“Dont Buy Anything in Waitrose with a date code on it. ”

Written on: 29/04/2013 by GreenK

I did my weekend family shop in Waitrose Okehampton on Friday 26th . Part of the shop was a large chicken for Sunday lunch with friends . On Sunday I opened the chicken to find it was off. Stinking in fact. I looked at the packaging which said use by the 26th. I don't think it is unreasonable to buy a chicken at 5pm on Friday and still be able to cook it on Sunday lunchtime - Waitrose do . I expected the manager to completely apologetic - not one bit of it. We all know oversights happen-... (read more)

“Like a Maze!”

Written on: 27/04/2013

I recently visited the Waitrose located in Buckhurst hill, I didnt have a bad experience all in all but the Stores layout wasnt very nice, the Isles weren't to big which meant taht only 1 or 2 trolleys could squeeze past each other, the store was sectioned out in quite an odd way (for example cleaning materials just slung inbetween the bread and cereals) to be honest just a maze, found myself looking around for 30 minutes just to find some window clener! also the store was very big and each... “Just two items”

Written on: 26/04/2013

1)Three times in succession an apple juice has produced pulp within the liquid without any indication on the pack. I almost vomited as a result. 2)When I needed a sandwich, I naturally thought Waitrose would be superior. No such luck, the Tuna sandwich was incredibly poor, no mayonnaise, no flavour. Surprising, since I rate Waitrose highly and am a regular and loyal customer. I should just like to add that the range of available merchandise could be increased since the branch (Storrington)... I shop on line as I have a severely disabled husband. Recently my husband had another stroke and we had to be at the hospital at the time of my grocery delivery. I phoned the store and they told me not to worry and they would phone back in a few minutes. When they phoned back it was to say that they had picked my order and it was on it's way - four hours ahead of my delivery slot. It is a half hour drive from the store to my home. “Appalling and unreliable delivery”

Written on: 07/04/2013 by Juliauk

I have had an appalling experience with online delivery from Waitrose. The worst thing is a complete lack of interest in apologising or rectifying a situation. I have been a regular Waitrose customer and love their products. However when experiencing a new driver, twice he left half my groceries in the van before driving off. Complaints to the customer service line the first time led to a phone call and a reluctant return of the driver at an unspecified time over 4 hours later (which he was... (read more)

Waitrose For God's Sake. 1. I am not stupid. Fairtrade Loose Bananas 79p a kilo - Fairtrade 'bag packaged ' bananas about 200p per kilo. 3X THE PRICE. Rip-Off naughty. 2. If the aisles are so narrow WHY do you insist on filling them with staff and restocking trolleys at peak times ? 3. Are you running a youth employment scheme ?. I sometimes trip over surplus staff. Commendable but stupid ( and who's paying for it?) 4. Wed have all learned from Tesco's when is a 'bargain not a bargain'... (read more)

Dandydo's Response to MuppetandChums's Review

Written on: 01/04/2013

1) Waitrose make no profit on bananas. They make a loss. That's what fairtrade is. Whilst you complain in your egotistical first-world class snobery, people in Africa are benefiting from them. Go **** yourself and spend those dear pennies you want to save elsewhere.

2) Because at peak times, stock goes quickly. If there's nobody there to restock, then the shelves will be empty. Then you'll complain with that. Learn to freaking wait or bog of elsewhere.

3) Those youths will hopefully end up contributing far more to the world than ending up as losers writing petty complaints online.

4) That's great.

5) No.

“Friendly, but entirely unreliable”

Experience from two online orders: first delivery took three attempts to work out, the second worked after two tries, but a third of the delivery items were "out of stock." We're not talking canned dolphin tears - we're talking Coca Cola and water. I was very unimpressed. Staff in the call center are helpful and respectful, but a particular problem seem to be the drivers. One doesn't show up and doesn't even bother to call. Written on: 27/02/2013 by JPJPJP (1 review written)

The manager/director of this store has a very crude method for implementing monitoring and security procedures. On the occasions that I visited the store, an overzealous staff (or the manager/director himself) would tail me as if I will shoplift something. It is extremely uncomfortable, verging on insulting. Overpriced and over rated. I have often picked up items which are to be used that day, still the full price but now I have learnt to look at the dates closely. We have bought pear and almond slices recently where the pastry bottom layer was raw. Pretty poor. “Waitrose Beckenham Store”

Written on: 25/02/2013

I have waited until I got used to the new layout thinking I may get used to it. But the few times I now shop there remind me why I do not want to shop there any more. They crammed the whole shop of items into a far smaller area, so they could accommodate a very large homewares department. Why, when we have access to such items in other shops in Beckenham and Bromley close by? It seems to me like a greedy grab for every penny. I seldom see anyone shopping in that area. Biskit47's Comment

Written on: 25/02/2013

This sums up myself and my wife's thoughts exactly. BUT there is more. For a very long time (a couple of years?) there has been a very annoying incidence of "someone" putting items from one shelf to another location. IE. sausages put in the ice-cream freezer. Lately it has been manic. We have told the staff and management in person on this situation, but there is no change. Also shelves are dirty (wipe finger on to shelf of drinks rack !!) Loose rice and pasta not cleaned despite manager being shown these neglected areas.
For a company that is owned by it's staff, I'm at a loss to understand Beckenham's branche's attitude of lack of care to customer complaints and cleanliness of it's shelves.

“Parma ham with metal garnish”

Written on: 09/11/2012 by jrussell88 (2 reviews written)

I sometimes buy parma ham from Waitrose's deli counter. In every other shop or market stall where I buy this type of ham, no discussion is required; the ham is de-rinded, and laid out neatly in overlapping layers separated by cellophane or greaseproof paper. Getting the right thickness is a trial and error process which often results in ham shredded so finely that it sticks together in a greasy mass which cannot be separated. I was given a refund and nothing else. I take your point, but I have found that "use by" dates are sometimes too conservative, such as for yoghurts and cheeses. Fish and poultry carry more risks, but I am wondering if a day outside would make much difference. However, you are right that the chicken should have been reduced in price as it was sold on the "use by" date. This may have been a mistake by Waitrose as I have found their sell-by/use-by control system excellent - as is the quality of their produce. In France (Monoprix) I have not infrequently come across produce on the shelves beyond the use-by dates.

This is an extaordinary review. I love shopping at Waitrose Newton Mearns and the main reason for this is the fantastic, friendly, helpful staff there. I shop there at least once a week and the staff remember us and are always helpful and are very tolerant when my v small children can be loud and running through the aisles. It's the only place besides the local butcher I will buy meat from - beautiful quality even after it's been frozen. When stuff is on the use by date it is significantly marked down - unlike at most other supermarkets where you only get a tiny bit off. Other products are competitive and even often cheaper - it depends what you are buying. I used to think it must be more expensive, but was at Morrisons the other day and ended up putting back a load of stuff as I remembered it was cheaper at Waitrose. I have never, ever had a problem parking and I never have a problem with the shelves being empty.
I cannot comment on delivery as I've never had it delivered.

“Pathetic, annoying, waste of time.”

Don't bother with Waitrose on line, they don't arrive. I spent hours navigating a clumsy website, placed my first order, a relatively large one, a few hundred pounds, and they have just not arrived. I live in a small village within the M25, it is from the local Waitrose, our address cannot be hard to find. Ocado all the way - their delivery is fabulous, their sell by dates brilliant, their flowers beautifully packed. I have no idea why I changed. (read more)

“Disastrous ”

On the 10 th of November I placed an order on line with Waitrose to be delivered on the 23rd December between 11am and 1pm. The shopping was delivered at almost 3pm, which normally I would accept, but when the driver brought all the bags into the hall he informed me that there was a problem and would I like to check through all the shopping and sort out what I wanted and didn't want, this took us ages, as it was about 6 weeks since I had placed the order, I could hardly remember what I had... “Shocking customer service and delivery services”

Written on: 01/02/2012 by KPKP1 (1 review written)

I did my monthly online shop at Waitrose this previous month, as I do every month. The delivery truck arrived within my delivery shop and the driver offloaded all my packets from the truck to my kitchen and informed me of the 2 sustitution which were made, which I was happy with so signed the delivery note and off he went. I then proceeded to unpack the contents of my packets and tick off the items on my list. To my surprise I came across a number of bags containing items which I had not... (read more)

“Avoid Clapham Jucntion branch -Waitrose no longer...”

Written on: 04/01/2012

Clapham Junction branch must be at the bottom end of the Waitrose stack - the only friendly/helpful staff are the ex Wandsworth branch employees. I often use Wandsworth & to a lesser extent Kingston & Byres Road stores & have no problem there. During my shopping I had to ask 2 managers to move with a polite "Excuse Me" & was initially ignored...on the 3rd they moved by no apology/acknowledgement. I asked the bakety department for a particular brand of French Sourdough bread which is... (read more)
