General comments: Rainbow Six: Black Arrow: The Tom Clancy games are well known for their ridiculous names and sub headings: Ghost Recon, Pandora Tomorrow, Rogue Spear etc. Now you can add Black Arrow to that list. I wonder if a group of suits sit around a desk at Ion Storm and just pick random words out of a hat. Hmmm

Whatever the story behind the names, the majority of the Tom Clancy games have been top drawer affairs; most featuring involving story lines, lots of gadgetry and stunning presentation. Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow is no exception. Picking up after the events of the original Rainbow Six 3, you reprise the role of Domingo 'Ding' Chavez, leader of a 4 man squad of anti-terrorist operatives sent in to diffuse hostage situations when the local police just aren't up to the job. This time around, Ding and co are hot on the trail of a new band of terrorists who are intent on starting global conflict. The game is basically a pseudo sequel to Rainbow Six 3, and it shows in the way the front end is almost identical, as is the training level. Basically, it's just more of the same, a bit like a PC expansion pack. But when it's as good as this, it really doesn't matter. Black Arrow features great graphics and sound, but it's the squad based game play that shines. You can give your team commands via a simple on screen display and they are really quite handy when it comes to offing bad guys.

If you own an Xbox Live headset, you can actually give commands by talking to your Xbox, but I haven't used one so can't comment on its effectiveness. Nice idea though. Black Arrow features a massive selection of real life weaponry and gadgets that will help you take the baddies down and they include cool infrared vision, night vision, flash grenades, claymores etc. A lot of attention has been spent on the graphics as they are very realistic (as are the shadows) - curtains billow in the wind for example.

Black Arrow is a shoot 'em up at heart, but not in the style of Painkiller or Serious Sam - if you run around shooting, you will be shot within seconds and its game over. It is a very tactical game and requires some forward planning and a softly-softly approach. This is the vital element of the game that may turn some gamers off, but for those who like to line up headshots from behind a desk in a besieged office block, this will be right up your street.
