“Extremely disappointing.”

Written on: 10/09/2012 by CalumC

I was extremely disappointed in this hotel: we booked it in the knowledge that 4 star meant a certain level of comfort and cleanliness, as well as the fact that it contained a gym (crucial for my holiday partner as she was running a 10 mile race two days after we returned), a sauna, an indoor swimming pool, and a jacuzzi as amenities for guests. Regarding these: - Gym: according to the extremely rude and unhelpful reception staff (besides one guy called Victor), the gym was "in the process... (read more)

“A truly dreadful hotel”

Written on: 30/06/2012

We have just returned from 14 days of absolute misery at the Crown Hotel in Bugibba. There is so much wrong with the place I scarcely know where to begin, but if I tell you that it is known throughout the resort as Fawlty Towers you’ll get the general idea. The temperature was in the high 90's for the duration of our stay and there was NO air conditioning in the entire hotel for the 14 days. The AIR-CONDITIONING DOESN’T WORK. Although someone let slip that the system functions well... (read more)

Written on: 09/10/2010

Just come back from the Crown Hotel where we was supposed to spend a week as a short break. We cut our holiday short and flew back home after 4 days. Just could not stand it any longer. Firstly, we had a room that smelled of wee! There were no windows in the room and the balcony was not a balcony, just a small fenced in patio area that was facing a very tall wall. You could not see outside at all so we did not even know what the weather was like. We asked to be moved but was told that... (read more)

Whatever rennovation was going on during your awful holiday in 2010, there was little evidence of it when we spent a horrible fortnight there in 2012. This is a hotel to be avoided at all costs. Considering the number of awful reviews it gets and the poor impression it gives of Malta, I cannot understand why the Maltese Tourist Office hasn't downgraded it from it's current 4 Star status.

First time in Malta (Feb-Mar 2010) and we hoped for a good 4 star hotel - but the Crown is not anywhere near that - a reasonable 2 star is best..staff very friendly and food just about OK - but showers are a joke, a 10 year old may get in one but not an adult person - we complained as did a large majority of newcomers on arrival, and all were moved - we got a bath with antiquated mixer shower...the bar doesnt open until 19.00hrs and closes at 2300 hrs - unbelievable......entertainment... Both my wife and I were of the opinion that the Crown Hotel at Bugibba was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in.
One night was enough and we demanded a move to the Suncrest in Quara if we had not moved we would have returned to England immediately. The room was poor, cleanliness was dire, carpets that had not been cleaned in years, a shower that did not work the story could go on it was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in.

Nice comfortable bedroom with clean towels daily and bedding regularly changed, a bit dark due to balcony looking out onto neighbouring building, front rooms would be better. Bathrooms in need of an update. Staff friendly and food good. Communal areas spotless. Would recommend to people wanting small, clean, friendly hotel with no frills. After reading the previous reviews, we were very anxious about our stay at this hotel, but pleasantly surprised. Agree that The Crown Hotel is possibly not a 4*, but the breakfast was good, clean towels everyday, room cleaned and tidied everyday even on Sundays. Yes our shower was rather small, but we had a laugh everytime we had a shower because if you dropped the soap, try to retrieve it you turned the shower off,but plenty of hot water. “Not a 4 star hotel, 2 on a good day.”

Written on: 29/11/2008 by Pen Gwyn (1 review written)

Not a 4 star hotel, 2 on a good day.
Food was OK. Breakfast passable. Beds were lumpy with springs just waiting to strike. Pillows were simply bags filled with lumps of foam.
Shower too small, could hardly get in the door opening and the tray filled with water after a couple of minutes. WC wouldn't flush away anything much, had to fill a bucket with water and throw it down.
TV was almost useless. Lighting too dim to read by.
View from balcony over rubbish bins, TV aerials and blank walls.

My partner and I spent two weeks there a few months ago(may 2008). The resort is fantastic but the hotel was a nightmare from day one. When we arrived the room was dirty and had not been cleaned from the previous occupancy. We complained about this and the fact that we had a view from the balcony of a brick wall. The receptionist was very helpful and assured us that we would be upgraded at no extra cost, we were moved to an identical but cleaner room with a view from the balcony of a brick... (read more)

Myself and my partner went to The Crown Hotel halfboard for 14 nights. In general the hotel looked rather nice. But there was a constant stale, damp smell in the hotel which made me feel sick!! We arrived at the hotel around 9pm, we were greeted by a man at reception who came across to us as very miserable and unhelpful. Once we found our room we were extremely upset as we were expecting a 4* room! It was on the ground floor in a dark corner next to the cleaners area with no natural day... (read more)

Myself and fiancee went B&B to the Crown Hotel. On arrival to the crown hotel, the general look of it was nice. We were greeted by a member of staff who booked us in. I thought the hotel generally smelt like mould and dampness. Although the cleaners were fabulous and polite no matter how much cleaning they did I found the smell still was unbearable. This Hotel rates itself as 4 star, but in reality is only a 2star, Maltese star rating system is different to ours. Even though the hotel is at the cheaper end of the market, it is not good value for money as the food is so bad that if you are on half board you have to go out to eat to get some descent food.
I would NOT recommend anyone to stay in this hotel, the only reason we did not change hotel ( and several fellow guests did move after complaining) was we were only there for a week and... (read more)

Having read all the reviews on here, myself and my daughter were so worried what we were letting ourselves in for. We bought a Lonely Planet Guide to Malta & Gozo and went fearing the worst. However, this holiday turned out to be a really pleasant and relaxing experience. We were in room 1004 which is actually fairly quiet in the evenings. Having been a frequent visitor to Malta and this area in particular I was very, very let down by the service and facilities of this hotel. It seems to be overrun by students who are supposedly there to learn English and when they come back from school in the afternoons they then run about the corridors shouting and knocking doors. Then at night time, when most sensible people are trying to sleep, they started again. There have been children as young as 13 on these trips and they were... (read more)

Having read the reviews before we went, and reluctantly reassured by Airmiles staff that the reviews I had read were not to believed! We decided to arrive at The Crown with an open mind. The room was small but clean - that was the only good point. A four star hotel in Malta is not what you'd expect in most other countries. However, in relation to some neighbouring hotels, the Crown Hotel wasn't as bad as I'd first thought. The rooms do not have balconies so you rely on noisy air con. The hotel caters for large numbers of students, who ran riot generally. The food was rubbish, there were no snacks available for all inclusive guests and to get an ice cream, it would have been easier to get blood out a stone! The staff are making the... (read more)

We booked into the Crown Hotel over the internet and then found some reviews on another website. Some of these weren't very complimentary so we were apprehensive about going here. We needn't have been. I agree that in Malta 4 star is not necessarily what you would find for the same rating in Tenerife or Spain but the 4 star rating ensured that air conditioning was available in all the rooms and a rooftop swimming pool, which some of the small hotels do not have.

After an eight-hour delay out from Manchester (sorry, but not impressed with Air Malta), we arrived at midday Sunday. Being on B&B terms, we didn't need food from the hotel (see previous reviews) and went out. Five minutes walk and we were on the Bugibba sea front (with more eating places than you can shake a stick at - if you like milk shakes, try "George's" thick ones ... still, back to the Crown).

We arrived at the Crown Hotel in Bugibba at 5am and went straight to our room. The top cover was dirty, and as it was hot we discarded it. The pillows stank of sweat, and we had to have them changed. We were all inclusive, which means drinks and meals in a abundance, so we thought! Going for our evening meal was a nightmare, as the restaurant was always full of students who ate everything in sight, and there was never much left by the time they had gone. Overall, I would not recommend Crown Hotel. My girlfriend and I have stayed in better quality travel lodges! We did not think it was worthy of a 4* rating, there is no way it would attain this in the UK. Our bedroom was not particularly impressive on the ground floor, it backed on to the kitchen, very noisy irate chefs yelling all the time and maids start cleaning at 5.30 in the morning which means you cannot have a lie in. First impression of the Crown Hotel is that it's not in a very nice area, but in all honesty, in my opinion, most of the towns and resort areas are the same. The guide on one of our trips (who was Maltese) explained that the Maltese are very house proud inside but don't (in general) care about what's outside their front door - which explains the litter and dog mess all over the place. Watch your step!

I've stayed in a lot of 4-star hotels around the world and the Crown Hotel one doesn't come close to being what I would call a 4-star hotel.
The Maltese give it a 4-star rating, because it has certain facilities, like a mini-bar in each room, like several bars, like two pools, but the minibars aren't all that special and when they say mini, they aren't kidding.
