I had an alex 103 new in the 1980s and loved it. I chose this horn because my teacher at the time (Adrian Leiper)recommended them so much. I have heard and seen several comments about the variability from one instrument to another, but I haven't tried enough alexander horns to comment myself, although I have recently bought a vintage 103 reckoned to be from the 1960s, and despite being quite tatty when I got it, it plays wonderfully, even better than the 1980's one. The Alexander 103 is a wonderful horn, I have played since 1970 as a student and professional. I owned eight different horns at one time and I always have kept my Alexander 103 since it is the superior horn. It is the only horn I use and will never need another horn. (read more)

I moved up to the Alexander 103 from the Paxman Studenti, and the sound is so much fuller on the Alexander 103. A great horn all round, and is so beautiful. However, a lot of Alexander horns loose there lacquer easily, sadly mines does too. My Alexander has lasted a life time, a sterdy and very well built horn. It has a definate sound of a true French Horn. (read more)

My Alexander 103 has played wonderfully for years. I have had it since 1970 and has never needed any major work done to it. Great orchestra horn and has the true sound of a French Horn. (read more)
