Good Points: Great graphics, good music, interesting plot, characters are interesting.
Bad Points: Vehicle sections are hard to control, boring cover art.
General comments: When I first picked up Headhunter, I wasn't expecting a particularly good game. I felt that it would pass the time for an hour or two and then that'd be it. The blurb and the pictures on the back didn't persuade me either about the game. It was only when I actually got the game into my Dreamcast that I actually realized how good a game it was.
The plotline follows Jack Wade, a professional Headhunter (Essentially a bounty hunter) who has just escaped from a medical facility. However, when he wakes up after collapsing in a street, he has lost his memory. He then gets offered a mission to find a Mafia Don in exchange for $2 million. Throughout the game, Jack does everything to bring the Don down while trying to regain his old memories.
Starting off with the graphics, I have to say that they really impressed me. I was expecting a sub-standard game and instead got given one of the best looking games on the Dreamcast! The levels and characters are very well designed. The game isn't a graphical slouch and it certainly shows here.
The music in the game is actually quite good. It isn't impressive, brilliant or original but it's suitable for the genre of game it's in. The action/espionage tunes help to give the game some atmosphere and gives the game that extra boost needed to interest gamers.
The game-play in Headhunter is varied. The main mode of control, in third person is handled well and I didn't find it hard to control my character. It was hard to aim grenades at times but otherwise this mode was simple to use. The second mode of control, when you're driving, is handled worse. The motorbike is very hard to control and it is a common sight to crash it into a wall or another car. You'd have to be a master in order to control this properly.
Headhunter isn't a great game by any means but it was far better than what I was expecting. For a fiver, I got a game that was great to play but had a few niggles in between. That's not a bad deal. I just wish they'd improve the vehicle sections, and then it would be even better. As it stands, Headhunter is a game you should buy if you have the cash, just don't expect brilliance.
