I had extremely high hopes before watching the show as when i was a child i had watched the lion king atleast 50 times! i am a huge disney fan, however somehow the lion king musical just didnt meet my expectations from disney.
the opening circle of life for 10 minutes was excellent and breathtaking. mufafsa and rafiki were very strong actors, however i found the child simba boring and dull to watch and listen to. the hyena scenes were unecesarily lenghty and boring and annoying. i was excited to listen to elton johns song, which wasnt sung as well i expected and was shortened! very dissapointing. i sat on the second row and paid £65 per seat, however it was indeed the worst place to sit as the stage was so high i couldnt even make out the characters simultaneously. my advice would be to sit atleast on the 10th row or behined, too close and you lose the flow.
i loved the song, he lives in you, sung sooo well by rafiki and mufasa (i would rate 3 out of 5 only for this one song). absolutely loved rafaikis character, brought to life really well. i love disney, and the lion king, but i just feel the best songs were just not portrayed as well as they deserved to be. second half was alot better and brighter than the first. first half just dragged abit, maybe because i just found the kid playing simba annoying to watch. the adult simba was good as was nala. on the whole however it was still better than the recent dissney on ice and beauty and the beast!!!

We saw the Lion King on Friday 23rd October 2009. It was SUPERB!! We loved it! Our Kids loved it! It works on so many levels. We were most looking forward to the characters of Timon and Pumbaa - our kids loved the spin off series that these guys had. We found that the guy playing Timon, Nick Mercer, was excellent, BUT it seemed to us adults that he was jealous whenever Pumbaa, brilliantly played by Keith Bookman, won the heart of the audience. There are certain 'tricks' that can be employ ...- Read Guest's review (193 words)

Our review from our trip to the Lion King at the Lyceum, London:
From the children (boys aged 7 and 9): "Loved it!"
From the parents: "Technically brilliant, emotionally flat, no stand-out songs or performances."
As a visual spectacle the show scored as well as any we've seen. The mechanical inventiveness of the animals was wonderful and the stage sets were equally impressive (our favourite was the Wildebeest stampede). Otherwise the show was disappointing. We talked about it afterwards a ...- Read KandC's review (165 words and 2 comments)

I saw this show last night and thought it was excellant. It was a surprise from my daughter for my birthday. The show was colourful and a visual delight. Music was very good especially the drums. Some excellant singing and comical characters, although could have been slightly shorter in length. Overall 'The Lion King' is a truly wonderful show with fantastic scenery and amazing animal costumes. A PURE DELIGHT

I really seriously cannot believe why there are such negative comments on here!!
If The Lion King was so bad then why did it win 11 awards altogether including 6 Tonys and an Olivier and won BEST Musical of the year?? And it was named "Unlike anything Broadway has ever seen"
For those of you who thought it was awful, you really have NO idea what real theatrical magic is! It's all a work of art!
And Julie Taymor was a creative genius!
True there were some parts that could have been worked on, but ...- Read Guest's review (124 words and 1 comment)

My mother and I Lion King left after Simba and Nala got to the elephant graveyard because what we saw was pretty much exactly like the cartoon. The show seemed kinda dead and in the 'circle of life" you couldn't here the words over the chanting of the chorus- Read Guest's review (49 words)

If you want something outstanding - extraordinary see Wicked Mary Poppins and We Will Rock You.
The Lion King just had no effect on me at all. It was so boring.
They could have at least improved on the setting and the scenery, the stage is big enough for that.
The opening scene was good with all the animals, that's why I gave it a 2. It should have carried on like that.
But with Wicked Defying Gravity scene and Mary Poppins flying out into the audience, now that is a WOW!Not something you woul ...- Read Guest's review (149 words)

The good points of the The Lion King was how they used extra large so that even people who are far away from the play or theatre can see what is going on. It is amazing how they could change your mood in just a blink of the eye from either sad to happy or happy to shocked. I would recommend everyone to watch the show because that is how brilliant it is. The play itself generally was amazing as it bought many emotions to the crowd. It was so brilliant the way they used funny characters with emot ...- Read Guest's review (198 words)

It was a wonderful atmosphere full of anticipation and colour to tell a great story almost like a carnival as the creatures promenaded onto the stage from the audience. The scenery and clever sets like the stampede were truly amazing. The story was portrayed in such away as to touch all emotions, a real mix of laughter and tears. I really loved it especially the real African sound in the music. Only bad point, little Simba's voice was a bit weak but he was cute and acted well- Read Guest's review (88 words)

Take The Lion King off broadway, its awful.
Went to see mary poppins the night before and that is a amazing musical
I have no idea how this show has lasted 10 years
just because a show sells out doesn't mean it,s any good. I think we all go in thinking how great the film is and you just get let down
The children were awful singers
just plain boring, if it wasnt for rafiki, timon and pumba and the price paid i would of left
I have seen around 15-20 shows mostly west end and this is by far the wor ...- Read chrisharnish's review (108 words)

I am shocked at how bad The Lion King was after looking forward to it so much and having heard nothing but raves about it - evidently I should have been looking here to get a general idea!
This evening got off to a bad start when I discovered just how claustrophibic and small the Lyceum is - you are practically in each other's laps and I found this a real let down, especially as I had paid top dollar for these seats thinking that, if nothing else, we would be comfortable - WRONG. You are trul ...- Read plb2009's review (324 words)
