“Not as great as they seem”

★★★☆☆

written by Yamiletb88 on 21/03/2015

Just bought 1996 hilux surf ssrx. Nothing but problems, over heating constantly. Radiator has been flushed, now requires new rad, pump, thermo. This is low milage vehicle that's been well serviced. Very disappointed, not what you would expect from the best brand of of vehicles in the world.

“Good but cylinder heads are terrible”

★★★☆☆

written by fishnwork on 08/03/2012

Great driving 4wd with lots of room, plenty of power, good paint. Cylinder head is poorly designed and will give expensive problems even when not used for towing or off road. Beware the $3000 repair bills, otherwise ok.

“KZ185- the acid test”

★★★☆☆

written by SupremeConstructor on 02/03/2012

I have owned 4 hilux surfs, A 2.4 EFI, and three with the 1KZ-te motor. The motor could have been the diesel to end all diesels of the era, but built in faults to the head and cooling/capacity have turned a well engineered piece into a nightmare. Treat with the utmost care (servicing) and add an aftermarket AUDIBLE "smart" engine block temp. device or exhaust gas temp device and you will detect this problem before it cracks the head. You can't even leave the radiator cap off (inadvertently) on these engines without risking a cracked head. Not good Toyota! Running gear- excellent.

“Excellent starter. The engine always caught first time...”

★★★☆☆

Excellent starter. The engine always caught first time and if pulled really well. They should be bullet proof and especially good for off-roading. I loved the car - for the 20 hours I got to drive it...

“I bought a Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-G 3.0TD in Australia...”

★★★★☆

written by jeffconway on 30/12/2007

I bought a Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-G 3.0TD in Australia having moved from Scotland .It was bought as a stop-gap between cars until we settled in and I have had it for two years and am still not looking to replace it!

I have kicked its teeth in since I got it I have bogged it in sand carried camping gear and canoes towed trailers with cars on the back. I've overheated it and generally ignored it and how did it pay me back? By keeping on going.

I am not a fan but if I'm honest, its been the most reliable car I've had since a SWB 2.8 TD isuzu trooper .

I just bought a 96 Surf KZN185 3.0 T/D. It has an immobiliser on it and after using it for a day and stop starting 4 or 5 times with no problems it now won't start, won't crank and all warning lights stay on head lights don't dim. Is the immobiliser factory fitted or after market and can it be disconnected? Smashing drive, be a shame to throw it back at the dealer.

Just got a used 1994 Surf. I've yet to find the control for the fender mirror and have looked everywhere - there has to be one though. Also, there is a very odd red button an inch or so forward of the shift lever. Any suggestions as to what it does?

Don't know about the mirror but the red button unlocks the auto gear lever from park when the engine is not running.
