I was quite amused to read the review that called the restaurant 'hideous'... LOL... it is very quaint and basically decorated, that is correct, but you go to a restaurant to eat at the end of the day. The food is always excellent and the service is warm. The waiters are always very helpful and the atmosphere intimate as it is so small. I find the fact that it is so quaint quite attractive. I often dine in 'up market' and modern restaurants, which look wonderful but the food is no better.... (read more)

Awfull I took my Wife and Children to Umbertos yesterday for the first time and I am still quite depressed by the whole experience. I have never felt compelled to write a review before this. Apperance and atmosphere. Hideous I should have gone with my gut reaction and turned around and walked straight back out again. The restaurant is tatty with holes in the plasterbaord, ( presumably where some one has punched it). The decor resembles one of those '' Traditional English pubs'' that you... (read more)

I have to Umbertos's twice this year & plan to go back this weekend for my partner's birthday.
The place is warm, welcoming & very friendly.
The food is of a very high standard & each time I have been, I could not finish my meal so they glady gave me a doggy bag to take home which I thought was very nice - they woud rather I took it home & ate it than it be wasted.
It is a small family run restauant, good food, good wine & good atmosphere.
For a local eatery, slightly pricey but you get...

Umbertos is a friendly family run restaurant. Every effort is made to make people feel relaxed and comfortable. Food is freshly cooked on the premises and is always of a good standard. I have been to Umbertos to celebrate several family events and I have never been disappointed with the standard of the service or the quality of the food. (read more)

i went there for the first time and I had calves liver, it was huge very greasy, no ssauce unless you paid extra, the bacon was greasy streaky bacon the onions was some sort of reconstituted mess, no mashed potato or crushed new potatoes to go with it, all the vegetables were extra. The liver tasted as if it was reconstituted very very soft and unappetising! Another guest had Veal Millanese which was not crispy but soggy and no spaghetti with it! Another had Lasange which she said was... (read more)

The atmosphere is friendly its like sitting in a family members home, the service is exceptional I always feel so welcome when I eat here the staff are superb. At one particular meal the waiter played his guitar. When you look around the restaurant you can see little bits of Italy.
The food is lovely I love the way the vegetables come up seperatly the plate is not overwhelemed with food you cannot finish. I have never had a bad meal here.
I reccommed this restaurant and will continue to...

My wife and I go to Umberto's Chalice for our wedding anniversary every year. It is an amazing little place and would not change it for the world.
The food is very authentic and specials are to die for. Rustic homemade Italian food what more could you ask for.

The food at Umberto's Chalice wasn't up to the standard that I expected as I had heard so much about this restaurant. I thought the food was tasteless and luke warm and we had to wait for the vegetables for a while.
I wouldn't use this restaurant again as I have eaten in better Italians for less.

good service and friendly but as Umberto's Chalice was almost empty it was not perhaps the best night to pass judgement
i thought was quite cold i also could understand why they had a service charge for parties of over 5 people
I thought the food was average quality but the prices were very much on the high side which I feel is probably why the restaurant was almost empty

Food at Umberto's Chalice is fantastic. Atmosphere is authentic italian as are the waiters and the food. If you like quality, authentic italian food then you will appreciate all this place has to offer. I couldnt fault a thing. It is real quality through and through. If you know what good, quality food is then you will like this place, if not, stick to mac'ds!
Highly recommended, great atmosphere, family friendly and faultless service. A real hidden gem.

28th June 2005.
My guest and I found the Umberto's Chalice restaurant excellent we could not find fault with the service or the food. Our choice of food varied therefore we had a wide range to give our opinions on. I suggest you ignore any of the bad comments on this web site and give it a try. We hope to visit again soon, we will try a Friday or Saturday of course it will be busier and the service may be a bit slower, but chill, enjoy yourself.

I could not fault Umberto's Chalice, it's a friendly restaurant, the food was excellent and the service was second to none. This is probably one of the best places I've ever been to eat; the starters were very well prepared and served. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the vegetables were worth paying extra for, we was not rushed through our meal, and was left to sit and relax after we'd eaten. the staff went out of there way to make us feel comfortable and relaxed. defiantly... Umberto's Chalice - Overpriced and poorly cooked and presented. I ordered steak and was served veal. I have never or will never eat veal in my life, just my principles I'm afraid. You order your main course and then have to pay extra for your potatoes and veg!! The food wasn't even nice. Pasta was soggy. The sauce was too rich and overpowering.....I could go on. My advice is to avoid at all costs. (read more)

I disagree with this review because...
<br/>i have eaten there a few times and the food has always been amazingly and very authentically italian. I personally disagree with everything (except the fact the service was great) and can not name fault with the place. I couldnt reccommend more strongly.

I have been there many times and have never had an experience like yours. Yes the decor is dated but I would like to call it quaint myself. The food and service are always excellent in my view and I eat at Smith Brasserie and other 'trendy'restuarants. You have either had a bad one off experience or was on drugs on the day in question lol
