    The most appalling telephone service I have ever encountered, and I have encountered bad telephone service in the past.

    I opened a flexible saver account with Citibank, only to discover a month later that I didn't need the account. Having never used it, I wanted to request account closure (I don't want an unused open account in my name).

    I spent 1 hour 15 minutes on the phone (thankfully, an 0800 number) and, at the end of the call, I was back to square one.

    In summary, I had to activate the account before it could be closed but, each time I was transferred in order to do this, the wait was at least 20 minutes only then to find I wasn't speaking to the correct person and they'd have to transfer me again. By the time I was 1h 15m in, I told the member of staff that I was no longer willing to hold and was told that the only way to carry out my request, without further holding, would be to set up internet banking and do it that way. So - hold for at least another 20-30 minutes (at best) or 'go and do it yourself'

    Never ever again.

    Their website clearly says if you open a Citibank current account with them, you will have an automatic £500 interest-free overdraft buffer. In fact, it will not be available if you do not have your salary directly credited into your account. They don't even send you a cheque/pay-in book if you do not have £2000 credit in your account. Nothing says so on their T&C's, and why would you put funds in without the ability to use your own money?

    If you are trying to setup an account online, good luck. You must have a landline to setup an account. If your only phone is a cell phone or VOIP phone they will not open an account. Also, it appears that the Citibank Direct Current Account customer support is in India, as out of the 6 phone calls I made, 5 had Indian accents.

    I am very happy with my Citibank Direct current account. They were very efficient in setting up the account, which we opened mainly because of the attractive interest rate. You can view the statements online, and they also send paper statements. Otherwise, not much else to say - which is a good thing! They are so much better than Halifax.

    Citibank direct is an excellent service - easy to use - the site is laid out well and it is easy to transfer money and pay bills - can't recommend it highly enough except that sometimes the telephone customer service is irritating, asking too many security questions.
