I bought these Stax SR-404 which are the not-quite-top-of-the-range model which comes with a (valve) amplifier.
The electrostatic sound is so pure and revealing that you need a decent sound input. I bought a second hand Meridian DAC on ebay, which does a great job.
Value for money, I don't know that the more expensive electrostatics are that much better than the cheap ones, and even the basic 202 is very good. (read more)
