“CETME Black Widow .308”

Written on: 25/08/2011

I've heard all the bad things about these rifles, but the one I have has been flawless. I've used Spanish surplus, German surplus, American factory .308 and my own reloads and have yet to have any kind of failures. I've shot about 1000 rounds through it. I bought it August of 2003 for $368.00 out the door. I take this weapon with me hog hunting on foot. I hunt the Red river here in Texas and I've have had it wet, muddy and sandy and this rifle still keeps chugging. The only complaint is that... (read more)

The Century Arms Black Widow Cetme Sporter .308 is a blast to shoot and has - BY FAR - the LOWEST recoil of any .308 I ever fired as attested to by many I have invited to shoot it. My wife says it is about the loudest also, but I think a .223 is a lot harsher.

My CETME was previously owned and I bought it on the internet for $330 shipped a few years ago. It came with 5 mags, an additional set of furniture, a claw scope mount and a red dot scope. It has never failed to fire and functions... (read more)

I have a Century Arms Cetme and am really pleased with it. It is totally functional, the lightest recoil this side of a .22 magnum and is a blast to shoot. I only wish ammo was less expensive. I have read horror stories about CETME's and understand the problems many are experiencing. But there again, there are riflemen and shooters. The CETME is easy to learn about and keep running smoothly.

I bought the rifle to use primarily as a hunting rifle and because I like military rifles and am partial to the 7.62x51/.308 Win caliber. Having the delayed-blowback bolt design, recoil is kept to a minimum and is not unpleasant. I highly reccomend this type of rifle to anyone who is responsible enough to handle it. (read more)

I first bought my rifle for around $429 as a original cetme sporter. I decided to try to improve the overall performance of the rifle. I installed a H&K military green stock set with the larger recoil spring assembly, H&K firing spring, firing pin, cocking assembly, rollers, bayonet lug, and a couple of other H&K parts. I proved this one day when I took my neighbors kid shooting (Marine corp) and we put "500 bad Rounds" through it, (The ones you can get for about $90), And not one miss fired! I can fire maybe one out of ten rounds, the main bolt will not slide into battery when it chambers a round. It locks up just fine when a round is not chambered. I tried using a fine lapping compound at first to polish out the inside of the receiver and that helped, also polished out many of the tool marks on the bolt. The result was a bolt that you could actually hear working better and smoother. However it still will not reliably chamber a round. I tried calling Century Arms and was told to... (read more)

The Century Arms Black Widow Cetme Sporter .308 I bought about three years ago from Century arms was at first a complete disappointment. A friend of mine is interested on obtaining a HK-91 type riffle and I was just reading up on the comments for the Cetme Sporter. What a disappointment "the triple post is soldered out of position making it impossible to sight in" In the mid eighties I purchased a new SAR-8 for $800 from Springfield Armory and this riffle performs exceptionally well to this day with over 4000 cycled rounds. With the use Springfield's mags which are plastic, H.K.'s Aluminum mags, steel replica mags and European surplus, steel cased "corrosive" ammo from the mid 1960's this unit still makes a flawless performance. On several posted reviews it has been matched to the original HK-91and even though it does not co$t as much as an HK it is still a bit steep price wise. new & used units ranged from $900 to $2000, depending on model, year & condition. I have taken interest on the PTR-91 by J.L.D. Enterprises but I have not found enough information to convince me even though the price is right.

I've had my sporter for a few years now. It shot rough at first, about two or three mags worth, but then it settled down and works flawlessly. It may be the kind of ammo you are shooting. The surplus stuff from S. Africa works well, the green laquer stuff from Wolf doesn't work so well.

The Century Arms Black Widow Cetme Sporter .308 is a good affordable alternative to HK91 and more expensive clones. Tried two different rifles in a store and chose one that operated more smoothly and with better trigger pull. The other rifle had significantly harder and sloppier trigger release. Rifle functioned fine until bolt stuck open hard after 60 rounds. Malfunction turned out to be misaligned ejector lever. Excessive sideplay would cause it to miss the groove in the bolt and jam the... (read more)

Dragon5126's Response to scubaman's Review

Written on: 28/01/2005

The reviewer mentioned that his Cetme functioned fine on assorted ammo even military ammo. It is strongly cautioned that standard .308 sporting ammo not be used in this fire arm. The simple fact is this is a 7.62x54 not a .308. You say they are the same? Externally yes. Internally no. True Military 7.62 ammo has heavier brass to lower the risk of a broken cartridge in battle. Since the Cetme is a delayed blowback operation and not a gas operation it counts on the adhesion of the expanded brass to help control rearward bolt movement, to accomplish this end it has a fluted chamber. The thinner brass of commercial sporting ammo tend to overexpand. This results in failed extraction, Broken cartridges and the possibility of jamming another round into the inside of the neck of the broken cartridge that remained in the chamber. As a retired gunsmith/armorer I have seen this numerous times. Unfortunately Centry arms neglects to mention this in the Cetme manual. If you do use commercial .308 ammo in a Cetme, at the bare minimum invest in a broken shell extractor for it. After all, We all know Murphy and his laws, when that cartridge does break, it will most likely be on the first round fired while you hae a brick of ammo to burn up that day.

Scubaman's Response to scubaman's Review

Written on: 16/02/2005

I agree with dragon5126's cautions using commercial .308 loads in CETME/G3 series rifles. In addition, one should not use reloads, handloads or heavy commercial loads in these rifles. And once fired in these rifles, the casings should never be reloaded due to heavy scarring by the fluted chamber. Safety note; my CETME had a safety lever permanently removed from the trigger group as part of the semi-auto modification. The purpose of this lever is to prevent hammer release until the bolt is fully locked in firing position when in full-auto fire. Without this lever, I found it possible to release the hammer without having the bolt fully locked, although in most cases, it won't align with the firing pin to actually fire. Heed the caution in owner's manual to firmly release the bolt actuator to cycle the action in place. One other note; my particular model had stamped steel receiver lacking a claw mount saddle in front of the rear sight. Without it, HK style claw mounts will not stay in place. All that being said, as a converted military firearm, I find my CETME to be reliable and affordable. As mentioned before, Century Arms quality is somewhat spotty and maybe the stars were aligned perfectly when they assembled mine. After the initial fix for bent ejector lever, to date, no jams, misfeed or a broken/stuck case.

This reviewer must have purchased their CETME thinking that it was NIB (New In Box). The reality is that the CETME is clobbered together from non-matching serial number parts and the required number of US made parts to make it compliant with ATF standards. Furthermore, the CETME is not as hard to "Field-strip" as the reviewer implies. It really has two pins at the rear of the reciever that can be removed quite easily compared to the pins on say a Rem 870. It can be interesting to shoot with the "Spanish Lady", but too loud?! What kind of person really complains about that, GET REAL. The report from the CETME just lets everyone know that you have the grand-daddy of all modern battle rifles. The CETME is a rifle with personality, and if you, as the shooter don't want any personality at the range, then go out and buy an M-4gery like all the other yuppie scum that clog up the ranges across America.

Azshooter's Response to Wonieto's Review

Written on: 29/05/2004

The Century CETME is built from the original Spanish CETME rifle, on an American made receiver. After WWII, fleeing German ordinance designers sought refuge in a sympathetic Spanish Government. They were financed by the Centro de Estudios Technicos de Materiales Especiales, a facility for the development and production of Special Weapons. So the name CETME is not that of the firearm, but of the Spanish institute that developed it. It was in Spain the German designers continued work begun on a new rifle in wartime Germany. Although of German design origins, the CETME is definitely a Spanish-produced arm. In fact, the first CETME’s produced under contract HK in Germany between 1975 and 1961, were required to be stamped ‘CETME’. The history of this unique arm clearly demonstrates that the G3 and HK91 both are derived directly fron the Spanish CETME.

The CETME rifle is indeed fun to shoot. The delayed inertial locking action is a unique and reliable mechanism, precluding the use of bleed-off propellant gas to cycle the action. Compare a Century-built CETME with their version of the G3, and you will discover the CETME has noticibly milder recoil. It makes for a comfortable day at the range.
