Good Points: Met at airport by friendly, competent driver with comfortable a/c people-mover (part of hotel deal). Ten/twelve minutes' drive to hotel.
Very large (5 x 16 metres!) room, well appointed; good hot/cold water supply; good air-conditioning.

Bad Points: In spite of being met at the airport, we were not expected by the hotel counter staff; took more than an hour to ready a room.
Our passports stored casually in a tray on the front counter.
Uncomfortably hard mattress (have read this many times in reviews of other hotels in Dubai - is this a cultural thing?).
Food in the hotel dining-room well below par, and over-priced.
Constant low-frequency repetitive noise (boomp-boomp-boomp-boomp) coming from the hotel's night-club/disco (seven floors below!) disturbed/prevented sleep 10:00pm through 3:00am (Monday night).
Woken again at 5:00am by electronically amplified noise from two competing mosques within 200 to 300 metres distance (probably true of many hotels in Dubai - mosques seem to be scattered every few hundred metres, grid pattern, across the city, and they all do this!).
'No hotel transport available'to return to airport; we took a taxi.

General comments: Whilst most of this must seem rather unflattering, the four-out-of-ten rating that I would give the St George Hotel is much better than I would give for Dubai generally - many flashy shops and buildings, but overall, not a nice place to visit, largely on account of the new airport, the design of which (after much consideration) I regard as an insult to human intelligence. Some of the management practices we saw there are just absurd, and the behaviour of the (mostly male) immigration staff is truly deplorable.
Whilst I would give St George Hotel an almost passing grade, it is certain that I will never willingly go to Dubai again, not even in transit.
