about this we were asked 'Well, what do you expect for a bronze caravan?' To be fair after paying nearly 400 pounds and driving for just under 6 hours we expected somewhere clean and comfortable which I don't think is much to ask. I'm also quite annoyed about the fact that we arrived with an 8 year old only to find we've been put in a caravan right next to the cliff edge with only a few bits of wood between the van and the cliff, that's not just irresponsible it's plain stupid. The second van was at least bigger but unfortunately not much better. The whole place was damp and cold (possibly because the strip of rubber was hanging off of the outer door which let in a draught) We spent one whole day with every heater on + the fire (although that was pointless because the fire didn't work properly) just to heat the place up a bit (I wouldn't have minded so much if it had been winter but it was mid June!) Half of the lightbulbs were missing and out of the ones left some didn't work so we spent most of the time in semi darkness, we refused to go out and buy some because it wasn't up to us to do it and no-one else seemed bothered about sorting out the problem. Out of 3 bedrooms the lights in one didn't work at all so we used that room for storing clothes, shoes etc, unfortunately by the end of the week everything smelled slightly damp. Again the toliet seat wasn't connected properly and the shower was cleaned before anyone would use it. Most meals were either eaten out or we stuck to sandwiches etc because the oven was terrible to use, it either made funny noises or took 15 minutes to light by which time no-one was hungry. The shop was handy but far too expensive, the pool closed at 5 every night which was plain silly seeing as there wasn't much else for children to do and the entertainment area was just too much hassle. All the tables were too close together making it difficult to even move once you'd sat down and once in there you had a choice of karaoke or Bingo and nothing else which wasn't much fun for kids. Overall the days we spent out were great and the town was a lovely place but we couldn't wait to go home just to get away from the site, it is a place we'd think about visiting again at some point but there's no way we'd set foot near that particular site, to put it politely it was awful!

“The accommodation was disgusting. I worked for over...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 21/05/2011

The accommodation was disgusting. I worked for over twenty years in a residential hostel for homeless persons and our accommodation been in the same state as Folwlers accommodation I could not have put anyone in there :
It smelt of dampness, was dirty and very unappealing. In the mornings there were snail trails all over the carpet. The walls were damp, as was the bed and bedding. The list of things that did not work just got longer as time went on. The access door was almost impossible to open, having to be physically lifted to be able to turn the key. The cooker, shower and toaster did not work. The bed was the most painfully uncomfortable I have ever had the misfortune to try sleeping in. To call the accommodation grotty would be a compliment...it was far worse than grotty.
The so called entertainment ( a comedian) was abysmal in the extreme. Do the owners or managers of this place know what they are booking, or was he just cheap?

“Unbearable! This holiday camp is a thing of the past....”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 27/03/2011

Unbearable! This holiday camp is a thing of the past. It should either be bulldozed down, or made into a museum!!!!!
We checked in at 6.20pm and checked straight out again at 6.25pm! The place resembles an army barracks. It looks as if it has not changed since the hi-de-hi' hey day! I'm sure that this style of holiday suits a lot of people, but the actual accommodation is totally unacceptable in this day and age. The 'chalet'(!) is very small, the decor is awful, the room was chilly cold, condensation on windows (and it was a warm sunny march day), the bed was a thin hard slab, when I sat on the sofa in dismay - it offered no support, the kitchenette comprised a sink drainer (how you would cook in a self-catering way is a mystery), the drawer was smashed and broken My wife and I were absolutely aghast!

written by on 17/01/2011

VERY POOR.
it looked like we were on a council estate in london.
The parking was atrocious and our apartment wasnt much better.
We got into our apartment and toko one look around before leaving again.
The rooms were small and mouldy, no electricity.
The plugs did work and were cracked.
The bathroom was appalling, there was urine in the mouldy bath and there was feces in the toilet.
the carpet was filthy and i wouldnt let my 2 toddlers on it without shoes on.
it was very built up

DONT GO THERE

“My whole family stayed at John Fowler Ilfracombe in...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by kezzaanne on 27/12/2010

My whole family stayed at John Fowler Ilfracombe in May of last year and it appears nothing has changed. It has to be the WORST week of my life- having said that we left early as we could not bear it any longer. The place is like a concentration camp. Accomodation= damp running off the walls, heaters that don't work, windows running with condensation, everything filthy dirty, constant smell of sewage in the bathroom, dishwasher swimming in fat, I could go on and on. Facilities= dirty swimming pool with no proper changing rooms, same 'entertainment' every night, extortionate drinks prices, on site snack/restaurant serve food for very limited periods of time and not on Sundays. When I queried this I was told by a member of staff that Tescos was up the road if i was hungry!! Staff on reception in particular i found rude and confronational. I overheard one guest ask for help with something to be told by the receptionist he had about three minutes of her time as her shift finished then and she was closing the shutter!! Customer service clearly not a strong point!
After 4 days when we could stand it no longer and checked out the staff did not appear at all bothered and did not question why we wanted to leave early.
Having spent about £300 for the week I feel we got off lightly looking at what some people paid on here for a 'holiday' in this hell hole.
All I can say is it was a relief to get back to the comfort of my own home. For those who aren't sure and appreciate comfort, cleanliness and good facilities when PAYING GOOD MONEY for a HOLIDAY do not go to John Fowler Ilfracombe !!

“If I'm being completely honest the only good thing...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 10/10/2010

If I'm being completely honest the only good thing about this holiday park were the people at reception, they were friendly and helpful. As soon as you arrive they give you a massive pack of leaflets with local(ish) places that you could go and visit and this is pretty much where the good came to an end. After being given the key both my partner and I walked over to our chalet, which the internet site, and one of the people i had spoken to on the phone described as modern with a lovely stretch of grass that you could have bbq's on. So understandably when i walked over this overgrown grass to see these absolutely disgusting white (well now brown) buildings standing in front of me I actually start to laugh because it was so far from what i had been told. When we entered the chalet it smelt extremely damp and of cigarettes and the inside certainly wasn't modern, during our stay i discovered that the bath wasn't that clean, all of the bedding was damp, and the cutlery was greasy, the sieve had old pasta stuck in the holes and the bathroom door had mould growing all over it. The sofas were better as they didn't smell but i couldn't help but not want to sit down on them because of the general rank feeling of the whole building. As far as noise at night time, there wasn't really any, and the only noises i heard during the day were other people saying how horrible they thought it was and how one person had found dog hairs all over their bed.

Ilfracombe in general i have to say i found really quite boring with very little to do, the weather wasn't great at all and I didnt really fancy spending my day in the arcade centre. Had the weather been nice there did seem like a few good places for walking. We ended up leaving a day early on sunday morning having arrived friday night due to the horrible chalet and the lack of things to do in Ilfracombe. I really would NOT recommend this as a holiday destination.
