Been insured by Bennett's for a few months. Phoned them to say my address changed. They went through all my details and when I told them I was temporarily out of work they said they could no longer insure me unless I paid an extra £400 to one ofthere underwriters. Or paid them over £100 to cancel insurance so that I could get my no claims proof for another company. When on comparison site stating out of work it said they could insure me. The renewal process with Bennetts was fairly slick once I made it through to an operator. She was local to the UK able to speak English which helps, polite and efficient. However it did take me five phone calls over two days at different times to get through, staying on the phone for about 5 minutes before giving up each time, this was just to give them money, hate to think how long I'd have to wait for a claim. When my got my renewal in last year I had lost most of my No Claims Bonus due to a traffic accident that I wasn't involved in. Since I checked out renewal premiums on Bike Insurer I have been sent several confusing e-mails effectively giving me a countdown on renewal date not making it clear that Bike Insurer and Bennetts are two separate entities it would be soooo easy to think Bike Insurer were acting as Bennetts. Useless staff, can never get through to anyone, no online maintenance possible and fees for absolutely everything. Quotes are good just pray you never have to ring them for anything. Why not take out temporary cover with an insurer who offers short term insurance instead of agreeing to take out insurance for a year that you then choose to cancel. Unless you were told it was a pay as you go insurance then you should expect to be charged a fee for early termination.
You wouldnt take out a phone contract for a year with x amount of free minutes and then expect you can cancel that after a few months with no charge then why is bike insurance expected to be different. You get more minutes based on you agreeing to have the phone for x months, if you want it on month by month basis then usually you are given far less minutes.
The fact is the price given is based on you riding the bike for a year. Its not a pro rata price where if its £96 for the year then that equtes to £8 per month. If you want a price based on you riding for a few months then according to statistics there is a higher risk of a claim. From an insurers point of view, insuring one person for a year is not the same as insuring 12 people for 1 month each or even say 4 people for 3 months each even though the length of cover for each scenario is the same.
cancellation fees are charged for 2 main reasons. The first is to compensate the insurer/deter people from taking out annual policies when they dont intend on completing the year. The second is quite simply its a revenue stream. I can pretty much guarantee that the £96 policy was a first year policy and was most likely set up at a significant loss to the broker. It makes no business sense to do this unless you have additional ways of making money which is cancellation and admin fees which a proportion of new customers will incur.
This may seem harsh but to survive in this market this needs to be done. If bennetts didnt charge any fees then to make up for it they would need to increase prices and the fact is they would lose a lot of customers as most people wont look at the price and say well its £20 or £30 more then what I can get elsewhere but at least there are no charges. They will go with the cheapest price as most people dont cancel policies or even make changes and even if they do they wont take that into consideration when taking out policies. Its all about the cheapest quote that they can get in the meerkat. As long as the market is like this the cancellatiin fees and admin fees will always be around.
The only way around this is to show loyalty. If you have been a customer for a few years then you could easily get charges waived, but most people see red when the insurer tries to add a bit of profit at renewal so how do they expect the business to make a profit lol.
