Good Points: The hotel staff were helpful and solved a minor difficulty of ours involving an electronic key where the battery in our door had broken. it was solved quickly and easily. Edinburgh was a lively and brilliant city. We had a great time.
Bad Points: The restaurant in the hotel, a Slice restaurant, was poorly staffed. We may have arrived on a bad night, but on our first night, we decided to eat in the restaurant. We did not order starters, and so went straight onto main courses. We ahd to wait an incredible one and a half hours for our meals to arrive. After the stress of flying and then arriving at our hotel with the key difficulties, we would have liked to have sat down to a quick meal. We were eventually served our meals, and were offered each a free drink and dessert, but this was not sufficient and so we complained to Travel inn, who promptly sent us a sum of Whitbread vouchers, which is enough to satisfy us. Edinburgh itself had no faults in our opinion.
General comments: (2002)Edinburgh Airport is an easily accessible building, with enough facilities and an easy route through arrivals. We found a taxi rank quite easily and were escorted to our hotel for a reasonable price.
When we arrived at the hotel, we found the place to be warm and welcoming. Our check-in was swift and we could get to our rooms quickly and with little stress. A small problem with the electronic key was soon sorted out by the Travel Inn staff who were very helpful.
We soon went into Edinburgh city centre and found a bustling, yet friendly place. It is well signposted and we found the major attractions quickly like the old Town, the lively Princes Street, and the famous Edinburgh Castle. Near Edinburgh Castle are two excellent interactive museums- Camera Obscura and the Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre- entry fees are reasonable and definitely worth it.
The Old town is breathtaking with all of the Georgian houses and quaint shops. We found our family crest in a small shop in the Old Town- there are many.
We found many excellent cafes and restaurants- a favourite of ours being a small cafe down at the base of a church- the name of which escapes me. This is excellent and provides many cakes and buns, sandwiches and three flavours of hot soup, not to mention the many types of tea and coffee.
Overall, Edinburgh was a wonderful place. i hope to return there some time, and would recommend it to any of you who ae reading this review.
