2600 m (4400k) and absolutely nothing done except a tire. I keep the batteries charged, which I think has helped the longevity of them. I typically get 20-25m per charge, altho I baby the scooter when I can. Nothing but thumbs up. I'm encouraged by the increasing availability of charging stations. A negative is the range and speed. I live in a city and drive accordingly, staying off the main roads unless I have to. I feel safer doing so and believe it extends the range. Not for everyone, but great for city use and parking

I got the EVT 4000E with Lithium Batteries to carry on RV rack because with Lithium it is only 220 pounds. Worked great in city traffic, bit range only 22 miles on these batteries. Speed not enough for traffic outside city, So I am upgrading to www.currentmotor.com now.
The EVT came by mail-order from Alien Scooters and I think I was way overcharged at $5094 which is about the price I can get the new 60 mpg 50 mile range Currentmotor.com scooter for now. But at the time that was the best unit on the market. Alien was also terrible on service, as it took over a month to get a receipt from them so I could register it.

It is a great thing, if not broken down. My copy has(unreasonable) high maintenance costs. Within 3 years (12000km)breakdown (and replacement) of batteries (yr2), frontwheel (
Total cost aroud 50eurorcent per kilometer (excluding electricity for charging). Ie if I had known this before I would seriously reconsider buying EVT.

I have had nothing but fun with this little bike, It is cost effective if not totally 100% reliable, but I have had far more expensive bikes which are far less reliable! Great bit of kit.

65km @ 45km/h is way too overrated. 35km/h is more realistic (it indicates 40km/h) for a radius of about 50 km. Depends on the terrain.
Smooth, comfy, easy, swift, enjoyable! :-)

In my 3500 miles, I've done NOTHING for maintenance. My first 1 1/2 years I didn't charged the batteries enough. Have had the second set for going on 4 years. I can keep up with traffic at 30+mph, but often choose not to to extend charge. It seems to me that gas drivers are used to quick pick up, and this one will do it, but at huge cost of juice. Gas drivers would realize savings too if they eased from the stop sign instead of flooring it. We see the same thing with Prius people who get better or worse mileage..how you accelerate matters. I love my EVT 4000e, having had four gas scooters, wouldn't go back.

EVT 4000e Power cuts out after very short time. Changed batteries at considerable expense but no better. Runs on stand under no load but soon cuts out when put under load.
Very disappointed.

I've had the EVT 4000e scooter for 14 months. Other than an issue with the rear tire loosing pressure (which was corrected by the scooter shop), I've had no problems after about 1400 miles. I keep the batteries charged, avoiding running them down too far. I often do a 35 mile round trip, but stop to recharge for an hour or so, to complete the trip keeping the idiot lights within the 3-4 green light indicators. I really couldn't be happier with the unit. It is limited in its range and speed up hills (certainly an issue here in Seattle), but it's great for getting around. The Lithium ion batteries (which weren't available when I purchased) apparently are a step up. GIve a look.

We had a great time with the EVT 4000e for a month or so until the first charger went bad. Got a replacement which lasted a few months and then it went bad. Couldn't get a third one because the company refused to take responsibility for their defective charger and get this...it's the only one that you can use for the EVT. So now, it looks like we are stuck with a three thousand dollar EVT with no way to charge it. Don't buy this. The word from our dealer, Alien Scooters in Austin, Texas, is that the company has decided to change focus fromt the EVT to a new product and is not keeping up with the parts and service that it promised it's customers per the warranty. If this company does not make it right with me, we will take it to a judge. If you have a similar issue, I'd love to hear from you.

People, I have had a 4000e for 6 years now and last year my charger went out. EVT America does not supply them anymore (nor could I get a responce from any other dealer). To make a long story short, I purchased a $20 unit, 2.5 amp, charger from Hong chong and darn if it works just as good as the $400 piece of junk that came with the scooter. I complained about a 36 volt charger for my bicyle that I got from them (charger only) and they readily sent me a new one. The plug has to be changed over but it is only a two (+ and -) unit so it does not care what charger you use as long as it is a 48 volt. Try it, KC from AR.

I just had to get a new charger for my EVT 168. I bought my EVT used and the original owner bought it from Alien. I did not like my interaction with Alien. I have a feeling this new charger will not last long either and it set me back about $400. You can write to me at austinpepper at gmail. I wrote an email to the EVT america website and never heard from them either.
I tried to find a different type of charger than the one that Alien sold me but since I don't know much about electronics I was afraid I would damage my batteries.
I just had to buy a second charger for my EVT 168. It was not a pleasant experience. I don't like the service at Alien much either. You can contact me at austinpepper at gmail.

If you use it at night you need the lights on but kill battery life. I get 20 miles out of it but in daylight just over 33 miles as I free wheel it down hill keeping the LEDs in the green at a speed 35 to 50 mph.

Utterly reliable, no sound, no drive belt have driven it for 10.000 km at virtually no costs. Yes, you need to balance the battery set before using it. We still use the first set of batteries, but have opted for a better charging device. Consistent range 50 km. We are contemplating using Li- Ion batteries, longer range and considerable weight reduction. Pre-delivery check at importer is crucial, balance the batteries and adjust the charger to European conditions and you have a perfect means of regional transport. No costs no maintenance, we are running 3 days a week on wind/solar charging.

I love my EVT 4000E. Several times a week it takes me up steep hills and along a rough, dirt track to visit my horse. I was determined not to own a car when we moved her to a new yard half way up a Welsh mountain, and this scooter has made it all possible. It is pretty slow up the steep hills (15 mph) but it gets me there and has never let me down. I have done up to 30 miles on one charge. We are seriously thinking of buying a second one. Highly recommended!

Never could go more than 10 miles on a full charge since the day it was new. I would be happy with a 20 mile range. Upon purchase it had a bad battery. Had to pay shipping to receive a new one. I would not buy the 4000e again nor could I recommend it.

In California the EVT 4000e is classified as a motorized bicycle, so it's legal to ride in bike lanes and the license plate registration is only $32 (no annual fees). It goes 25-30mph easily with a 260-pound rider along flat terrain and 30-35 in power mode. Low to no maintenance, a comfortable ride, dual disc brakes and easy to operate.
I'm very pleased with the EVT 4000e, my 8-mile commute takes the same time as driving a car, and I figure it can pay for itself in 2 years, and it frees up the car so my wife can use it when she needs it.

I'm the lectricambler who originally posted this review, this was a few weeks since delivery and I was really enjoying my scooter experience. However, I began having charging issues and the scooter's range dropped significantly, up to the point (at 800 miles on the odometer) that I had to push my scooter the last mile of my 8-mile commute because the batteries failed. A visual inspection showed the batteries were severely expanded, a result of a defective charger.

My dealer was able to arrange for replacement batteries, but then it happened again 800 miles later (and only 8 months into the warranty). I took the scooter to a dealer repair shop and they identified a defective charger. I contacted the warranty department (the importer, not the dealer) and they ignored my phone calls and emails after pinning the blame on the battery manufacturer. I was forced to pay for replacement batteries AND a charger with no help from them. How's that for warranty service?

Now at 3,000 miles, the motor is overheating and replacement is US$500-1,000. I'm really wishing I had bought a gas-powered scooter, for the price of parts and maintenance since I bought this scooter, I could have had a premium brand gas-powered scooter instead, and even considering the cost of fuel, I'd still be ahead of the game financially.

The concept is nice, but based on my experience, save the aggravation and don't waste your time or money. My actual range is more like 10 miles, a 250 pound operator driving 150 feet of elevation over 8 miles.

If you're considering this electric scooter, you might want to think twice and go with a brand-name gas-powered scooter with a REAL dealer warranty and professional service. Don't buy the EVT 4000e (or the 168). Buy a brand-name gas-powered scooter instead. You'll easily drive 10,000 miles with only oil changes for maintenance.

I'm a UK rider with over 20 years experience of motorcycles. I started at 16 with mopeds, and regularly ride 500cc-plus motorcycles. But I've got to say that, more than any other motorbike, my EVT 4000e has, quite simply, blown me away.
I live in a city (Leicester, England), and every day make several journeys of 2-3 miles (to the University campus, the shops and my girlfriend's house). Leaving aside the environmental and cost issues, driving a car is pointless: traffic is usually grid-locked, and there's nowhere to park when you do eventually arrive. So last year I bought a Honda petrol moped.
My Honda (a very ratty ebay bike), was stolen in April 2005, and I replaced it with the EVT 4000e (a 50cc-equivalent electric moped), purchased from Scootelectric (www.scootelectric.co.uk). I was sceptical (electric? I don't think so ...), and talked at length to the people at Scootelectric before making my decision. Best money (£1750) I've ever spent.
The first thing that impressed me, was the build quality, which is as good as any traditional good-quality petrol moped. After a couple of run-through charges, I am now getting regularly 30 miles-plus from a single charge. This is reduced slightly (but not by much), by occasionally switching from ECONOMY to POWER mode. (POWER mode is amazing. I've had 45 mph coming down the hill from my local supermarket).
The one thing that concerned me, was whether other road users and pedestrians would hear me coming. This hasn't been an issue at all, and I can't tell you how many looks and comments I get in my neighbourhood.
The bike is the best ride I've had: smooth, responsive and an ability to hold to the road like glue. (I think this is due to the weight of the batteries, and the low centre of gravity). With no maintenance (just brakes and tyre pressure), zero emissions, no road tax, 1500 miles to the gallon, and minimal running costs, the EVT 4000e is one of those rare finds: a value-for-money product, that does exactly what it's meant to do. All I had to do was to get my electrician to put in an outside plug for me. And, as a fantastic bonus, it's helped me to slash my environmental footprint (if that's the right green phrase).
Of course, it's not 100% green because the electricity used for charging has to come from somewhere. But if one takes the negative viewpoint on this, then what's the point of doing anything? I firmly believe in small changes and small footprints. And I LOVE passing people in their stationary, 8-miles-to-the-gallon 4x4 SUV's.
I'm not sure whether the range would be suitable for a teenager on his or her first wheels (if they are like I used to be, and spend 16 hours a day in the saddle), but for the urban commuter like myself, it's perfect. I very much agree with Hank: highly, highly recommended!!!

This EVT 4000e Electric Scooter is a great means of "around town" transportation. Laugh as you pass petrol stations. Don't plan on freeway trips as it is not authorized and wouldn't be safe anyway.
There is practically NO maintenance on this vehicle!

You should purchase a reputable 48V charger. I purchased the QQE288-4CH42 charger. This seems to be a very high quality charger although I don't have enough miles on it to say for sure. It does have very good charge control.I have had two years experience with the 4808SRF from Soneil.

Too bad that none of the people importing the electric scooters seem to be interested in properly supporting their customers and products.
