“15k and still going strong ”

★★★★★

written by Ryanhoney on 23/02/2015

Mine is a 52 plate 2t ( one of the first 2t ) with it just Turing 15k on the clock it is showing no singes of letting me down mine is fully derestricted this means on the flat I have seen 58 mph and I don't know a bike that it won't out run. The stoppers are amazing. Ride is a bit hard this is due the bike being on the road of over 12 years. Could not recommend it enough as long as ever yeah u strip the carb and give it a clean ( don't need to but I like to) and I run it on v power fule just so the old girl will have the best chance in life ( agian not needed but I like to ) I would recomed using castrol 2 stroke oil as well it is what this 12 year old girl has been on all her life and no just pulled the 15 k hope it will make it 20 k soon

“piaggio zip 50cc 2 stroke”

★★★★★

written by michaeldumplins on 29/09/2013

bought the little zip for my son to get to collage on, it was cheap and didnt run correctly and had been standing in chaps garden for a couple of months, i just managed to ride it home where a full service was done and new exhaust and rear tyre were fitted, the reason for the poor running turned out to be a gummed up main jet in the carb. Then off for its MOT which it passed. all this was 5 months ago since then it has not missed a beat, starts first or second kick, handles well and is a great fun way of getting around, despite being completely standard its faster than his friends Chinese mopeds too.points to watch when buying are exhausts rot quickly budget around £60 - £80 for a replacement. tyres can wear quickly too given there small size (10") around £35 each. and ours while not expensive to run is not as good on petrol as a 4 stroke equivalent, i would think we are getting around 70 mpg, and of course watch out for crash damage and haggle accordingly, the engines are used in other models and are pretty much bomb proof, dont buy anything thats been "tuned" by a teenage tinkerer. So i would recommend the little zip as a no fuss reliable means of transport.

“Zip....an excellent choice”

★★★★★

written by Gubbe on 09/05/2012

Bought my new Zip 50cc 2t five weeks ago. In that time, visiting my Dad in hospital, I have done over 690 MILES (over 1100km's.) I lived all my youth in Rome, riding numerous 50cc Guzzi's, Morini's, Bennelli's etc. I then moved onto 250, 350 and 750's. Having had a heart problem in January this year and not commuting anymore, I sold my Yamaha XV535 and saw the Zip. At £1370 onr and with the same new type engine as the larger Piaggio ranges, amazing value at £1000 less than them! At my age,56,the dealer derestriced it on delivery. I can cruise all day at 30mph, doing 40-45 when needed. Whilst it may reach 50 I feel that would be forcing the engine. 70+ mpg. Not bad. Unlike the above mentioned 50's, the Italians seem to have sorted the electrics...but that was in the early 70's! Starts first time wet or dry. Thing I noticed is some rain water into the rear left indicator cluster solved by putting some liquid rubber around it. Only negative are the 10inch wheels. This is my first small wheel vehicle. (I never had a Vespa). It is VERY twitchy in the wet....especially cornering where you have to really slow down. Be careful of man-hole covers, do not use the front brake and increase your distances. Cars are impatient but my advice is IGNORE them! When you fall off they will just drive off thinking how stupid YOU are. From a 42year rider of large machines, yes it is a step down, but alot of fun too, economical and cheap.

Guest's Response to Gubbe's Review

Hi there. Thanks for your input on the piaggio.

I really hope you respond to this mail. I'm want to buy either a piaggio zip 50 or piaggio zip 100. Have been told that the max speed of piaggio zip 50 is around 50kph. Then i have been told by a private seller his piaggio zip 50 runs at 80kph on a flat road. The piaggio dealer tells me that only the piaggio 100cc can reach this speed!

Who to trust?

Please help!

Thanks [email protected]

Sorry I have been so busy. Hope you bought the Zip 50 and saved money. My derestricted 50 does 40mph / 65kph. Your private seller said 80kph....in his 'made up world.' ( To be polite ) When need a new exhaust will get sport one giving 50mph / 80kph but that's it for me. Would love 70cc kit but totally illegal and police checking scooters all the time. Don't want mine confiscated and crushed. Safe riding. Gubbe

Gubbe's Response to Gubbe's Review

Written on: 16/02/2013

Just an update. I have now covered 6600 miles in 10months and the Zip going fine. Only problem was when I had to put cheap mineral oil in as was stranded far from home. It blocked the exhaust port and the bike lost 90% power running at 10mph !
ONLY use 100% synthetic oil. This week had new Michelin SM100 rear tyre fitted.....so much better than the Chinese factory fitted one. Bike easily does 40mph and when need a new exhaust will get a sport one fitted to give 50mph. Thought of 70cc conversion but illegal and 65mph too much for this bike.
Great little bike...does "exactly what it says on the tin" as they say. Safe riding. Gubbe

“Great buy”

★★★★★

written by on 09/03/2012

I bought my used Zip 2 years a go. Have driven now about 6000 km without any major problems. This is an amazing machine; high quality (made in Austria with Italian parts), cool design and most important very reliable. My model is 4t and fuel consumption is laughable. Would recomend to everybody with sense of good taste and style! Only genuine Vespa can beat this.

6 months ago, I bought my piaggio zip 4 stroke, second hand. I bought the bike for 500 pounds, I am pleased to say, the scooter is incredible, in a vast selection of ways:

The positives: 100 miles to the gallon, acceleration is good, when riding the bike it is incredibly comfortable, lots of under-seat space, cheap on maintenance, tax/mot are very cheap, the build quality is exceptional, very quiet when driving as it is a 4 stoke engine, also incredibly reliable, starts first time!

It is safe to say the bike is incredible and so far, I am yet to fault it in any way! Definitely go buy one,for a first bike it is incredible! They are amazing! :)

I bouoght a black one brand new $3000 all up with helmet and back carry case (highly recommended) for gym clothes or some groceries. It is very quick - mine goes 60 up a hill and down 70k. Mine is probably restricted too. Its really something to be proud of - I goto work and it saves me a couple of hours a day waiting for bus's that never come.

Also - can hold my big jumper, gym clothes, work bag and groceries if you squeeze - also grocery bag holder is a plus and glove box.

Scooter Scooter in the valley was very helpful, friendly and trained me to use it. Whole thing so far very good. I work in the city and work gave me a free scooter car park which is even better - but once I was waiting for the door to open and it cut out because it was cold and mustn't of given it enough gas. Uses 4 dollars of fuel for three weeks of travel to and from work (about 6 k's).

yes make sure you buy the piaggio zip 50 2 stroke! catalytic. the other 4 stroke model is slower. i have had my 2 stroke zip for 6 months now and i must say its ok for speed i got up to 40mph out of it. than i invested in a leovince tt exhurst that made a noticeable difference in acceleration power and speed im now able to go 50mph on a flat. it very
<br/>cheap to run 1 spend &pound;5 on a full tank that lasts all week i travel about 50 miles in a week. its a good ride good handling. storage is a little small under the seat but it fits a medium helmet ok.

I Love it! My last moped had a uncanny ability to see a hill and you
"well you can F*** off!" and break down on the spot.
Not this one, is easy, unbelivebly economic, nippy (not quick as it needs unresticting) and just all round amazing!
I have named him frankie so he has found a place in my heart, like the old one just with a few less chose words involved!
The only problem and i have read as well is the under seat hat place isn't big enough but that could just be the size of my noggin!
Great buy. Great fun. Great fuel econamy. And just really cute!

My zip has been very reliable apart from the time i sneezed and crashed and the time he was blown over in the wind. Also i would suggest that you take heed of the reserve tank light because after a couple of miles scooters get very heavy to push. Other than that my moped is the best thing that has happened to me lately. My friends have named him Herod after the King who killed lots of babies (although he has only killed one squirrel to date). Keep an eye on the mirrors as the nuts need to be tightened up a lot else they blow around.

iv'e had my blue Piaggio zip 50 for about 6 months now, and i have to say what a cracking little thing it is. compared to other scooters it looks quite small, however, it's a chunky bike. The fuel consumption is unbelievable. My yellow petrol light was flashing but it still managed another 3 miles. the only thing i do not like would be that it's not that fast. The tops i get out of mine is about 32 mph.

~The Piaggio Zip is an all round good bike! I have had mine for 2 years if you want something to get you to A to B its brill. Its not very fast but its only a 50cc if you want somthing fast get the 100cc zip. I will say i got told that to let your moter warm up for 3 to 4 min before you drive it or you can damage it!

written by nlel on 31/03/2009

I have never held a car or bike licence but had an idea to get a scooter and came across the Zip model from Piaggio, I liked the look of it and the fact it had italian origins. I was thinking about getting one second had and could of had a 2001 model for £ 350 or a £ 2007 for £ 500 with a broken left mirror but decided to hang on to see what 2009 would bring.

This years model (2009) has gone back to being 2 stroke and I ended up getting a Red one of those for £ 999 including a jacket, helmet and gloves costing £ 155 if bought seperately. I am in Jersey so didn't pay UK VAT but did pay 3% Jersey GST.
Anyway I am very happy with my shiny new bike and have ridden it around a private car park as it is not insured yet and I don't have a provisional licence yet.... its pretty easy to get the hang of it really and my throttle movements are a lot more suttle then when I first rode it.

I have read that you should let the bike warm up for 3-4 mins everytime you start it from cold so will be doing that from now on. Overall very nice bike and good value for money, its quality of that you can be sure.

written by Zip009 on 18/03/2009

I bought my little blue 56 reg Piaggio Zip 4 stroke last April 2008 and it had done 3800 kilometers as it had one previous owner. It has been an absolutely superb little bike to ride and has beeen mechanically absolutely sound. Has started perfectly in all weather conditions and has been very responsive to ride, especially whilst cornering. Even though it is still restricted, it accelerates fairly quick and does 40mph which is fast enough for me. I have managed to do over 2500 miles in just under a year,

I  removed the speed restrictor off my Piaggio Zip 49cc scooter. For a few months it has been going fine but recently when I urn the throttle full on it appear to be choking and not responding and lack any power. Can it be that it needs a different CDI unit? Everything else looks fine. I have put in a new plug the leads are or the carb is fine and clean. Any advice would be appreciated.
