The C5 SX 2.2 HDi was bought new in 2001. It has had 4 major problems in 7 years/50k miles.
    - New, it was back and forth for 6 months to resolve wheel wobble/steering problems
    - At 25k miles/2 1/2 yeras it needed a new sub-frame and rear tyres due to the sub frame being exensively out of spec (under warranty) cost would have been £7-800.
    - 30k miles/3 1/2 years high pressure fuel pump failed - £1000 repair -"quite common" on the HDI 2.2 engine was Citroen Dealer's comment. Citroen refused to consider any ex-gratia payment despite being only 6 months out of warranty.
    - 45k miles - Electrics failed - but AA was able to fix free of charge.
    - 50k miles/7 1/2 years - Leaking fuel injector. Citroen Slough tried to fix - couldn't get the fuel injector out after 3 days - charged for labour & said they could only fix it with a £5k new engine. A local Diesel specialist firm replaced all 4 fuel injectors for £700.

There is a good reason why Citroen's are cheap to buy and are even cheaper as second hand cars !!

I'd owned a Xantia and thought I was buying a similar, more up to date, though less attractive car. My 2003 C5 2.2HDi was bought for £4000 & has been a disaster. Though comfortable to drive, with a good turn of speed, it's cost £3000 in emergency repairs during this time, averaging £70 a week.
The diesel additive warning message has appeared consistently and Citroen's dealer couldn't shift it despite expensive Elloys fluid and cat filters costing £400. The demister fa ...

Regarding the anti-pollution fault, the problem was traced to a split in a small bent piece of rubber hose somewhere on the engine. I can't tell you where exactly because it was discovered and repaired by my local Citroen garage.

Only one solution, sell the wretched car. I part exchanged mine 2 yrs ago - thinking back I was far too tolerant; the car spent weeks on ends in the garage from new, and when it was out of warranty I spent thousands on it!

I have had this car for a short while now and the anti pollution light keeps coming on then the engine cuts out. Only Citroen can diagnose problems with this car So after paying for a diagnostic fee paying for a new fuel pump £640 it still has problems. It would appear that these cars do nothing other than break down with unsolvable eletric problems. An exhausts also cost £1900 which is nice to know. It really is a slow uneconimical pile of rubbish fit only for the skip.

An extremely well designed and built modern day cruiser, big enough to move house and cheap to run in comparison to its competitors. I love it.

I too have had a problem with the anti-pollution light when the car just died on me on the motorway had to get it towed off at a cost of £175 standard charge. This was the first time I had put a full fuel tank in so it might have something to do with this, got it back from the garage with the anti pollution light still on and it seems to be working okay but I wont be filling it full again.

Was informed to keep the revs above 2000 especially on long journeys to avoid esp/asr problems that keep occurring seems to work as I've noticed they happen if I don't keep to the information.

I bought a Citroen C5 2.2HDi from a main dealer, withing 7 days the whole clutch mechanism failed. I contacted the dealer and they were happy to cover the parts, but as I didn't buy the extended warranty they would not cover the labor 8 hours at 80+vat...
So after a week of arguing and finally a letter from trading standards they are having to repair the car at no cost. My point is they knew they were in the wrong but thought they could pull a fast one and try to get some money out of me. So wat ...

I would still recommend this car to a friend because it is better than other comparable cars I have owned (Vectra 1.8LS, Subaru Impreza Sport, Mazda 626). For 9-10 months of the year it is trouble free and even when it is cold it is quite rare that the problems persist. The Anti Pollution fault I had was within a month of buying the car (nearly three years ago) and has not resurfaced yet.

Good value big family car. Not as good fuel economy until the ESP fault kicks in then I get 50mpg. Citroen dealer actually refunded my hour labour as the fault returned the next time I went on the motorway. Can't sell yet as have 2 kids at university so am broke! Limping home!

I have a Citroen C5 SX 2.0. Fault is on motorway at 70mph for about 1 hour engine mgt and service lights come on. If continue at 70 engine loses power and misfires. If slow down to 50 - 55mph will run normally with no further problem although lights still on. Pollution warning also comes on. After stopping and a couple of starts lights go out and car runs normally. This has occurred 3 times on motorway but never during normal use even during short 70 mph runs on urban motorway. Dealer check on c ...

The Citroen C5 SX 2.2 HDi was doing fantastic until it went in for a full service. The garage said that the anti pollution fault had shown up on the diagnostics and it had been cutting out. However, prior to the car going into the garage it had not done this!
We said we would take it home and see how it went. Exactly a week later I was doing about 60mph up hill and the fault flashed up and the card died! I had to pop it into neutral and turn it off and on again to get going! I was up hill at th ...

I have recently had the anti-pollution fault message, with esp/asr not functioning then I lost all power over 3000rpm. Fitting a new airflow meter/sensor brought it back to normal (including the esp/asr functions) at once and after driving the car for 5 miles, having stopped & restarted the engine, the pollution fault message disappeared & full power is again available. (change this sensor about £100 from main dealers, fitted in the air filter)
PS - my car had been showing the warning off ...

How I wish I had found this link ages ago. C5. AArghhhh! I have had all the same problems mentioned here and many more. I bought my 2.2 HDi estate when it was less than 2 years old, and with a years warranty left -thank God. 5 perfect months. Huge load lugging capacity, reasonable fuel efficiency, then anti-pollution fault, followed by esp/adr fault, and limp home mode. The garage have had the car back over 30 times since. I have written to the MD of Citroen UK threatened with legal action, and ...

A good large car, this is my second C5 and 4th Citroen, great engines.
Slight worry about high cost of replacing particle filter, although only done 44000mls yet.
I would like to have known there was one fitted before buying(2nd Hand)
Anyone know how to disable auto wiper sensor?
