Purchased a Mountfield front cut ride on mulching lawn mower model 1125m in July 2008 for £1249.00 from R.H. Crawford of Firthville Boston Lincolnshire. Over the next 18 months the machine was a nightmare broke down many times cant remember how many on a couple of occasions I even had to ring R.H. Crawfords to come and take it out of my garden as could not get it back to my garage. Did not keep records as did not realise would have reason to do so as Crawfords did repairs under guarantee.... If u use this mower without the grass box or in grass with cuttings on it the grass gets stuck in the wheels and locks the wheels up. The mower then gets harder and harder to push until u pick the grass out which is very difficult and annoying. Find a mower with proper wheels. (read more)

This is a review of the old mower about 2003 model. It's red. Good stuff... Very forgiving and easy for anyone to get a great finish every time, and really easy to cut up to walls/edges because of the deck setup and the position of the wheels. Very simple to use. Lightweight, at only around 25kg it's about the lightest self-propelled, petrol mower there is. Has a Briggs and Stratton classic engine which is very well supported by any service centre and generally lasts longer than the rest of... (read more)

Had mine (470) for 7 years following 2 or 3 other ones from different makes which were unreliable. It has gone on for 7 years and still going fine without a single problem except that the self-drive cable stretched and needed adjustment. Reading the other reviews there is clearly a quality control problem as they're either unltra-reliable from day one or utterly unreliable form day one.
Personally, I'm moving to the Channel Islands and I;ve bought another one from B&Q there and will leave... (read more)

Reliable hard working lawnmower, have used on my own lawn and also on 10 other lawns as I set up lawn mowing business.
Simple to start and operate, light enough to lift in and out of van.
Maintenance straight forward, manual not very comprehensive suspect they want you to take it to a dealer for service, but changing oils, cleaning air filter straight forward. Spares readily available. (read more)

I bought my SP470 second hand when it was a year old but like new. I have had it for over 2 years now and am impressed with it. Not only does it cut my garden but I also have do 6 others that I do regularly. It has never missed a beat, gives a good finish and can cope with quite long grass. It is nice and light so is easy to lift in and out of my van. However the front wheels are starting to turn in and look as if they could come off soon. Reliable and easy to use machine comes highly... (read more)

What a dreadful mower! The pull starter handle broke after a couple of days. The plastic top cover fell off a week or so later, and won't fit back on. After 12 months, the front wheels have splayed out. And then the push bar/handle broke. Mountfield now won't replace the mower because it's over 12 months old (even though it's still in warranty), and won't fix the splayed front wheels (saying I've caused this myself somehow!) Their customer services are apalling ... they don't reply to... (read more)

I have found the engine starts very well but the construction is flimsy with wheels woobly after a few uses. The pull cord has snapped and the mechanism appears to be riveted to the engine. If you ring up the maintenance phone line they are worse than useless - apparently replacing a pull cord is too complicated for them to deal with, they promise to give you a number for Briggs and Stratton (engine makers) and then they hang up. My previous Mountfield died after 20 years of great service, so no shock that I replaced it with another similar machine. But what a disappointment this machine is. It needs constant maintenance. In particular, the self propelled drive belt comes off too easily - you can fix by removing the battery, then the battery housing (there's a screw to remove, then lift and pull) and then you have access to the pulley. The build quality is poor. The engine is good. After 2 years the machine looks... (read more)

I've had my 470 for 8 years and has given me no trouble. I change the oil and spark plug every 2 or 3 years and sharpen the blade. This year the engine started to hunt and sounded like it was misfiring. I changed the worn carbuettor diaphragm (£1.75) which is a common fault and now it runs like new again. (read more)

5 years ago I bought a Mountfield SP460 roller from B&Q. My father had had a mountfield in the 1970s and I recall it giving 25 years of reliable service. In short it was a good quality hard wearing lawn mower. Not so now. Looking at the SP460 roller you'd think I'd had it 25 years not 5. I have looked after it well, kept it serviced and dry stored in the garage. The Briggs and Stratton engine is fine, although the rest is really flimsy and has not weathered well with my light garden... (read more)

I've read the other reviews on the Mountfield SP470 and feel genuinely sorry for those who have experienced problems - perhaps they were from the Friday afternoon/Monday morning assembly. Bought my Mountfield SP470 from B&Q and now 4 yrs old, I realy can't grumble. It starts easily, the height adjustment is relatively easy despite one plastic adjuster snapping off and it cuts the grass. The broken adjuster, together with the broken belt cowling above the blade were both caused by misuse. A common problem with the B&S engine is "hunting", commonly solved by replacing the carbs gasket & diaphragm set (£5.50), though in my case it simply required the jets to be blown through... The Briggs & Stratton engine is the best make you can get, and anyone having problems is obviously mis-treating it or not following the service shedule! While the belt drive isn't the best method of all time, with proper adjustment it's perfectly capable. The wheels do tend to get a little loose after a LOT of use, but this doesn't make it unusable by any means! This is a great lawnmower, and as long as you know how to use and look after your tools, you can't go wrong! (read more)

I paid what I consider a premium to purchase this Mountfield SP470 mower from B&Q for peace of mind - what a mistake. After 12 weeks the starter broke (destroyed); the cheap and nasty plastic wheel bearings always squeak and the grass box is terrible. One of the wheels has now come off so often I always carry spanners around with me when I mow.
Every time I now mow at least one screw will work its way loose and I get to spend many happy hours rummaging in the garden looking for them.
Its latest trick is to sound like a wailing banshee and cut out while I am mowing. It also has the standard feature of the throttle cable (which i assume must be made out of kryptonite) managing to wear through the high quality plastic.

Don't think for a moment that paying a premium for a Mountfield gets you a better quality machine than the bargain priced brands from China. Grass box seems designed to last 5 minutes. It's held together with brittle plastic clips and the customer has to finish the building process. It took me an hour just to save Mountfield a couple of pence in logistic costs.
Instructions are poor- a bit like the whole Mountfield experience really. Save up and buy a Honda. (read more)

I would not recommend this make of mower to anyone based on my experience. I bought the machine from B&Q and would have expected to have no problem on any subsequent spares needed.
