“Just two items”

★★★★☆

written by on 26/04/2013

1)Three times in succession an apple juice has produced pulp within the liquid without any indication on the pack. I almost vomited as a result. 2)When I needed a sandwich, I naturally thought Waitrose would be superior. No such luck, the Tuna sandwich was incredibly poor, no mayonnaise, no flavour. Surprising, since I rate Waitrose highly and am a regular and loyal customer. I should just like to add that the range of available merchandise could be increased since the branch (Storrington) is well patronised. S.Y. R. Walsh

“Never had a problem”

★★★★☆

written by on 31/12/2012

The Calibre of their staff is in stark contrast to Tesco's, they're polite and friendly and I like the quality of the food. The layout in Waitrose combined with their quality, makes me want to buy. Also, not everything can be palatable to everyone's taste; with Waitrose, no problem at all, they refund you with a smile and an apology. So I'm happy! :)

“Waitrose has no more integrity than anyone else.”

★★★★☆

written by on 01/09/2012

Others have commented that they are happy to shop at Waitrose even though the shop's claims to be on a par for prices with their rivals is not generally so. If shoppers are happy with that it's fine, at least they are aware of it. I shop at Waitrose sometimes because it is close to other town centre shops I use. I know my bill will be higher. Some time ago there was a lot of publicity in the media about one of the ways supermarkets had found to get richer off unsuspecting shoppers, namely the bulk buy which actually costs you MORE (not even the same but more)than buying the equivalent amount in smaller packs. Since it has always been ingrained in us that the larger the quantity you buy of a product the less it will cost you, and since it is automatic to take the multi-size of a product you use regularly, the supermarkets suddenly saw a neat way of making a killing by quietly inflating prices of many bulk packs before customers cottoned on to it. During that publicity, outraged shoppers submitted dozens of such incidences they were now noticing round their store. What they thought was good housekeeping to save money by buying large packs was actually adding higher prices to their bills. It only needs one company to start such a practice for the others to follow like sheep. I mistakenly thought (as others probably did) that John Lewis would be above this, priding themselves as they do that they have an integrity others don't possess. Alerted at the time, I started doing the mental arithmetic as I shopped in Waitrose and found they have no more integrity than anyone else. I have noticed a number of products where it is cheaper to buy two or more small packs than a large one one that most people think is saving them money. One instance is a six-pack of the kitchen towels I use a lot, having animals. It costs £1.13 more than three packs of two bought separately. Today the manager pointed out a "third off" offer on the two-packs to justify that three of them would cost less than a bulk pack but I pointed out that the six-packs also had the "third off" ticket but were still priced at £4.59 instead of the total of three two-packs (£3.36). On the previous occasions I have asked about the discrepancy of price on this product there has been no pretence at any "offers". They simply checked and said the price was correct. Today the manager said the "third off" ticket on the large packs was meant to refer to the product on the shelf above, a different brand. An answer for everything it seems. Previously I also found it cheaper to buy two standard packs of a washing powder instead of the large size but these have since been relaunched in new packaging. A large size is no longer exactly twice the weight of a standard pack making it more difficult to work out a comparison (even if we had the time) which I expect is the whole idea. As I said I do shop at Waitrose but I am under no illusions that they are as good as they once were; don't touch the "home-ripen" fruit for example,it never does and you will throw it away as hard and sour as when you bought it. I can't remember when I had a sweet juicy orange either - dry and pithy seems to be the norm. Look on the bright side though; they make a nice pot of tea and I like that little biscuit they still provide with it.

“Frozen Smoothie Mix - Strawberry and Banana”

★★★★☆

written by HeatherKirsty on 08/05/2012

The first time ever not completely satisfied with Waitrose. Beautiful tasting strawberries (eaten with yoghurt), however, I had to throw out the banana slices because they looked a bit slimy and were black in the middle. Another fruit with the strawberries would have worked well -blueberries perhaps or pineapple (they both freeze and defrost well). Heather

a very good store, i realied that like rival booths it had a more upamrket approach, it is very clean, equipped and the quality is very good, the choice is obviously not as good as my usual, bilston morrisons, i guess they have all the essentials plus more. love their new essential range, meaning that it can hunt down the likes of morrisons and attract people like me, and also, unlike the bosses of tesco, they have a dedication to food aswell, employing chefs like heston and delia to show you real meals, rather than slobs looking for the frozen processed junk. so overall it is good. their new motorway stores are very handy too.

I do my weekly shopping at Waitrose and i am very happy with the whole experience. First thing the aisles are large and bright and you don't have to fight with the other customers to get through and that saves me a nervous break down. The quality of fresh meat, fish and veggies is superior compared to other supermarkets (only M&S can stand the comparison with Waitrose). True, it is more expensive but after shopping at Waitrose for around 4 years I could never go back to Tesco. The only downside is that their ready meals are a little underseasoned for my taste but generally i shop for fresh products. You can also sign up for their credit card and accumulate points that are converted into vouchers.

Waitrose is great for couples, most of their ready meals and easy to cook items are genially for two.
You will find you save money instead of home cooking which can cost a bit for all ingredients.
If like me you are busy and are not a ready meal kinda girl! yuck!
Waitrose meals are like home made meals are are a delight to eat.
Well worth it! Also the fruit and veg is excellent, many a time i have purchased fruit and veg which has gone off days later from other super markets asda is terrible for this.
Also It is a real delight to potter down the aisles without being barged into, or waiting for that little old lady to shift out the way.
Looking forward to next week's shop already!

Its a good supermaket. Its food remind home made food which is a definite bonus. Shop layout is friendly and far away from Morrison like. Products quality is good and I had never had a problem nor any complaints. Whats really makes Waitrose stand out is its staff. Always helpful, smiled and caring. I have been sung 'Happy Birthday' by staff member while I was buying my birthday cake. What a highlight. One bad thing, as Waitrose has its range of products 'Matches TESCO price' it does not always charge you right money at the till so be careful. It sells RedBulls two for 0.99 which has not been yet beaten by any retailer. Well done!

Overall Id say waitrose is a great supermarket. I go to the one in Richmond, Surrey and its light, airy and you dont find yourself whacking into other shoppers as the aisles are quite wide.

The choice of food is pretty good too - Id say still fractionally behind the quality of M&S in certain areas - but overall its one of the best.

Its a bit pricey, but if you're looking for a good supermarket id recommend it

Shop always spotless. Staff very polite. Goods have a long shelf life very important when living alone. I think they are getting a bit more competitive which i found very good.
Shopping at Waitrose is always a pleasure. I enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the restaurant while waiting for my lift home.

written by RodatAlston on 01/09/2008

I'm a big fan of the John Lewis partnership and Waitrose is a good example of what makes them so good. I love the fact that I rarely have to queue at the checkout, that the staff will go out of the way to help and always offer assistance with packing and that the quality of the food is always good. (When I did buy something that went 'off' before it's sell by date, I was given a replacement without a quibble on the basis of my word alone).

When I've talked to staff at Waitrose they have always told me that Waitrose is a good company to work for and I think that's probably reflected in the staff's attitude to customers and the excellent customer service you get. Of course it must help that they have a stake in the business.

written by degbert on 06/06/2007

They are more expensive. And only half of that can be claimed to be ethically-sourced-based costs, which half the time is a bit of a nonsense, as there are still African and South American products all over the place.

And, certainly the Waitrose store that I go to, the choice is not on a par with the huge megastores that the market leaders can afford to build and run.

But I think we have to consider other things also -

Quality of Service. Staff in Waitrose actually greet you and apologise for your wait, and appear like you could have a conversation with them without it being a major trauma for them intellectually.

Quality of Choice. Not 'amount' of choice, but quality of choice. The selections are good, especially some of the wine, but also some of the food bits.

Convenience/Location. Ours is accessible as any of the others, and to be honest there is not the mad scramble or stress of trying to find a car parking space as there is in the big supermarkets. Those places have to get people in by the truckload, and therefore the whole thing is not an enjoyable experience; it's a chore and a pain, and you are surrounded by screaming kids and people who don't want to be there. Waitrose, in comparison, is just more civilised.

With this in mind, a couple more quid on the shop is OK, and that's not to say I use the place exclusively anyway; the retail Leviathans get my money too, inevitably. I'm just saying that it deserves credit for what it does, and if you can see past the price issue then you'd realise you're getting more for your pound of spuds than just a pound of spuds (probably Jersey New, admittedly).

If you can go back home with the week's shop without having once wanted to throttle someone while shopping, then that's worth a few pence more I think. Waitrose gives you that option.

Waitrose has something called the Waitrose Foundation to support and improve the lives of South African farm workers who grow and pick their citrus fruit, mangoes, grapes, avocadoes and stone fruit. This may explain some of the produce of African origin. It's kind of like Fairtrade. Good review.
