“Personal views on Air Arms S400 carbine Walnut stock”

I have been airgunning for about 30yrs and have over the years owned most most popular makes but have had to change to a PCP in my declining years and have recently purchased an Air Arms S400 carbine. I understand now why so many of my shooting friends use them. Beautifully made with superb finishes on both metal and wood. Accuracy beyond my ability and excellent balance. However the T piece on the Air filler snapped off after 8 fills.and I would be interested if any one else has had this problem....

“Air arms s400F CARBINE .177 review.”

i purchased my s400 carbine today in .177 , and it is the most accurate , good looking and overall best preformer i have ever shot. i mounted a Nikko stirling mount master 4-12x 50 AO and it really complements the rifle , the rifle requires no talent to shoot well it's a natural , its easily capable of producing 10mm size groupings at 40 meters , if set up correctly , this rifle can compete with a £700 rifle , if your going to add a new pcp to your collection make it the s400. and its made in england...

Got my Air Arms S400 classic (Not Carbine) in .177 about 2 weeks ago, since i have put around 200 pellets through it with no problems so far. The gun is lovely, well made and accurate. I fixed a Deben bipod and with the help of that when firing at 40yds the gun easily achieves 10mm spreads with most pellets impacting more or less one on top of the other. Overall it is a great gun which I got for a good price (£389 New) it is slightly fiddly to load but you will get this with any single shot...

“I have owned 2 Air Arms S400 air rifles in 177 . ”

I have owned 2 Air Arms S400 air rifles in 177 . Having spent over 5 years with them shooting I am slightly disappointed. Maybe I was just unlucky as some colleagues have shot outstandingly well with them. Compared to my BSA Tactical T10 , the accuracy of my S400s was not as good as the BSA , tested at 55 yards with a variety of sorted , sized & weighed pellets. These rifles were shot off a bench side by side, to rule out condition changes. Both AA rifles groups were bigger than the BSA....

The Air Arms S400 air rifle is simply superb in every respect. It's build quality is extremely impressive with a slick, precise bolt action coupled up to an insanely accurate LW barrel. The stock on this particular rifle is in walnut and it's exceptional in every regard infact the gun looks so good that to me it was slightly let down by the silvered (alluminium/plastic?) bolt that is fitted as standard. I am really nit-picking about the bolt, it's fine, but the rifle is so good that I fitted a stainless...

The Air Arms s400.177 is more than capable of killing small vermin 'upto the size of rabbits'. ( Head shots only ). I would only move up to a .22 for hunting if you first aquire a F.A.C. I have in the past owned 12lbs .22 and would say that .177 is my prefered calibre at 12lbs.

Bought mine a couple of years ago, would recommend it 100% to anyone. Mine is .177 with walnut stock with a 3-9x50 scope fitted. Looks fantastic and shoots even better! Will hit a 5p piece no trouble from 40yards, I have in fact seen my cousin strike a match from that distance with his .22 S400, no word of a lie!! I look after the the gun and have never had any reliability issues with it. Will easily drop a rabbit from 40 yards and even further with a well taken shot. You will not be disappointed!...

I purchased the gun from J S Ramsbottom (most excellent dealers) and in common with all others the .177 is getting very hard to come by as there has been a bit of a run on all models due to a rumour that the inner workings are going to be reworked to meet proposed new government legislation. I had to settle for the .22 Classic; not that it bothers me because I was torn between the two calibres anyway. A good gun when its firing on all cylinders, but you have to rap it up in cotton wool, which is a pain when out, and you also have to keep your thumb on the bolt whilst walking around so as it does not open, and scare the quarry off when you do get something in your sights. A friend bought the s200 at same time as i bought the s400k, i now wish I'd bought the same gun, its cheaper, just as accurate and there is always the add on option with the s200....

This is my first gun in precharge form and I must say that it is a pleasure to shoot. Got it a week ago from Marsh Tackle in High Wycombe and they gave me a bloody good deal and plenty pf useful advice. It only took about twenty shots to zero in the Hawke varmint II sight (4-16 x 44) which accompanies the gun really well. At 30yds I was getting virtually one hole groups and at 45yds groups the size of 10p (prone), so this gun is extremely accurate and in the right hands will be just as competitive...

i have a walnut tx200 that i practically new and i use it for target shooting i am just wondering if a beach s400 would be a good swap for my tx200?

Terry Luck's response to Terry Luck's Review

Written on: 05/06/2006

hmmm, well i wrote this review and i also own a TX200 HC aswell, which i had before i brought my s400, i didn't sell my TX to get my s400 because well i love the TX just as much, i use my TX for day hunting because i mainly shoot pigeons and it is a .22 so its harder hitting, i use my s400 for target shooting and lamping basically because my lamp can't fit on the scope mounts on my TX but i would use my TX for lamping if i could, in my opinion for target shooting depending on your skill would be the s400 but both will be equally as accurate with dedicated practice but owning both i have become not so accurate with my TX because i use my s400 mostly cos i lamp a lot because of work, so your choice mate and i hope i have helped, think carefully you cannot fault an air-arms TX200.

Snipersnipersniper's response to Terry Luck's Review

Written on: 07/06/2006

My tx200 is putting out a power of 14.182fps with Air Arms 4.52 what power is a s400?
What size mounts do you use with your S400 because i use accushot Medium mounts with my tx and i am just wondering whether i will need higher mounts for my s400 when i get it.
And is the trigger on the s400 the same as the tx200 because i think that the tx200 has a good crisp trigger and after a few small adjustments it one of best triggers i have ever had on a springer.

Terry Luck's response to Terry Luck's Review

Written on: 09/06/2006

i don't work in fps in power steaks i work in ft lbs, my s400 is running at 11.4 ftlbs which is plenty gd enough, just let you know i took my s400 out lamping last night at my shoot with a mate and i got a headshot at a pigeon in a tree at 40yrds so the rifle is plenty accurate enough, as i've probably mentioned i prefer my TX200 HC to my S400 basicaly because i was brought up with springers and it just personel choice. Keeping your TX will not be a mistake, and yes the trigger on the s400 is rubbish compared to my TX it has a lot of side play and i asked at my local club if it was a fault and they said they all are like that even the s410, but with adjustment can be improved but to me i judge the trigger on the factory setting because not many people have the skill required to adjust trigger mechanisms. i don't adjust my triggers, tried it once, it was successful but the process of learning from mistakes was very nerve racking if it is on your favorite air rifle. I use 2 piece high mounts on my s400 but it all really depends on your scopes objective lense for 50mm plus use high mounts definitely because the worst thing is getting your rifle and a couple weeks later your scope and mounts come and you get all excited to shoot your rifle only to find out the mounts are too low and the barrels in the way, plus it leaves enough room from the action to the scope body tube to fit a logun lamp:), if you are into hunting of course. Hope i have helped, anymore questions, please feel free to ask for free honest advice because airgunners help airgunners in my book ;)

Terry Luck's response to Terry Luck's Review

Written on: 09/06/2006

almost forgot, i use high promounts but i think high medium and low mounts of any make are the same for any make, i brought promounts because of all the fuss i've heard of them so i got them and found them no different to their makes of mounts they all have 8 allen key screws for the scope and 4 for the tightening of ther mounts unless they are adjustable mount but i havent used them, so your safe with accushot mounts i have them on my TX.

Terry Luck's response to Terry Luck's Review

Written on: 01/07/2006

Good point mate - I have that problem, no cleaning kits I know of fit the s400 unless you remove the barrel which I don't recommend doing, I just use cleaning pellets, it probably doesn't do such a good job as dedicated kits but its better than nothing. Terry Luck

Snipersnipersniper's response to Terry Luck's Review

I have just bought mine and the barrel needed cleaning out - I used a 20lb fishing line and put a knot on the end and fed it up the barrel. I then cut a small piece of j cloth and sprayed it with a cheap version of wd40, turned the rifle upside down (to stop excess oil from getting into the firing valve and pulled the pull through out of the barrel. The cloth was covered in a thick brown oily substance - I repeated this 8 times until the cloth was clean. I also have some cleaning pellets that I fire through after every shooting session.

Do you have an air arms silencer - if you do they are very quiet, but when I look down mine I can see a baffle in the middle that seams to be misshapen but it hasn't changed the rifles performance. I don't think 12.434ft I am getting with 4.52 diabalo the trigger seams to be a bit creapy but that doesnt bother me.
When you put your hand over the bolt probe can you feel air because I can and mine is a new rifle and I have looked at the seals and they don't look worn?

I'm glad you took my advice and bought the rifle, i wouldn't really recommend using WD40 or any non dedicated barrel lube oil because it could corrode the seals, my mate used wd40 to clean his rifle every time he used it (s200) and when he got it out after a ln period of time the air resevoir started to leak at around 150 bar pressure, but i don't know whether it was anything to do with the WD40, as for the leak in the bolt probe i havent really noticed anything from mine but i don't think it would be much to worry about if all the seals are intact. Did you say the rifle was brand new?
My advice is do what i do, if you have any worries about your rifle and you think it is not right, dont try to strip it yourself, i pay the extra pound to get it done by a well known reputable gunsmith, i will look into the leak on the bolt probe for you but at the moment i am repairing the stock and servicing the rifle, sorry for the inconvenience and i know how you feel about your rifle, p.s invest in a bisley air rifle leaning kit, i have one for my shotgun and they are very good pieces of kit and cost around £30.

hi thanks for the advise on the wd40 i am not going to use it again i have had a chat with a gunsmith and he says that he never cleans the barrel out on rifles and he is taking the barrel of to replace the loading bolt buffer because that is where the air was leaking from.
ps. the air pressure gauge is funny i fill the rifle to 190bar using the reading on the bottle and then look at the rifle and it reads 140bar

Terry Luck's response to Terry Luck's Review

Written on: 06/07/2006

nice to see you have sorted your problem mate, i have heard that the reading from the pressure gauge on the filling equiptment i.e pump, that they can be slighty off, when filling pressure is concerned i always fill mine to 170 bar, because i find it performs better, also you haven't got to worry about over filling it too. I always use napier pellet lube in my pellets and that helps to clean the barrel as well and i have had it for nearly 5 months now and it is still very accurate. Just a bit of advice when you buy a new rifle is to remove the stock just by unscrewing the large allen key screw and wiping a nice splodge of bisley gun oil on a cloth onto the underside of the rifle, because once i have took a rifle out in the wet, dryes and wiped over the metalwork with oily rag and then go to take the stock off at a later date and find water has crept into the gaps between the stock and caused the underside to rust, luckily it was only a cheap old gun but still consider this. hope i helped Terry Luck

Snipersnipersniper's response to Terry Luck's Review

Written on: 06/07/2006

Thanks for the advise with the oil under the stock, i think that it's a good way to stop the air cylinder rusting away. i have had that problem before. i once had a webley fx200 and the air cylinder had a layer of rust on it, Do you find the trigger a bit creepy on your s400 because i do. i also can feel a lot of sidways moverment? do you have the new model with the saftey catch in the trigger?
what group can you get at 100ft? i can get practically one hole groups occasionally i get a flier that is about 1cm from my point of aim. i am not sure why this happens i think it may be something to do with me cleaning the barrel out with a j cloth or a baffle in the silencer seems to be abit off center.

Terry Luck's response to Terry Luck's Review

Written on: 11/07/2006

hi, i am not sure what groups i get at 100 yards, i do little target shooting now because of the big increase of rabbits at my shoot, all im sure of is it kills them clean at 30-40 yards, yeah the triggers are creepy on the s400, nothing to worry about there its all fine, mine has the safety on the trigger too, and it also has sideways movement, and every one i have asked about that say theirs are the same, i have been told that it can be sorted by adjusting the trigger but i advise you to do what i do, leave it well alone i keep away from triggers too risky to do without experience, dont worry about the fliers on you shooting i always have them when i used to do target shooting and so does everyone i know, maybe its a slighty higher or lowered powered blast of air or maybe just a mistake by the shooter which went un-noticed hope i helped.

This is my fourtenth Air Arms rifle and probably my last with the scope cross hairs centralised it shoots 4 inches to the right 3 sets of mounts 3 different scopes all 4 inches to the right( the barrel is straight and in line) could be scope grooves not in line. Then the safety button fell out! I had noticed something catching when I pulled the trigger there is that much side ways movement in the trigger ,the block on the trigger blade (safe in) is catching under the trigger guard it feels like...

P.S, I had noticed some small marks on the end of the silencer, so I have drilled the very end one mill larger, RESULT although I had removed the silencer when I first had the gun it did not seem to make much difference, but enlarging the hole in the silencer has made a tremendous difference it now shoots straight and true. NOTE, I have spoken to eight people who have bought a S400 none of them have had the problems I have had but two of them have complained about sideways movement in the trigger, ANT.

Im sorry to hear about the lack of quality on you're s400. With the huge popularity in air arms pcp's these days maybe it's a case of build em and ship em and quick! but that's no excuse for poor quality at the end of the day they cost just over £300. Read my review on the tx200 I had a few problems it. I would say half inch groups at 30 yards is a bit to wide, my gun can achieve quatre inch at 40 - 45 yards but I use a different pellet to you I use air-arms field maybe you should give them a try.
p.s thought about converting to a s210 but couldn't part with s400 workhorse in the end.

THANKS FOR YOUR comments Springer since my review I have had a brass trigger blade fitted it must be a bit wider as it has not got as much side ways movement, also I have recently met 4 shooters with newish s400s there complaints are side ways movement in trigger poor grouping some pellets clipping silencer, note AA4.52 worse.

The new s400s have redesigned chequering and a dust cap fitted to the filling valve also the quick snap valve supplied is of a new shape so it doesn't scratch the silencer when filling. Essentially still the same gun though the internals remain the same personaly I prefer the chequering on the originals. I am going to get some brass parts for my 400 as well thay add a bit of class.

What would be a good alternative. The price range is good and the shrouded barell is a must.

Although my gun sounds a tale of woe I have sorted all the probs, quality control seems suspect, a mate who bought a walnut 400, showed his prob, the trigger guard on his has no gap to the stock one side and a big one the other, my advice go to a shop near you and check one out with a fine tooth comb if you buy you can take it back if you find probs. Hi, I had a S400k .177 earlier this year, since then I have fitted a AA silencer, tawnado stock, a Theoben trigger shoe, wide sling and Harris bipod. I like the gun in a great way I use it for long range hunting on my legal limit land, very accurate very well ballanced, I find AA diablo pellets to be the most accurate by far but use Bisley Magnum due to them being a heavier pellet and I mainly hunt. The one main thing I have to fault on the gun is the trigger and unfortunately most of us find thats what makes a gun. For starters when I first had the gun the handbook on the trigger and trying to set it up was as if AA had tried to get a little a head of themselves with too many adjustments. Although my main fault is the first stage of the 2 stage trigger, on my gun I find after adjusting to the best I can get it when I pull the first stage if for some reason I release the trigger it then has freeplay in it as if something internally in the mechanism is sticking. But if the gun is not cocked the trigger is loose as if the system charges then holds it before its first stage. Is anyone elses gun like this or have they seem similar problems.

I have owned my Air Arms S400 .177 carbine for about 8 weeks, and have put about 2,500 pellets through it, with NOT A PROBLEM so far. My Air Arms S400 has an AGS 4x16x56 swat scope bolted on, and where ever I want the pellet to land, it does so. Like your views about the S400. I've got to say that the built-in gauge is comical, but mine reads the opposite to yours. Fill it to 190 bar and it reads over 200... All very pointless. Are you using the classic or the carbine? I would be interested to know your shots per charge, and the shot to shot consistency. I have also bashed my silencer with the filling adaptor a few times. I'm ultra cautious these days.

How do you clean your barrel out and what with.

Rollod's response to springer's Review

Written on: 13/07/2006

I'd change a TX for an S400 in an instant... Going to precharged really is a quantum leap in airgunning. The reduced recoil and speed of second shot is exceptional when hunting. The quality of the S400 barrel and firing cycle will give you that "competition expert" feeling without much effort at all on the range. If you're good with a springer, you'll feel like a pro with a pre-charged... All the good shooting lessons learned with the springer, pay huge dividends.
>I clean and lube my pellets (AA Diablo 5.51mm) and this keeps the barrel in very good nick. I clean it about every 2000 rounds using a cloth pad soaked in white spirit pulled through the barrel about 4 times by a strong fishing line. I then pull several clean wipes through followed by a pad soaked in a good quality oil. I use the stuff I use on my pellets, Mobil 1... (Works for my car cylinders... )
Good shooting.

Four months on, I have found that the best pellets for my rifle are the JSB Exacts 4.51. Ten shots at 35 yards all in a group that could be covered by a one pence piece. Have put it through a chrono and it is running at 11.9 foot-pounds. Have changed my scope to an Airmax 6 to 18 by 44. The best pressure to charge to I have found is 170 bar, with 100 + shots. More than enough for any competition or days hunting. I haven’t had one single problem with it so far (touch wood) very pleased and still think for the money you can’t do better.
I have put an air stripper/muzzle flip compensater on and it has shrunk the group sizes down to about 15 mm at 50 yards. Well worth it if you are shooting HFT.
