“Fees for everything”

Written on: 16/03/2017 by Kylie193 (1 review written)

Useless staff, can never get through to anyone, no online maintenance possible and fees for absolutely everything. Quotes are good just pray you never have to ring them for anything. This is a joke of a company compared to everyone else I have been with. Made me want to cancel my policy but guess what? £50 fee.... Policy was only £96 for the year… Read Full Review

Why not take out temporary cover with an insurer who offers short term insurance instead of agreeing to take out insurance for a year that you then choose to cancel. Unless you were told it was a pay as you go insurance then you should expect to be charged a fee for early termination.
You wouldnt take out a phone contract for a year with x amount of free minutes and then expect you can cancel that after a few months with no charge then why is bike insurance expected to be different. You get more minutes based on you agreeing to have the phone for x months, if you want it on month by month basis then usually you are given far less minutes.
The fact is the price given is based on you riding the bike for a year. Its not a pro rata price where if its £96 for the year then that equtes to £8 per month. If you want a price based on you riding for a few months then according to statistics there is a higher risk of a claim. From an insurers point of view, insuring one person for a year is not the same as insuring 12 people for 1 month each or even say 4 people for 3 months each even though the length of cover for each scenario is the same.
cancellation fees are charged for 2 main reasons. The first is to compensate the insurer/deter people from taking out annual policies when they dont intend on completing the year. The second is quite simply its a revenue stream. I can pretty much guarantee that the £96 policy was a first year policy and was most likely set up at a significant loss to the broker. It makes no business sense to do this unless you have additional ways of making money which is cancellation and admin fees which a proportion of new customers will incur.
This may seem harsh but to survive in this market this needs to be done. If bennetts didnt charge any fees then to make up for it they would need to increase prices and the fact is they would lose a lot of customers as most people wont look at the price and say well its £20 or £30 more then what I can get elsewhere but at least there are no charges. They will go with the cheapest price as most people dont cancel policies or even make changes and even if they do they wont take that into consideration when taking out policies. Its all about the cheapest quote that they can get in the meerkat. As long as the market is like this the cancellatiin fees and admin fees will always be around.
The only way around this is to show loyalty. If you have been a customer for a few years then you could easily get charges waived, but most people see red when the insurer tries to add a bit of profit at renewal so how do they expect the business to make a profit lol.

“Dishonest and Sneaky”

Written on: 27/02/2017 by LindsayNeville (1 review written)

Besides the shocking customer service this is the worst company I have ever gone with for insurance. BE VERY AWARE OF THE FINE PRINT. Then when you question why they are charging you ridiculous amounts for cancelling the policy they will tell you that they would have told you that at the start if you had asked them if they would charge. The sales guys actually had the audacity to keep me on the phone arguing with me telling me that I have no right to call them dishonest and I eventually had to… Read Full Review

“Cancellation and Renewal..”

Written on: 06/02/2017 by Matias287 (1 review written)

First of all I'd like to say that being insured with Bennetts has and still is very good having been insured with them for 3/4 years now. Only one downside was recently when I rang up to inform then that I had sold my bike with the intention to purchase another bike over the next month or so and to stay with them for insurance cover only to be told that I had to cancel my insurance cover as I no longer had the bike and this would cost me £50 + any outstanding insurance. Having honestly only… Read Full Review

Automatic renewal option is not hidden in the documents, nor is it in small print. It is clearly stated in the policy summary. It even has its own sub header for heavens sake.
All this blaming the insurer for something that you have neglected to do at the start and not remembering when your policy is due for renewal is easy to do. Whats harder is admitting that ultimately its your insurance and your responsibility. Fair enough you didnt receive the renewal letter but again its your reesponsibility to contact the insurer to make sure that you dont want to renew. Their obligation is to send out a renewal invite not to guarantee that you will receive it.
Most likely if you forgot about calling bennetts you probably also didnt take out cover elsewhere. And the funny thing is if you left the bike uninsured and then received a fine from DVLA for not having insurance you would still blame bennetts for not renewing your policy and leaving you uninsured.

“I called to cancel my policy and was informed there...”

Written on: 23/12/2016 by Jent5279 (1 review written)

I called to cancel my policy and was informed there would be a £50 cancellation fee and extras on top because my policy had legal cover. My policy only lasted a few more months and the total amount didn't come close to the £56 they quoted me to cancel. Ive cancelled policies before with 2 other companies and never have I had to pay a cancellation fee even though according to the idiot on the other end of the phone all companies do it! Well I can assure you they do NOT! I will be taking this… Read Full Review

Th "idiot" shouldnt have had to tell you about the cancellation fee or about the extra products being non refundable. It is stated on your documents. There is no real need to fully research the company either. 5 minutes to read the documents that you are sent in regards to the contract that you have wilingly agreed to is all it takes.
And there is no way that you will be charged more than what you have agreed to pay for the year. If at cancellation you had £56 left or or even a pound left then that is all you will pay. The maximum you will be charged is what is left on the policy if it less than £50 of cover plus the remaining add ons.
As for other companies not charging a cancellation fee, maybe you just got lucky, but the fact is 99% of all insurers or for that matter any company that you enter a contract with have a cancellation or similar charge for early termination.
If paying a cancellation fee is that much of a concern that you see the need to warn others then why not ensure that there is no cancellation fee before taking out the policy.

There seems to be some confusion here. Bennetts are a broker. They have no control over the prices set by the underwriter that has been selected for your policy. That you think they dont care is irrelevent to the fact that you have signed up for a years insurance through bennetts with an underwriter which at the time would have been a competitive price based on your existing circumstances.
If you then make a change to the information that is used to calculate the risk then there is a chance then that the said underwriter will not be the cheapest. Most likely there is another underwriter with bennetts that would be cheaper but then bennetts cant simply change the underwriter unless they cancel the first contract and take out a brand new 12 month policy with the second one. That would involve significant costs to bennetts and would still mean having to pay more as then you are in effect paying for a longer period of cover.
And as for the admin fees, its not simply pressing a few buttons on a computer. To run a UK based call centre to make these changes costs millions. On top of this the underwriters need to be updated as well and the MID for which the broker is charged a fee. On top of all this the broker is running a business so are entitled to make a profit. There is very little money in setting up policies, in fact a lot of them are set up at a loss. As long as people keep changing insurers to keep getting the new business loss making deals then admin and cancellation fees will always be charged

Hard hand tatics when you need to change some think on your policy. eg address or worse if you cancel. Premium phone numbers, put on hold. So call has already cost pounds before you talk to some one. Cant email to cancel your policy. Have to ring number. And then will charge you big time to cancel. If I just put there name in on search engine in the first place would not of dealt with them. Soooo glad to get away from this and glad did not have to make a claim. Please research before you take… Read Full Review

Need to change your phone company. Bennetts use 03 numbers which cost the same as 01 or 02. Will not cost pounds unless you are on the phone for hours and I mean hours.
And you cant cancel by email for the simple reason that this can lead to potential severe complaints for bennetts as well as stressfull situations for customers. Someone that has a grudge with a person could easily cancel a policy if they wanted to and had acccess to their email. A simple example is a wife cancelling her husbands policy or vice versa if they are getting divorced.
Creating a way to make it easy to cancel someones policy without their knowledge is not sound business hence why to cancel a policy you need to call so at least there is a recording of that person doing it so if it does happen it can be traced back. And it is less likely for someone with a grudge to phone in compared to an anonymous email sender.
It is better to take a hundred calls to cancel a policy than taking one call where someone has been pulled by the police and fined and had bike impounded because they didnt know someone else had cancelled their policy

“they punish you for early cancellation”

Written on: 03/11/2016 by Vintageboots (1 review written)

I paid £160 for a 12 month insurance policy on my new bike, including breakdown cover and legal cover in the event of a claim. I then sold the bike after 3 months, and rang Bennetts to cancel my policy. They would only refund me £18.50 for the unused 9 months of my insurance. They have a very well rehearsed set of reasons which amount to a cast iron reason why they won't refund the unused premium. In effect, no matter what I tried to say, the Bennetts answer is essentially "we've got your… Read Full Review

“cheap but a Nightmare”

Written on: 15/10/2016 by garyb12 (4 reviews written)

Bennetts do seem to be pretty cheap compared with some of the others out there. I have insured a few motorbikes with them over the years but cheap is not necessarily the best, The phone lines seem to be a major major problem ! Examples of my bad experiences: I called to get a quote on a 1000cc bike that i was going to potentially buy, i was told that, We are very busy and there are no operators available to help but they would get someone to call me back within 24 hours! Took out a new motor cycle insurance policy and international breakdown recovery with Bennetts in July 2016.
