“shrinking clothes”

★★☆☆☆

written by Christie444 on 03/01/2015

Two tops I have brought out of three have both shrunk in the wash, with NO tumble drying.

“Next recommend a friend scheme”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 20/05/2013

I would like to get across how good the suit is but I feel I should warn others about how bad my 'recommend a friend' experience has been. I bought the suit as part of the recommend a friend deal with my ushers and 2 best men and Next have messed up at every turn. They have failed to apply discounts and incorrectly opened 'cash' instead of 'credit' accounts meaning the £20 credits cannot be applied (even though I was advised this was not an issue). What is hugely concerning is that I have been told different things by different advisers which adds to the frustration. I have had to call a few times a week on an expensive '0844' number, for the last two months to get the credits applied and have racked up huge phone bills as a result. The positives however are that the waiting times are extremely quick. What is also misleading is that when using the deal, you cannot collect the items at the shop meaning you have no option but to pay the £3.99 delivery charge and the £3.75 catalogue cost, so the £20 reward actually becomes £12.26. So in short, good suits, ill advised customer service and misleading reward scheme.

“Not what they were”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 15/09/2012

I have used Next Directory for some time, handy and convenient in the past. Until recently it had been about a year since I had used them. I ordered a number of items (all in stock) on the 23rd August 2012. I received an email to advise they would be ready to collect on the 27th - great! The next I heard was on the 31st when they arrived so four days late. Unfortunatly the event these were for was on the 31st, but in a different city and so I was unable to collect so these were returned. Stupidly I decided to order a few more items before I go on holiday, however with a day to go these are also late. Looks like I need a quick trip elsewhere at the last minute thanks Next. Assuming they don't arrive in the morning these will also be returned. Worse of all though, whilst I've always had a DD established to pay in full each month, this seems to have deactivated. Since receiving my statement on August 30th, the money didn't leave on September 4th as it used to. Further there seems to be no mention of the DD on the statement or in the account menus. Concerned I messaged Next who adivsed not to worry, the money will be taken... Still, no sign of it leaving so to be sure I will have to pay the balance manually just in case. So potentially the money could be taken again, all for clothes which I haven't had. Next used to always meet or better their delivery times, they now seem to be unreliable. This coupled with higher prices, suits which need to be re-hemmed almost immediately come together to persuade me to go elsewhere in future. They have become Waitrose pricing with a Tesco service.

“Returns policy is very poor. It takes forever.”

★★☆☆☆

written by raphlino on 10/07/2012

I bought a jacket that was faulty and I returned it. It's almost a month and I haven't still received a refund. I called their customer service and an ignorant lady said they will notify me when they process it. She couldn't give me a date to expect the refund.

“Changing room closed "due to health and safety"”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 04/12/2011

Next's Gloucester store holds a fairly large stock of items at mostly slightly discounted prices. It's quite a way from the city centre so for me, and for many others, it's a special trip if I want to visit. The biggest problem with this store is that the changing rooms are always closed. Next sell a lot of jumpers, jeans and other items which are relatively high value and have a high chance of not fitting. There's no "one size fits all" for these kinds of items, so I think buying one without trying it on is just foolish. Unfortunately, having been in Next Gloucester on at least 12 occasions since it opened, the changing rooms are always closed. The store, and its changing rooms, are recently purpose built: someone went to a lot of trouble to ensure Next had changing rooms. Every time I have asked the staff if I could use it, but always the answer is no. I've had a different excuse every time. Ultimately the store manager told me they keep it closed at all busy times, because staff have got other things to do. Looking around, they have got a lot of standing around to do, laughing and joking with friends all day most days, so I can see that letting people into the changing rooms is tough for them. They're saying "we don't care if your clothes don't fit". Today a new low was reached. The staff have printed out a home-made-looking paper sign saying "these fitting rooms are closed due to health and safety reasons". This is at odds with all previous excuses, and it's clear from the staff that no-one really believes it. Obviously, there aren't any health and safety reasons, it's just easier to print out a sign than it is to work whilst actually at work. The upshot is that if you can be bothered to make a special trip the The Quays to visit Next, you have to take your chances with whether the items you buy will fit. If not, you have to make another special trip another day to bring the item back. I don't think so - life is just too short. Shop somewhere else instead!

“Online NEXT Directory”

★★☆☆☆

written by olgaslad on 08/11/2011

I have used online directory for a while. I prefer buying stuff on the Internet but NEXT customer service as regards returning items is terrible. If they collect an item you are returning you have to check that they credited your account as they occasionally fail to do that. I ordered a large mirror but it wasn't quite what I wanted so I tried having it collected within 7 days. They failed to collected it 4 times. Sales team on the phone keep wanting to rearrange the collection - I can't sit at home all day for 4 days and more, I have job. I think I will have to take it back myself. It's a large mirror and I wasn't sure if I would like it. The only reason why I decided to try was because they said I could have it collected if I didn't like it. Obviously not. I will not be ordering from the directory again.

“Agree with others that sizing is all over the place,...”

★★★☆☆

written by alex4819 on 05/04/2008

Agree with others that sizing is all over the place, whether tops, trousers, shoes, children's or otherwise. Avoid jersey tops which shrink badly. Children's shoe sizes especially are totally way out from the norm.
Sale days, yes, are a total manic mess.
My local store has nonchalent, young staff (Dumfries).
Very little stocked in this store in kids' section unless you are under 5.
Website is a nightmare to navigate now they've renewed it. Searching just reveals totally what you don't want.

“I always feel a bit odd telling people that I don't...”

★★☆☆☆

written by vherbertsmith on 16/09/2004

I always feel a bit odd telling people that I don't like Next, they look at me like I've got the plague. I am 5.9" and, although I can get longer trousers to fit me now, I find their tops and blouses too short and too wide. I have also had a couple of tops that have shrunk after washing. I do like their childrens clothes though. On the whole though I think Next is very overpriced and is relying on it's loyal customer base for continued support.

Also being 5'9", I have the same problem that they don't seem to realise being taller that your body and your arms are longer. (Hooray for the wide fit boots).

“Next has a good range of clothes, evening wear, casual...”

★★★☆☆

written by Belle16 on 20/08/2004

Next has a good range of clothes, evening wear, casual wear, work wear, and lots of shoes. Can sometimes be expensive for what you get- eg basic clothes- if you go to a different shop, you could get the same thing for half the price.

Sometimes, I find with Next that the staff are very selective about which customers they give assistance to- I've noticed that they always go to older women to offer them help but always ignore younger people.

I disagree with the point that you make about the staff being selective with who they serve, I work for Next (store 186). We offer a very high standard of customer service to all our customers young and old,and recogonise their needs and help them in all areas ie fitting room, till point and on the sales floor,

At Next, we pride ourselves on our customer service skills and are one of the best retailers on Britains high streets.

Belle16's Response to Belle16's Review

Written on: 15/01/2006

Next seem to pride themselves on having so called excellent customer service, however my experience with them says otherwise. In November 05, I bought a pair of shoes from there. After only 6 WEEKS WEAR, the sole has come off and they are obviously faulty. I returned the shoes to the store, with my recepit, and asked for an exchange. However, the manager refused saying that the damage was due to "normal wear and tear", and even had the cheek to tell me that i should think about buying a new pair of shoes! My argument is this- a pair of shoes, Im afraid, would not fall apart after only 6 WEEKS WEAR if they were not faulty, they are obviously not fit for the purpose. I have since compained to Trading Standards about this. I will NOT be shopping at Next again- their staff are rude and inflexible and their products are of substandard quality. PS To the person who works at Next, before you start slagging off my review, you might want to read the guidelines of this site- it is for the PUBLIC only, not for staff of businesses to comment.

Belle16's Response to Belle16's Review

Written on: 15/09/2004

I would just like to add that on the occassions I have been into Next and tried on garments, I have received excellent service from fitting room staff- they are always there to help very polite. Also when I have bought stuff the sales people have been very helpful, also when I needed to exchange a garment.

But I still think that front of house staff (ie the ones that stand by the door handing out info) are selective in who they offer information to.

Maybe it's just certain staff at my local store.

Well you work there so you would say that.
Only yesterday, I went in and there was a member of staff standing at the door handing out leaflets to customers. And guess what, I wasn't offered one.
