“My favourite (fish) restaurant of all time”

★★★★★

written by RichardWoods on 04/09/2013

Where to begin? I think I first used this very special place about 15 or more years ago. I was working then and able on occasion to use it for clients as well. It always impressed. I reckon I have eaten here, lunch and dinner, about 20-25 times. And I shall return again and again. The lunchtime menu offers two or three courses and includes a dessert for about £23 a head. Dishes are consistently interesting and about 95% perfect. Which means the odd failure which they deal with charmingly and immediately. The a la carte is a more serious proposition and will probably end up closer to £50 a head. Wines are excellent and the house are especially good value - my favourite is a Gascoinge white at £14.50 which is quite superb. The fish dishes are of course a speciality and cover the full range. Accompaniments tend to be locally sourced and well prepared - unlike so many French restos they even cook the squeaky beans enough! Off pesce they are still excellent - their liver is to die for. Go on, give them a go. And think about their sister restaurants, the amazing Great House at Lavenham and the good idea, The Mariners on the harbourside at Ipswich.

Just moved to Bury St Edmunds and Maison Bleue was a great discovery!
A taste of France in Bury St Edmunds! We have been 3 times since June and enjoyed every moment.
Such a pleasant and relax atmosphere with great food and service.

“Been to Maison Bleue three times. First time...”

Been to Maison Bleue three times. First time excellent. Second time we booked for my wife's birthday (Dec 13th). Asked for a quiet table and specifically asked for no Christmassy bits. Table location OK but subjected to crackers and holly on the table - hastily removed! I asked when booking whether the standard menu was on, but on arrival was presented with cut down Christmas menu. Meal OK, but otherwise not impressed.

Third - and final time - we ate here we were pushed to an early booking. Restaurant was 90% empty. Waiter hovered while we ate starters and got the distinct impression they wanted to hurry us through and turn the table.

Ordered duck cooked pink. This arrived stone cold and I think it had been sitting round for a while as we were a bit slower than they wanted with the starter. We sent it back. It was replated on a warm plate and represented. Still stone cold. Management told us that when duck is cooked this way, less heat is applied to it and it is therefore understandably cooler. My wife asked how that explained the cold vegetables - a good point I thought. We were then told that if the food was not to our liking we should take ourselves elsewhere.

We left and have not been back since - there are plenty of other good restaurants in Bury to choose from where you are not thrown out if you send the food back. At any price, I don't expect this treatment, but at £100 plus life is just too short....

It is always an absolute delight to eat here, in fact I invent reasons to go to Bury in the hope I'll be passing at lunchtime! In the evening it can be a bit (justifably) pricey, but that just makes the lunchtime menu even more tempting.

The service is faultless, but never sniffy, and we are always made very welcome. The food is well presented, but it is never a case of style over substance. Excellent and highly recommended.

had high expectations of Maison Bleue after all the hype, starters were good if not pricey, I felt I experienced poor service and the main was unedible.

Maison Bleue is a pleasant restauarant with a nice atmosphere, friendly staff, and the chef is helpful if you dont like the menu.

Quality food, well presented at a reasonable price, always a pleasure to eat here.

Maison Bleue is the sort of place that you would reserve for special treats, but its lunchtime menu and 'specials' board mean it's affordable more frequently. The French family who run the restaurant are welcoming and eager to please, and the decor is stylish in a seasidey, rustic sort of way, which strangely helps you enjoy the food more(I've never noticed this as much anywhere else.) Whatever you pick on the menu will not disappoint, as fresh local ingredients, well cooked by people with an obvious knowledge of and passion for food, can never be wrong. It's as good to look at as it is to eat, and the wine list equals the food. It would be hard to chose a favourite dish, and the menu changes with the seasons, but my most perfect meal would have to be a starter of crab cakes, plump and seasoned to perfection with a sweet chilli jam, and fragranced leafy garnish, followed by melt in the mouth cod baked in a herby polenta crust, with fresh seasonal vegetables (on the last occasion, buttery new potatoes, green beans, baby carrots and cauliflower mornay), and if your waistline can handle it, the dreamiest of creme brulee's with its crisp burnt sugar top and rich creamy custard speckled with fresh vanilla.... my mouths watering just writing it! There's also always a lovely touch like handmade truffles with your coffee, and seasonal treats such as the tiniest mince pies at Christmas, and little chocolate eggs at Easter, little touches that make you want ot go back again and again....and again!
