Mountfield SP470 is a dependable machine which if maintained yearly puts more expensive mowers to shame. Can cope with wet grass, is v frugal with fuel and gives a great finish. I wouldnt bother buying a pro machine unless using every day all day. But- front Wheels have started to wooble after 4 years of pro use- once replaces shouldt be a prob.

I've read the other reviews on the Mountfield SP470 and feel genuinely sorry for those who have experienced problems - perhaps they were from the Friday afternoon/Monday morning assembly. If I'd had the same problems I'd probably say the same BUT ... this is my 7th consecutive summer using my SP470 on a large undulating garden with no problems other than the odd bit falling off which never seems to impact on its perfomance! I'm now loathe to have it serviced in case it starts off a catalogue o ...

Bought my Mountfield SP470 from B&Q and now 4 yrs old, I realy can't grumble. It starts easily, the height adjustment is relatively easy despite one plastic adjuster snapping off and it cuts the grass. The broken adjuster, together with the broken belt cowling above the blade were both caused by misuse. A common problem with the B&S engine is "hunting", commonly solved by replacing the carbs gasket & diaphragm set (£5.50), though in my case it simply required the jets to be blown through w ...

Bought this Mountfield SP470 mower from B&Q last year, the drive belt falls off every time I use it, the starter toggle has snapped off, the grass box doesn't work properly and I get showered in grass cuttings, the petrol cap has broken and most other nuts and bolts have worked loose. Only buy this mower if you intend to use it only once.

The Briggs & Stratton engine is the best make you can get, and anyone having problems is obviously mis-treating it or not following the service shedule! While the belt drive isn't the best method of all time, with proper adjustment it's perfectly capable. The wheels do tend to get a little loose after a LOT of use, but this doesn't make it unusable by any means! This is a great lawnmower, and as long as you know how to use and look after your tools, you can't go wrong!

bought our mountfield sp470 from b&q .started off ok. now 2 summers on it sounds like a bag of spanners....hunting on and off ,cuts out. Rubbish in my opinion....save your pennies and get something with a honda engine.

The Mountfield SP470 is flimsy...front wheel is broken, handle sheared, not enough power to move of its own accord...self-propelled?...engine is fine...after one and a half seasons

Don't buy this Mountfield SP470 mower. I wish I had read the other reviews on this site before buying the sp470. It looks like my problems are not unique.

Motor has come loose from base, total pain to bolt back on, starter cable snapped simple to replace? why have they riveted the starter mechanism to the body when it is bound to need replacing at some point. Ever heard of nuts and bolts, oh yea you have and they keep coming lose
And I had to rebuild the throttle as the person who put it together did it in such a way as it could not possible work.

Mountfield SP470 is an awful mower from a lousy company.

I use our Mountfield SP470 on a regular basis and i have had it for at least 4 years and it still works like its brand new, not only that but if its 4 years old and is still working, when you compare it to most other lawn mowers they have often stopped working by now. So in my opinion the SP470 is a truly reliable machine.

i am a pro gardener so the Mountfield SP470 mower gets much more sustained use than it is intended for.overall i'm pleased, the engine is sound(oil changed regularly) and starting reliable.the chassis build quality is poor.the front wheels have started to wobble, and the red plastic start handle recently snapped off.the engine is only 3.5bhp,so will not push long/wet grass through to the box very efficiently.i'm upgrading to a honda, husqvarna or hayter.i reckon its fair value for money,if you get ...

Bought Mountfield SP470 at B+Q cheap, starts first time every time even after winter layup.
No problems with anything ever coming loose.
Grass box is fine, have a very hilly garden and the clutch is starting to slip after approx 6 years.
    Good for the money.

Satisfactory for the work it has done. The Mountfield has lasted well over 4 years. The arm has fallen off and I can't find a spare

This Mountfield SP470 has served me well for 3 years with no problems, still starts first time. My only complaints are the build quality, flimsy and nowhere near as good as my previous Mountfield and the cutting height is not low enough, have tried to see if blade spacers were available with no joy. Have had my money's worth but will not buy a Mountfield again.

I paid what I consider a premium to purchase this Mountfield SP470 mower from B&Q for peace of mind - what a mistake. After 12 weeks the starter broke (destroyed); the cheap and nasty plastic wheel bearings always squeak and the grass box is terrible. It is held together at the front with little plastic clips that always come undone - totally unsuitable. Both B&Q and Mountfield don't want to know - I have wasted my money and the two year warranty appears to be useless. I now have to buy a Honda ...

The guarantee on my Mountfield SP470 was for three years but I gave up on it after 2.
Even if I got it fixed it would have been hassle. I lost money on it but it was a good move buying another one.

Bought Mountfield SP470 at B & Q . Wheel dropped off at first use. Tried to get refund. B & Q refused. Managed to fix wheel on but grass and dirt got in between wheel case and clogged up eventually stopping wheels from going round. Back wheel height adjusters broke. Ended up sledging mower round garden. Don't buy a mower from B & Q and don't buy a Mountfield. Total rubbish!

As a landscaper, I have frequently purchased Mountfield mowers, including the SP470. They are cheap and you get what you pay for. We use them constantly for about 2-3 years until they are fit for spares or a skip! Reliable engines and relatively cheap parts (dont go to B&Q- a waste of time).
