“topaz timeshare”

written by on 06/12/2012

visited my timeshare 3 years ago, noticed deterioration, spoke to staff member and was assured all apartments were being refurbished and would be complete in 18 months. My son used it this year 2012 and said pool sunbeds limited, dirty and broken.Furnishing in apartment grubby. They spent every day away from Topaz so they could have nice surroundings which is not satisfactory. They were offered 2 alternatives but both were even worse than there own.Would be interested to see what other owners think or have done about it.

I am in the same position regarding the threat of prosecution by a debt collecting agency.
I stopped using the hotel as the room, amenities and service had deteriorated to nothing more than a shambles.
Unfortunately I inherited this when the loss of my parents in 2005 with approx' 7 years remaining but stopped using this in 2009.
No communications whatsoever were ever received between 2010 to 2013 from the Topaz until 5 days after the last contracted week. When this was questioned I was informed that numerous communications had been posted out 'but unfortunately due to the Royal Mail' sometimes items are not received!!! (Prior to 2010 I received all AGM minutes/invoices/newsletters etc).
I would be interested if anybody would be be able to forward their views and opinions and if they have any photographs they are prepared to share.

“Very Angry Horrible Place to Stay”

★☆☆☆☆

written by sharonmccreadie on 04/09/2012

Just returned from a week of total depressive hell. Both me and my husband went here on 25th August and had booked as suited our budget and due to its 4*rating. How wrong did i get it. On arrival the staff didnt even greet us we waited and only to be told after a very long night flight that we had to wait until 2pm for a room. We went for lunch until this was ready and this was the start of our holiday nightmare. Being vegetarian im quite easy to please but what was on offer there was fly filled salad and bland pasta with nothing to taste. So tired we went back to reception and asked if a room was available and to be to0ld yes and given directions to go underground and across street to another part of hotel we got to our room. I cried immediately horrified at the state of the room. Hairdyer hanging of wall with bare wires showing, tv front all bashed inwards, springs sticking out bed at side of matteress total dirty bed disgusting to say the least. I refused to unpack and went straight to reception very upset only to be told there was nothing they could do. I asked them for internet code so i could go online and contact Lowcostholidays only to be told i had to pay.Very very unhelpfull i got very emotional and had to leave the hotel and call my daughter back home in Scotland and get her to help me with tour operator. My husband went back into hotel and they said they had a call from Lowcost and that they could offer us and upgrade room but not until next day.Still very distraught i awaited on call from Lowcostholiday which i got to offer another hotel up the street which we went to view and was in such a state we had to agree to stay at the Topaz until next day and see what our room would be like.We still refused to sit in the hotel as it was very stale the smell of damp was horrendous so we walked all afternoon and evening very tired trying to find our own accomodation. Sadly we couldnt find anything and walking in circles around a place we didnt know we found our way back to the Topaz and stayed the night. Once morning came and very little sleep from the horrible bed we went to reception to see if a room was available. They gave us a poolside view within the main hotel but sadly they could have just gave us one of the matts around pool to sleep on and this would have been fresher and more comfortable as the room we now had was just as bad but had no alternative but to stay there. things only got worse once we sat for dinner and again the food was just awfull flies all over the cheese and salad nothing covered. Disgusting then waiters so grim come and ask what u want to drink and have to sign for it and the allowance of only 1 drink each very bad service.Things just didnt get better i had to beg practically for food that had no meat what so ever and eventually got a small bowl of chips to eat with nothing else. they had tortellini on offer which was apparently cheese only and once cut it had meat throughout and being vegetarian this was disturbing that they though i would not notice. After another distressing night we decided to goto bed as the entertainment as they so called it was a total disgrace but thought we will get up into our 3rd day and get some sun. When we went down to the poolside which we knew had to be very early as there was very little loungers or parasols possible 20 in total parasols for entire complex.Broken filthy loungers which u had to piece together to lie on and they have this down as a $* hotel. Many other customers were told that the hotel was closing for refurbishment in 6 weeks time well i can only say that i would demolish this 1* mess as with the total disregard to our feelings i will certainly never return even if it was re built totally as the staff need to be refurbished also and also management. I have used lowcost on many occassions but to save hard and get a holiday and get there to be so upset and distressed i dont think i will reccomend to anyone else. I am writing to as many agencies as i can and sending photographs to them also of what this hotel is actually like as i feel i have lost a lot of money which i just havent got now and with eating and drinking outwith the hotel it cost us double our budget.I am still very very upset due to this ordeal and will await to see if anyone from lowcostholidays helps in our plea. For now i would encourage other people thinking of booking this holiday to really read the reviews all over and believe that this is all true of this hotel.

“Topaz greed”

★☆☆☆☆

written by mike8962 on 24/08/2011

Topaz Hotel, Bugibba, Malta - worst hotel I have stayed in. Food, for all-inclusive, is very poor. Greedy hotel management ask guests to vacate areas for private parties to the annoyance of paying guests. Evening entertainment ridiculous. All inclusive rules changed during our stay requiring guests to queue at a till, sign till slip, present till slip at bar and receive one drink only........could not initially get drinks for the rest of the family as they had to individually get their own......how does a three year old sign for a drink???? Guests went mad and complained resulting in Management making compromise. It seems that guests enjoyment is a very low priority at this hotel. Hotel photographs show lots of sun umbrellas ..... joke...... hotel staff hide them at the end of each day and miraculously find them the next.......don't expect a lie-in as sunbeds are gone by 6.30am. Hotel, like much of Bugibba, needs a massive refurbishment. Hotel staff did, however, react promptly to problems with the room shower. Be aware that rooms contain a fridge and TV, however you have to pay for a TV remote control and a fuse for the fridge plug!!!! Pool is never cleaned as demonstrated by the amount of scum on the perspex screen separting the childrens section of the pool......if you like swimming in other peoples shed hair and worse then this is the place for you!

“Good time”

★★★★☆

written by on 17/08/2011

The staff at the hotel were very helpful and friendly, couldn't do enough for us. The food was great although breakfast became somewhat tedious after 2 weeks of the same things every day with only boiled eggs or scrambled powdered eggs. The rooms although old were clean and the girls came in every day to change towels and see if we needed anything. The entertainment was not to everyones taste and the pool with it being the school holidays was full of kids so you were unable to swim as although it said no inflatables in the pool it was full of them through the day. The local buses were cheap enough for a day ticket and covered all the parts of the island you would want to visit although they were always crowded and you needed to find the best place to go to make sure you got on a bus as the first day we were directed to the nearest stop and waited 1 hour before we could get on but if we walked 5 mins in the other direction we got on a bus every time. Overall Malta is a lovely place to visit i would definately go back but would probably only stay at the Topaz if i took kids or went out of school holidays

“good value for money”

written by yplx on 11/08/2011

Just got back from one week holiday in Malta. The hotel is good value for money. The people at reception is very friendly and helpful and responsive. The room is spacious and clean. Food variety is good. Very convenient location for public transport. For holiday makers like us whose holiday routine is going out around the city and come back to hotel for a satisfactory meal and shower and relaxing, this hotel is perfect.

Great as a base, basic but clean and good choice of food. Malta is a lovely place to go out every day and explore car hire is good value. Hotel stay was used as a place to sleep and eat and the topaz is fine for that purpose.

Is not a good hotel. You can't rest because the cleaning personnel goes screaming by the hotel, the cleaning of the rooms do it so later and badly, you can find the door of the room wide open when you returns of your daily visit. The mattresses have the docks broken, is impossible sleep. In the corridor you can find broken glasses, and alfombrillas of bathroom. The cleaning personnel blocks the elevator doors for they use, and the customer have to go up the lugagge by the stairs, and when you are going out of the elevator you must jump buckets, bags,etc... I have many photos of this.

written by on 11/10/2009

After reading the reviews on the internet I was rather worried. But when we got there the staff were really helpful and friendly. The rooms was very clean. The sheets were changed regulary and the towels changed daily. The smell that people are moaning about was when you go to the appartments, its underground and is where I assum the pipes are for the swimming pool, its not that bad and you only smell this when underground. We didnt spend much time at the pool as we were there to see Malta not sit around the pool all day, the beds were old but they were fine, you helped yourself to the sun beds and the umbrellas. We went self catering and paid for breakfast once which was expensive but a lot of choice. We bought bread, butter etc and had breakfast in the room. The room we stayed in was number 1162, it had a kettle, toaster, fridge, freezer quite enough facilities so you can make you own breakfast and have a good cup of tea. The Topaz Hotel over all is very clean nice place. At the end of the day you dont pay hilton prices so dont expect a Hilton. It was adaquate for our stay and would defently go back to the same hotel. stars all the way.

“I have been a timeshare member of the Topaz Aparthotel...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 07/09/2009

I have been a timeshare member of the Topaz Aparthotel for over 15 years and can honestly state that the hotel has changed for the worse but some of the issues raised relate to the general decline in tourism throughout the island / travel industry (cut backs). Yes, it's definitely not 4 star but 3, most of the staff are friendly and the accommodation is basic but clean. The lifts need to have a major service as they regularly brake down and people who comment, it's a walk to the beach, surely they should have known this before booking. The biggest issue I have is not with the hotel but the general dog dirt and rubbish left on the pavements and they drastically need to tackle this issue as it is letting the whole island down. All inclusive has been the down fall of the island as the bars and restaurants are closing down because no one is going out the complex. The powers that be need to wake up because we do expect more for our money but we are actually getting less every year.

“Agreeing with the majority of reviews on Topaz...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by benspence78 on 16/09/2007

Agreeing with the majority of reviews on Topaz Aparthotel, the 4 Star rating is not correct. Seems more like 2 Star. Although the foyer is smart enough, the rest of the building leaves a lot to be desired.

Firstly the room, and more importantly the bed. Although we booked a double room we were presented with twin beds. Although we told reception they said there's nothing they can do until the following morning. Apparently the beds in every room are singles. The next day when we came back later on the two singles were pushed together with a sheet that didn't even cover the two mattresses. The mattresses were poor quality anyway. We ended up complaining every day to the chambermaids and reception and were reassured they would change the sheets but we had the same sheets for the entire week!

The bathroom was poor quality, the toilet seat was broken, toilet didn't flush properly and shower was poor. The view from the balcony was of some back street and there was barely room to sit on it.

The corridors were very shabby, narrow, dark (the light was broken outside our room) and gave the hotel a feeling of a labyrinth. Although they advertised as several restaurants there was only really one for the half board, a buffet style. The food was horrendous, breakfast and dinner. All the meats were fatty and had bones in. Ended up eating boiled eggs and toast every breakfast.

Most staff were unhelpful, but the chambermaids were the worst. They would come in the room at 8.45am without knocking expecting the room to be empty. If we were still in the room they would walk in (before giving us chance to dress) and ask us to sign a bit of paper giving them permission to come back tomorrow instead to clean the room. Several other guests we spoke to had the same experiences. I can go on, such as the computers in the foyer were all out of order but I'm sure you get the picture. Avoid at all costs!

“This was our first trip to Malta and the Topaz...”

★★★★★

written by Marie Hession on 07/07/2006

This was our first trip to Malta and the Topaz aparthotel was a very good choice. We had an apartment which was very clean with a hugh balcony and excellent air-conditioning. It is located about seven minutes walk from the main square where a lot of pubs and restaurants are located. Only a minute's walk from the hotel we found a bar and restaurant where we ate most of our meals and had at least a few drinks every night (La Pasion). The location of the topaz is excellent for people that want to be able to get a good nights sleep without being woken up by noise from outside. Malta is an excellent place to go on holidays and I would not hesitate about staying in the Topaz again.

“The Topaz Aparthotel in Malta is listed in some...”

★★☆☆☆

written by petendeb64 on 06/04/2006

The Topaz Aparthotel in Malta is listed in some reviews as 4 star, and that is what I expected. Some other reviews list it as 3 star, and that is about what we got, although I have stayed in better 3 star accommodation. The reception area is the only 4 star area.

We had several nights of disturbed sleep from guests walking and talking in the tiled corridors. Carpet would deaden the sound, but the long, narrow corridors echo and amplify the noise.

The food was OK, but definitely not 4 star.
For half board and all inclusive guests, the hotel offers an option to swap a meal in the normal restaurant for a meal in their pizza restaurant next door. The value of the pizza meal is approximately half the value of the normal restaurant, plus you still have to pay for the extras. Also the salad here had bits of tuna through it.

The hotel is in a run down condition throughout, except for the reception area. It needs a coat of paint and some general maintenance - as detailed below:

1. Although crime is low in Malta and we did not have any problems, our balcony door would not lock.
2. The toilet would not flush properly.
3. The mattresses were lumpy, uncomfortable and noisy.

Malta overall was enjoyable, and the buses are definitely the way to travel. You can also get multiple day tickets which offer good savings over single trip fares.

This was our first trip to Malta and I was worried after reading some mixed reviews about the Topaz, but it is a lovely hotel and I wouldn't hesitate to return. The food was excellent everyday and the choice was always very good. Our room was a family room with a seperate living area. Both the room and the hotel in general were very clean. The entertainment on at night was always good fun.

★★☆☆☆

written by alan mapp on 04/10/2005

Although the Topaz Aparthotel reception area looked the part, the staff had little idea of how to help. No resort hotel details in room. Although there are plenty of pool rules none of them are enforced or adhered to. There is no lifeguard, which makes the pool a potentially unsafe area. No inflatables, no diving, no reserving of sunbeds with towels, all rules totally ignored because they are not enforced by hotel staff. It took me six attempts with reception to find a working remote control for the tv. Our first room overlooked a shabby overparked road. We eventually changed rooms after joining a long queue at reception of similar dissatisfied customers. In our opinion probably the worst hotel we have ever stayed in and would probably never visit Malta again because of our experience.

★★★★☆

written by Michelle George on 23/07/2005

Topaz Aparthotel has spent over a million pounds in the past few years upgrading its facilities. We as a family - two adults and two teenagers - love it! We are even happier that this year finally they are no longer offering 'all inclusive' holidays. This turned this hotel into a busy, crowded place - due to people on all inclusive - not budging all day and night long so they can drink and eat as much as they can! We have always been happy with the staff and our rooms are cleaned every day to some degree. Malta is not the most pituresque place, however, the warmth of the people outweigh this.

Bugibba, Topaz Aparthotel - Just returned (June 2005) from a week's half board at the Topaz in Bugibba. Had a very good stay, food, room, pool, staff, etc., all excellent value for money. Felt that most people that we spoke to were enjoying the hotel as we were. Highly recommended.

written by travelling c on 21/09/2004

I have stayed in everything from a 2* to a 5* and I found that the Topaz was definitely a 3* and NOTHING MORE. The location is okay but if you want a sandy beach, the nearest one is about a 20 minute bus ride away, the hotel was not very impressive, our room was cleaned only ONCE for the whole week that we were there, we went self-catering and found that our hot plates in the kitchen area did not work, other guests complained about how awful the hotel food was.
If you don't really travel, then this hotel will probably be adequate, but if you are expecting a 4* hotel, then you will surely be disappointed!

We visited the Topaz in June 2005. It was a cheap last minute holiday - however, if you expect 4* don't come to this hotel. At times, staff were unhelpful bordering on rude. Expect a long walk if you are situated in the part of the hotel which is on the other side of the road! Don't expect any help with directions to the lifts or offers of help with your luggage!!
<br>
<br>If you want a quiet time around the pool - forget it. Music blares out all the time from the hotel's sound system and that is from the 60s!!!
<br>Take your own personal stereo if you want to escape the noise.
<br>
<br>This hotel wants to have a good look at itself. It's so obviously not a 4* hotel - and we have been in many. Our rating is no more than 3*!!!
