Good Points: Free eye test offered via Nectar card and 500 reward points to entice me to D and A.
Bad Points: I booked an eye test at the Strand D and A to discover third hand about seemingly extra costs and no prescription for three months!
General comments: I booked an eye test with The Strand 4th September 2008 (free - with extra reward points). I was told that after my contact lenses were issued, I would be given another appointment one week later and that I would not receive my prescription for another three months and that this was now 'the law in this country.' I complained to Nectar who would not intervene despite their promotion of D and A. I complained to D and A and they contacted me to explain that my prescription would be issued after three months with the final appointment costing £40 which is waived if I signed up to their 'contact lens by post' scheme. Whilst none of this was explained to me by the Strand branch properly, I can understand the need to make a profit. However, it does appear that to save money / get a good deal, I was being coerced into staying with D and A by signing up to schemes and with them holding onto my prescription for three months. I could be given my prescription early but it would be 'annotated' as issued before the three months to cover D and A. My question is; if the Government recommendation for sight tests is 12 months for contact lens wearers and 18 months for spectacles, what can possibly change in 3 months before prescription issue? If anything has changed in that time, perhaps the sight test was wrong? I cancelled the appointment and the whole thing has left a bitter taste.

The whole eye test felt very rushed, I didn't understand any of the procedures being carried out, nothing was explained to me and I came out questioning the quality of the test results. Didn't find it a pleasant experience whatsoever. The test took 15 minutes while a leaflet in the waiting room indicated that an eye test should take 30 minutes. Now I'm going to have to go elsewhere to have another eye-test. I wrote to their customer services department but have yet to receive any response.

Overall a premier supplies, badly let-down (repeatedly) by sub-optimal administration systems in the back office. 2009 may be the final straw for me...

I cannot recommend D&A highly enough. As a student, breaking my glasses was horrific; I couldn't see the blackboard in lectures (a problem when you're being taught horrible quantum mechanics), and couldn't read the OHP they use for test questions.
As I'd worn hard contact lenses before, D&A gave me some soft ones to take away with me to tide me over until my glasses came. They also set me up with 10 contact lenses per month, as they worked out that was all I needed as I only wanted them for s ...

Dollond & Aitchison - I used to go to another well-known optician but I changed because I was virtually forced into having the puffer test (air blown into eyes to check for glaucoma). Both myself and my husband found this test very uncomfortable. Dolland & Aitchison can offer this test - but they don't force you to have it or threaten to write to your doctor if you don't comply! They do ask you some questions about your lifestyle. I found a coupon in Tesco magazine for a free eye test and 20% of ...
