Good Points: Quiet hallways and public areas, and very polite fellow guests who were generally unobtrusive and respctful of others.

Bad Points: Suite was not well maintained and we had to get many items fixed. HAL should do their own quality control and not expect passengers to do it for them-shower head broken; toilet seat broken; water temperature always boiling; mirror doors did not stay closed; bathrobes poor quality; pillows terrible and smelled of sweat; carpet stained; not enough hangers in closets.

General comments: The passengers are nearly all American/Canadian,and HAL caters to their tastes. So lots of burgers/salads/icewater/sugary desserts/terrible coffee and freezing air con in restaurants and public areas. The staff are willing, but not very competent.T hey don't know or have a background in how things should be, so they don't know when it is not right and get confused when you tell them that something is not right-pasta/rice wayo vercooked; food very salty; often served tepid at best; wine glasses overfilled; either we waited too long for food or it all arrived together. After a few days we just ordered room service and found that this was much better in terms of quality and precision. There are extra charges for everything. We had to ask for Fresh water each time in our suite-other cruise lines refresh this automatically several times a day. While we were in a suite, we found there were no "extras". Other cruise lines do more for suite passenegers. The "specialty" restaurants were poor and not worth the extra money-again poor staff who did not know how to serve properly; freezing aircon which makes the food instantly cold and mediocre cuisine-the level is really that of a chain of American steakhouses, rather than a European fine dining level. I think you are better off getting a top end suite in a less expensive cruise line, rather than a regular suite at HAL as the Hal expense will be far higher for not much real value to the passneger. A top suite at Costa is far less expensive and you get butler service; free hors d'oevres and champagne each day at a cost which is well below what Hal charges for a regular suite.

MS Westerdam is the third of HAL's new vista class of cruise ships & also the third one to bear this name. Vista class ships are much larger than the older ships that HAL made it's name with & are designed to appeal to a younger market segment than has been traditionally attracted to HAL. This review of the maiden voyage is by a mid 60's retired couple from UK who have cruised with HAL before & on several other lines.
