Good Points: Depending on business, you can get long periods of time off work. Very little physical effort. Once a body is in the machine, you usually have to wait at least 2 hours, and you can read, or basically do what you want.
Bad Points: Irregular hours. There have been times where I had to work all day and all night because there were many rushed cremations. Depending on business you could work many days without a break. It can also be quite stressful, having to be exactly on time, all the time. It can sometimes be, for lack of a better word, gross. It can be emotionally draining when families come out to the crematorium to witness the cremation. Also, in the middle of summer, the crematorium gets very, very hot, so their is a lot of sweating going on. One last thing is that the cremation machine is surprisingly loud, probably loud enough that it could damage hearing if you are in the machine room for a long enough time without ear protection.
General comments: Although being a Crematorium Technician can be gross, for the most part it probably isn't as bad as most people think. You probably will usually have to look at the body, and gloves are worn when touching the body. On occasion, in certain crematoriums, it is also the operator's job to remove pacemakers. This can be a little unnerving at first, but the more you do it, the easier it becomes. If the sight of dead bodies bothers you, then this job isn't for you. If you don't like the thought of being alone at night with a number of dead bodies for long stretches of time, then this job isn't for you. If none of that bothers you, then this is a relatively easy job.
