Good Points: Compact with excellent buttons. Mine still works after more than 8 years of heavy use and regular abuse.

Bad Points: Only for calls and SMS. When the phone is closed and a call is received the caller ID can't be seen.

General comments: I have had my Motorola V50 since 1999. It still works perfectly despite having had constant use, very heavy for three years, got very wet lots of times including salt water, was left in a forest for a month, used as a toy by children for a week (they scraped all the finish off the case inside and out and drew all over it in permanent marker) and subjected to a lot of impacts including falling off bridges and out of trees. For over a year it was used as a voice recorder during research in rainforests. It must have travelled over quarter of a million miles in total. When I first got it my girlfriend was dubious and said it would break within months. The opening mechanism does feel a bit flimsy, but mine must have been flicked open tens of thousands of times and it's still intact. Amazingly the screen is hardly scratched at all and the battery will still hold power for a day or an hour of calling. I now keep a foreign sim card in it and it is mainly used for texting, but it still functions perfectly. I've subsequently had variants on the V50 clamshell design up to the V3 Razr and they have inevitably disappointed me (terrible cameras, awkward buttons) and eventually failed me (usually display failures following impacts). The V50 is incredibly light and compact, much more so than any of its successors and consequently it's easy to loose. The V50 is easily the best phone I have ever had, but obviously they weren't all made to the same standard!!

I wish I had never bought a Motorola V50 mobile phone!

If your dad offers you his old one from 1998 for free as a favour, do YOURSELF a favour and tell him, sometimes, you HAVE TO SPEND MONEY, and this is one of those times.

This Motorola V50 has got to be the worst phone i have ever bought! firstly, it takes ages to actually get to the message icon and then when you do, it takes about half an hour just to write a message!! My messages always sent to someone else in my inbox (not to who I wanted to send it to), and plus it doesnt show the person's name in the message inbox.

My phone broke after 2months anyway and i was thankful to get my Nokia back!!

3 weeks after purchasing my Motorola V50 the phone simply went dead. It took it for repairs and the logic IC had blown - fair enough. 2 months later whenever I phoned someone they could not hear me - broken microphone. Writing a text message is such a marathon, it is easier to phone the person. Be sure to have the user manual handy at all times as navigating through the menu is a nightmare. Someones I would not get reception for a few hours at a time. Oh yes dont expect anything special in terms ...

I got this phone 1 and a half years ago and I recently upgraded to a T720i. At first the bettery life was alright but eventually it wore down so much that I was charging it every day. I think that the guy who says that he must just be the unlucky ones is actually the lucky one. I know people who've owned this phone and they agree about the battery life. It's nice and small and pretty good looking. However, the ring tones sound awful. I reverted to just keeping it on vibrate so that I didn't have ...

I love this little phone. I had a V50 for a year that was unfortunately stolen, got a clumsy, heavy Nokia to replace it that I couldn't stand, then upgraded to a V50 again. It's a great phone if you don't need a color screen (be honest, who does?) and can live without backing up your address book to a PC.

I had a V3690 and my close friend has a V50. I suffered and she suffers. Great in the beginning. They fit into anything (suit pocket, clutch bag) and have great features. Yet they eventually will not even work in a moving car and the sound from a caller breaks up and they can barely hear you speak - I was horrified after placing my nokia on a greenly pastured retirement to purchase the motorola - eventually I had to get rid of it out of sheer frustration and went back to the good old faithfu ...

The motorola v50 is the best phone I have ever had, it's small, light and very very sexy! It has everything that I need! When you drop it it doesn't shatter into 1000 pieces, so thats a good sign. All in all a 10/10 phone!

I've had a V50 for two years. Very good looking, lightweight and that's about it. Terrible for writing messages, terrible ringtones, very user unfriendly menu. You can't type more than three words when looking up a name. It doesn't even save names by alphabetical order! Excellent voice dialling and voice recording

I've never liked Motorolas, let's be honest about it. The only reason I've gone for this is because it was free and it was on a tariff that I liked. I should've spent that extra 50 quid on a Nokia now that I've thought about it.
My main complaint is how basic and crude the software is. Compared to Nokias, the Motorola user interface is like in the stone age. It's also extremely unintuitive, it has too many layers to access the very basic of functions and you need to press too many buttons (ie: ...

My first mobile was a Motorola (in 1988) - OK so I'm old. I've had Nokias, Ericcsons - allsorts. Most of them have been OK. The Motorola V50's biggest plus point is its size - fits in a shirt pocket. Its weakest point is its screen which is small and difficult to see in some lights. It's perhaps not packed with features - but what do you want a phone for? For making phone calls and sending text messages it just gets the job done.

I have had my Motorola V50 mobile phone for 1.5 years now and the only problem I have had was a broking light inside the display, that's it. It has a lot of special functions, more then you probably need. The only thing I really miss is the ability to download extra ringtones because the standard ringtones on this phone suck, so you have to program them by hand which is pretty boring and irritating. Lots of people are complaining that it's prone to breaking. I have dropped this phone A LOT of ti ...

I think the Motorola V50 is a good mobile phone to have around. It isn't to big to carry in your pocket. It's different from most phones and stands out. It's a very smart phone and is easy to operate.
