Got this Volkswagen Polo 1.4 16V as my first car, having been a named driver on other cars for a few weeks. I have driven a fair few cars in a similar class to this, and this polo absolutely wipes the lot. Handles fantastically well, barely and body roll without lowering, pulls insanely well for a 1.4, however its not some miracle car so anything over 1.6 will kick it. I had heard gearboxes and eleccy windows went on these, and day after i bought it the drivers window stopped working, and a day later the gearbox started groaning. I read up on the problem and it seemed sorting the 'box early was the best option as the cost goes right up the longer you leave it, recon boxes are pricey on these so youre looking at a £4-500 quid rebuild. A recon box can set you back £500 for the part alone!

Overall a fantastic car, everything you could possibly want out of a basic 'warm' hatch, easily the best sporty car a 17 year old male can get insured on. Just watch the gearbox as the more powerful twin cam engine and the fact many of these cars have been driven 'enthusiastically' can wreak havoc with it. And your wallet.

The Volkswagen Polo 1.4 16V the best buy i've done for a long time! it has 100cv\74kw that grants you travel normally, it doesn't consume too much ... 6,5\7 l all depends if you drive it on high revs or in low revs... I recomend it 100%.

I won't be buying another. So many extras but VW forgot about basics.
No light for the glove box and also not for the boot. How does a Mum get shopping out of the boot in the dark without a light.

Absolute rapid car. Managed to swap the twin cams on a busted up 16v with my 8v (+40bhp). since im a speed maniac iv just put on a new super charger(+30bhp), new mod chip (25bhp) and last but not least... a new Cat Back Exhaust System By Remus (+20bhp). That ' s a whopping 175bhp! And 0 to 60 in about 5.28 secs. And the funniest thing is ITS ONLY INSURANCE GROUP 5! Anyway iv raced almost every single person in my area and the results were obvious... They left behind.
The car is realy good but yo ...

I have a mk3 with 80,000 miles on the clock, I take it to track days and with its stripped interior and minor performance modifications, (exhaust system, induction kit, ecu upgrade) its an absolute weapon, mine currently stands at 117bhp and 0-60 comes in at 8 seconds dead! There is nothing more fun than leaving those insanely kitted up corsa's and clio's at the lights in my humble 1.4!!!

I would not only recommend this to a track day enthusiast or a first time driver, but i would even reco ...

I would certainly recommend this car to others. Especially seeing as they seem to be holding their value now... honestly can't believe its a 10 yr old car. This was the first VW I've owned and I'm know thinking of upgrading to a larger VW...Passat or Golf.

Very good performance from the 100bhp Volkswagen Polo 1.4 16V. Wipes the door with Saxo VTRs and Zetec S's. 0-60 I timed to be less than 10sec. Great build quality with everything feeling solid. To this time holding is value very well. After 10 months and an extra 15000 miles on the clock still at what it was when I bought it if not more. Brakes, gearbox also good.

Mines in dark green and looks great. Alloys, smoked rear lights, front fogs and clear front and side indicators give that extra s ...

I have owned a VW POLO 1.4 16V (twin cam) for a year now and have had lot's of fun driving it. The performance from the 100 BHP engine is outstanding and leaves many bigger engine cars (1.8, 2.0l Vectra's) for dust. A very nippy car for around town!!!!!

Not a car to get passionate about but it does the job perfectly well. If you want value for money go for a Seat or Skoda and definitely don't go near a VW dealership - their astonishing prices combined with even more astonishing incompetence can only be described as soul destroying.

Some one said it crunches when you go into reverse but if you slip it into secound before reverse it doesnt crunch, just a helpful hint. I'm only 17 and it is my first car, insurance hurt me and wasnt fun but is more than worth it as you can beat most people who have been driving years. I love the car, I have a black 16v polo and all i can say is it is the nuts. danny d

Between 40-60k miles and only 4-5 years old I have had to replace the Volkswagen Polo base engine, exhaust, cat converter, pedal box, steering ring, airbag sensor, abs sensors, oh and the mirror case was cracked. All this after it passed Pulman VW, Durham's multi-point inspection.

The Volkswagen Polo is a good little runner but does not take well the mileage. Handles well, enough power for the weight to shame much bigger cars at the lights, easy to park.

    GOODAY,
I have had my Polo now for a couple of years and I'm extremely happy with it. It's a MKIV 5dr 1.4 16V black year 99. The car comes with most of the extras such as dual air bags, power steering, abs, 100bhp and a 16V look ....
The only niggles really are the electric window mechs and the stupid plastic used on the slides. BEST TIP I GOT IS TO GLUE THE CLIPS WHEN YOU GOT THE CHANGE - SPREAD ADHESIVE ON ALL THE STRESS POINTS (ON THE R/ANGLE HOOKS AND THE CABLE NUT HOLDER). Cost of new is ...

Having researched a number of small cars, the Polo stood out from almost all of them in terms of build quality, refinement of drive and overall value for money. As far as I can figure out, the 1.4 litre Twist (auto) model chosen is actually a Polo E with some added features such as metallic paint, air conditioning and alloy wheels. You also get decent safety kit such as 4 airbags and ABS brakes.

The car drives like a much larger model, and I found the good ride, power steering, cornering and ...

I've got a Volkswagen Polo 1.4 16V, mk3, L reg golf. Nice piece of work - no real complaints. No mods, and its the most basic golf in the range - BUT it has been known to take out the odd escort, corsa, civic and even a mazda coupe of some sort or the other.

Anyways to the point. If you experience crunching noises when going into reverse (if your gearbox is like mine) - shift it into 1st gear first, then reverse. This works for me - no more crunch!

Hopefully a bit of good news to all that have an emissions warning light fault on there VW Polo's. My Volkswagen Polo 1.4 16V was in the garrage for 6 weeks but i think it's been solved it turns out that two wires to the ECU were in the wrong place! Yeah you heard right, 6 weeks of frustration for two wires!!! Lucky enough I've not paid them a penny yet or i would not have got any of the money back for the many incorrect investigations and obviously crack pot, don't even know what your doing job ...

    I am 22 and have recently bought a VW Polo 1.4 16V on a P reg.

I love eveything about this car, from its speed to its looks. Without breaking the bank for insurance on a GTI this is the nippiest motor around and the engine just keeps on pulling.

Before this I had a XR3i convertible, which in comparison was absolute rubbish. It wasn't slow, but every time I time I floored it, I start wincing at the sound by the time it reached 5000 revs. The Polo justs pulls and pulls all the way up to 65 ...

I thought when I got a year old polo for my 17th birthday, I was in heaven. The car was gorgeous but evrything is breaking.
It doesn't go into reverse without crunching, the lights on the dashboard are always comoing on even when things aren't broken such as the exhaust. The worst however was driving down to cornwall when my gearbox and clutch went, at 18 months old - I was screwing! Oh and the brake discs have had to be replaced.
I since had a Mk3 Golf and the wheel flew off as I was driving ...
