First I would like to say Thompson and Island cruises have no right to call the boat a cruise ship. It is a converted car ferry and needs to be scrapped. We were on there on the 21st May for a weeks cruise and a week stay. When we left Palma we had rough seas that night and all the next day, the sick bags were out and being used a lot. That Friday evening 24th May is one I will never forgot. The Captain should never have left port that night we were in a force 12 gale and the seas were... (read more)

I was travelling with 3 other people, from Palma on the 21st May for a week. started off bad and didn't get any better. There is many negative things I can/could say about the boat but that was all over shadowed with the boat listing to a frightening degree on the Friday 24th. I was in the bounty lounge on my own when this happened, and my husband was in his cabin sleeping. I can honestly say I didn't think I was going to see him again. I was also travelling with my mother and mother in-law... (read more)

We boarded the ship after you and it was horrendous, quarantined for 24hours due to norovirus after coming out of quarantine was thrown up on in the dining room by another passenger who had the virus .the dining room was not cleaned properly after... I have read reviews about the ship on the 24th May tilting to the side. I was also on this ship at that time and it was not as bad as what is being said. YES the boat TILTED but what would people rather. The captain steering the boat making it tilt or would people rather the boat smashing in to rocks. I agree the weather was not very good that night but other boats had previously left the port just because ours so clearly there was nothing to worry about. The all inclusive was good enough,... On the 25th May I was 65, on the 24th May I thought I was not going to see it. We were sitting in the restaurant on deck 10 when the ship rocked slightly and then suddenly veered over, to see the sea rushing up towards us on one side and objects and people falling towards us was very frightening, my wife and my young sister were thrown against the windows both suffering slight bruising. The restaurant crew looked to be in shock with one officer saying he could not believe it, every thing... (read more)

Hi I was also travelling with the island escape with my family had I am not really upset and disturbed by what happened and how we where treated.
Myself and family actually left the cruise the following day as did not feel safe or reassured.
I am so glad I have read this review and seeing someone shares the same views.
I have contacted Thomsons and was surprised at their lack of empathy. I also wasn't asked about what had happened or our personal experience which I feel is just their way of avoiding what happened.
would you be willing to swap details to see if there is something we can maybe do as a joint effort?

6 of us were also on this trip, and fortunately all seated in the restaurant. We were shielded by a cupboard from most of the flying glass and crockery, but heard lots of horror stories, including that a waiter had broken an arm whilst holding up a tray. Others around had been cut by glass. We had no idea that we had the opportunity of leaving the ship, unless injured. How did people actually get home - did Thomsons help out?
Also again we were not informed re Norovirus, only wondered at way food was served, and noticed no salt/pepper containers on tables - just little sachets. 2 of us were taken ill after returning home though! Nice.
I think the ship should be retired as a cruise ship, the noise of banging and creaking at night was terrible, it sounded as though it was falling to bits.
Does anyone know if there was any official enquiry re incident at Citevecchia, and what the outcome was?
I would cruise again, but never on that ship. The best thing about it were the staff.

THOMPSON ISLAND ESCAPE We totally agree with everything that has already been said. On Friday 24th May we honestly felt we were going to die!! The captain took a ridiculous decision to leave the port knowing full well it was far too dangerous to do so!!! Hence nearly turning the ship over. We were in the dinning room when it happened and every plate, glass wine bottle smashed everywhere. We left the restaurant to find people being carried out, helped out and wheeled out in wheelchairs.... (read more)

The first few days were good and we enjoyed the entertainment. But on Friday 24th due to bad weather the wind blew the Italian pilot ships which were taking us out of the port of course the captain had to do a sharp turn which caused tables to be upturned pianos to go crashing across the lounge. It was terrifying only those on board will ever know just how frightening it was ..that night the ship should never have left port ..what excuse would have been used if we had gone right over ( only a slight margin to go !) and we should have been informed earlier about the Noro virus..I believe it was on the ship when we embarked on 21st ..but we're only informed on Sun 26th th that fumigation was going to take place on 28 th in Palma !!

My husband and agree completely, we were with a party of 12 two of whom were tipped off their chairs during the listing of the ship. One of the worst things was that no announcement was made for about 30 mins so no one knew what was had happened. No apology was given even then and nothing said in the newspaper that was given out that night.
My husband was also meticulous about hand hygiene but he still contracted Norovirus and we were both confined to the cabin thus missing Barcelona as well. Certainly would not like to do this type of cruise again. We have cruised with P&O previously and that was fantastic.
Written on: 04/06/2013
I have been advised to see a lawyer. So many things happened the ship turning so sharply causing many including me to be badly bruised then to contract the Noro virus . Thomson need to be brought to book for causing so much stress to so many.
Written on: 04/06/2013
I was also on the ship travelling with my family, one of who as cruised many times.
That was the most terrifying experience of my life!!! and when I seen a review on here earlier saying "not as bad as being made out" I was so angry.
I can only imagine it is someone who works on the ship or the "captain" himself who had written that, as I cant believe someone would be so un-sympathetic or condescending to write that when people are clearly upset.
I have contacted Thomson since leaving the ship early and it was utterly disgraceful they way the have communicated with us.
they still after 5 phone calls haven't asked what had happened or how we are dealing with things now. To which I can only think their reason for this is if they don't ask they don't need to accept responsibility!!
the only good thing I can say is LUCKILY none of us had or have taken ill with the novo virus.
I would be more than happy though to swap details with anyone in relation to the listing of the boat to see if something more can be done.
we have been told that for anyone who had left the boat early they will be offered the remain of their holiday back, pro rota, oh and a £100 voucher for thomsons!!
Written on: 05/06/2013
I too think the person who says it wasn't so bad was one of the staff, either that or they were on a different ship!!!

I would love to know if there was an official enquiry and if not why not. Surely with all the radar equipment that the captain had at his disposal he would have realised we were getting to near the rocks and guided the ship away safely and not turned sharp as he did. Was he looking at his equipment. I just cannot accept that turning so quickly was his only way of dealing with this very scary incident..

This was our first cruise and a major reason for us booking this was that it included a visit to the Island of Corsica, which would be a chance to see somewhere not often available on other Med.cruises . This is the second time in two years have been on this ship. Was told two years ago cabins would be updated, but they are just as bad and now need a complete refit. The food was always nice, the entertainment good and all the staff so polite, pleasant and always attentive. We have been on other cruises which are more upmarket but so is the price you pay. Make sure you do your homework before you go so you are not in for a shock to find the Island Escape probably the smallest and oldest ship in every port you go to. When we came home from our cruise a friend of mine said that Watchdog on bbc had lots of reports of the cruise ship being dirty and smelly well i was on that ship and no way was it dirty and smelly we thaught it was great, it did need a bit of paint but it has now gone to be refurbished. From the captain down to you cabin cleaner every thig was good all were friendly and anything you wanted all you had to do was ask.If all people have to do is moan about little things which we never... This was our first cruise and we were not dissapointed the ship has had some bad reviews and we were a bit worried as to what we would find, but our fears were blown out of the water(haha) We were on deck 9 it was perfect the room size was good, room to move about the bathroom a bit old but in good working order. The ship maybe a bit old but it was very clean, all day and night long staff were cleaning and hand gel was all over the ship for all to use, our kabin steward akash was brill he... It's the first time we have been on a cruise all the staff were friendly and helpful nothing was to much trouble. The excursions are a little over priced but all the tour guides knew everything and anything for the given tour. The service on the ship was fantastic start to finish, the food was plenty all day & night.
Two negative points, #1. The pool water had the smell of diesel which makes me think it's dragged up from the sea bottom when the ship docks, although the day out on the Corsican...

I have just came back today from this cruise I also did the 15pnd train ride to the vatican and had a very enjoyable day.I found paying 80pnd for this trip would have been a wasteof hard earned cash,And we had an amazing two week holiday.

Myself and my Fiance have just returned from a weeks holiday on the Island Escape. I am absolutely amazed that this so called Ship has got any good reviews. Its an absolute joke.
Ill start with the good points because there are only a few: firstly the stops were good as long as your able to use a train as the excursions are an absolute rip off (ill get to that in a bit). Secondly the waiting staff are good and attentive.
Now for the negatives using the tender boats is a complete joke...

I found this review very helpful because... I like to read the good and the bad.the bit were people turn up for dinner in vests has really put me off i am looking for a casual holiday well 4 of us but we dont want a camp site holiday.also we didnt like how the people were treated about getting out at 8am in a morning thats a bit much manners maketh the crew the lady didnt sound like she followed the norm.

We were on this ship last November for the Colourful coasts cruise
<br/>I totally agree the staff are not helpful even the other passengers were not that friendly, on disembarking the staff would have had us coming off the ship 20 minutes after our plane took off and they were adamant and quite rude about the timings. Was not keen on dining room and preferred to go the the restaurant and paid the supplement every night although this was costly, and other ships do not charge for this If this had been my first cruise it would have put me off but luckily it was out 5th. We have just come off the Destiny and the difference was just No comparison! would recommend this to anyone but Never again on Island Escape.

This was a fantastic cruise. I honestly dont know what all the negative attitudes are about. Yes the ship is is need of a little refurbishment, nut it is due to go in for this during the winter. The staff and crew go above and beyond the call of duty to look after and please all guests. The cabins are kept immaculately clean by the cabin stewards. A special mention to Nelish here, He was fantastic, making a little towel sculpture each morning as a surprise to return to the cabin and find.... (read more)

Staff are brillant they make this knackered boat come alive the entertainment was dreadfull like a saturday nite at sarga holiday camp.Food was ok ,service was spot on .Toilets were limited and were hanging in parts but clean and only a few on certain floors so you had to be quick to find them.As we were on 3rd floor the noise from the engine and prop was a constant rumble the smell of hydralic oils coming from the lifts were a serious worry. As this was our first cruise i would ADVICE you... (read more)

High season cruising can be expensive but if you are prepared to compromise a little on the luxury other big brand ships offer, you need not miss out on good quality food, reasonable entertainment, perfectly acceptable accommodation and still visit exciting ports and local destinations that the other cruise ships go to.
This sums up Island Cruises and their only ship the Island Escape. Whilst the ship is certainly dated and goes in for a re-fit at the end of this year, the food on offer is...

Just returned from 7 nights aboard Island Cruise, was very dubious after reading some dreadful reviews, This ship was absolutely brilliant we could not fault anything, the food was very good, plenty of variety, the staff excellent, very helpful and friendly, they could not do enough for you. The entertainment was first class. Our cabin was kept spotless by our Cabin Boy Daneish. (read more)

We were dubious about this cruise after reading alot of the negative reviews, but we were going on a family holiday there were 16 of us, so we booked it with an open mind. You get what you pay for, the ship does require a reburb, but its very clean, the food is excellent, so is the entertainment, the cabins are small and require re-modernisation, but on a cruise you dont spend your time in your cabin other than to sleep and refresh? The restuarant and lounge areas are comfortable enough... (read more)

We have just returned from a 14 day holiday on the Island Escape, This is our 2nd cruise on this ship our last was in May 2008, so we knew what it was like. We have had two great cruises. We could not fault anything from arrival to departure. Our cabin steward Nelish couldn't do enough to look after us and our cabin was kept clean and tidy, as he came in at least twice every day to make sure everything was ok. The entertainment every night was top class and varied. The food as usual... (read more)

just returned from 7 days on the Island Escape, 2nd time was on the ship in Sept 2009, so we knew what it was like. We had a great cruise in Sept, could not fault anything, know it needs an upgrade but every aspect of the cruise outshone that. This time however the food was not as good, everything was only warm, not hot like we like it, the quality of food was not as good, vegetables and potatoes were hard and very undercooked. However the holiday was still great the whole crew make everyone... after reading some of the reviews I began to worry! We had booked before we read them. Now I have been and seen for myself. Was I on the same ship as these people had been on, if so what do they want. Ship was old yes, no denying that, but it was immaculate. Hand hygene sprays at every doorway. cleaners cleaning toilets in public places all day long. Bedrooms (cabins) cleaned and tidied twice a day, clean towels and bed linen every day, food was good quality and plenty of variety in both... (read more)

I returned yesterday from my second cruise on the Island Escape with my friend.I had read all the negative reviews but having travelled previously in 2008 I did not pay too much attention. We booked at the last minute, travelled from our local airport (Doncaster) and got an outside cabin on Deck 7 and we felt we got a bargain.
Yes, the ship is old and desperately needs some refurbishment particularly in the cabins but we didn't spend much time in there. The crew are amazingly hard working...

Just returned from a 1 week cruise on the Island Escape . I was on this cruise ship in 2002 and really enjoyed it, this time however it was not so good. The main problem was the food every meal was served luke warm and not very tasty. The staff were really friendly, couldn't do enough for you, the entertainment however was like something you would find in an old peoples home they didn't think about the younger people on board. There is talk of the ship going in for a refit in the Autumn and... (read more)

I was on this cruise with my friend and it was a nightmare when the captain made that sharp turn and the boat listed I was thrown about my cabin on deck 6. I have severe arthritis and the way I was thrown exacerbated my condition. To make matters worse . I contracted the Noro Virus and was confined to my cabin with my friend. I will be speaking to a lawyer about what happened.I also think we should stick together so I am giving you my email address andrinathomson@sky.com and you have my permission to use my name. I will let you all know how I get on with my lawyer. Good luck

This was our 1st ever cruise .
Nobody can control the weather but the decision to set sail in such appaling weather was questionable indeed . The only reason i can think off was it was purely economical not wanting to pay berthing fees for the night.
My wife and i were in the Ocean Theatre went the "incident " occured.
There were tables ,chairs and people thrown all over the place , one actually landed on my wife. I too believe the initial response was lacking in urgency. My email is njc2012@me.com for anyone wishing to carry the fight towards Thompson's

I think Thomson have admitted fault by offering us £100 off our next holiday, if they are innocent why offer money back, I think there should be a full inquiry, and am I right in saying another captain replaced the one on the ship at the end of this cruise
