My Nova SRI is the best thing that has ever graced itself on my life. Although she no longer runs due to a bad day on the M62, i still have my beast in full view for all to see on my drive. I am currently looking for another Nova, preferably a GSI or GTE, but its hard to come across one in good condition as the chavs love to cut holes in them for their large chunks of plastic they stick on.

The cars are fairly reliable for their age, still managed to anihilate any Corsa's or Saxo's i came… Read Full Review

you can use an ecu with a carb actually, if you are using stand-alone spark management. I had an nova sr with twin 40 carbs and a cavalier 1.6 ecu and wiring harness to manage the spark/advance.

okay then HNC boy, tell me in engineering terms exactly how a 1.4 engine on carbs can be as powerful as a 1.6 turbocharged engine (RS turbo, 130bhp) with multi point injection? ive been workin on cars since I was 14 and know from experience that twin 40s are\'nt the equal of an injection system, and without a hell of a lot of trickery your average nova sr cant keep up with an xr3i, xr2, or any xr for that matter. oh, and how fast did you get to up the pod? that\'s superbike territory, that speed.

Nope. I know nothing about headflow, The 5 elements of an engine cycle, the differences between multivalve and 2 valve heads and their effects, torque and power curves, gear ratios, final drive, power to weight ratio, wheel sizes and tyres sizes, suspension, the direness of standard equipment speedos, the effciency of carbs, port matching, blueprinting, The average standard of head and engine work, cam timing and the effects of duration and lift, etc, etc i could go on all day. A nova is virtually the same weight as the various MK2 fiesta models and other small cars of that period.

I have a nova 1.4sr MK2, it has done 62k it has a piper cam, carb, 4 branch and stainless system and i can tell you that your 1.4sr has not done 130mph and runnin 135bhp with jus carbs, as for 1. the gearbox will only go to about 116mph as i have the same gearbox on mine and i have a digi dash and 2. the carbs will only take it up to about 90 - 95bhp, so come on when you say all this rubbish bout doin 130mph on a 1.4 sr standard with carbs your just making novas and their drivers look like idiots

my 1400 sr might only have a bolt on K&N and full performance exhaust including manifold, but its quick. im not quoting figures coz i dont know any, but i know its quick enough to scare the average driver in quite a few cars. also i know that when my speedo says 120 im probably doing around 110, which is about what the book says for an sr anyway

Are these top speeds being quoted done with pro timing gear or are you going by the dials? Because I cant see how a 1.4 sr is going to do those kinds of speeds. I had a 1600 escort and the speedo said I was doin 120 mph but I bet I wasnt even at 115.

You are also forgetting about the driver just because someone has got an RX7 doesn't mean they know how to drive it!

The SR is light with a 1.4 engine you can get a decent output and the gearing is pretty low so yes they are quick but if you yourself drove an RX7 and recorded the time and then i'm pretty sure it would be quicker than the nova.

Just accept the fact that the nova does what it does well and your input as a driver is just as much responsible for your wins as the car itself.

As for tappy XR2s and 3s. mine is 20 years old and doesn't tap. Only people who don't look after their CVH or accept the fact that the camshaft is best changed every couple of years have to put up with tap. I've heard plenty of tappy vauxhalls ;) and they have no excuse they don't have to endure the large valve spring loading in the CVH.

I can see there are loads of arguments here, apart from all of the above mentioned points on the limitations of a 1.482 hp engine upgraded with twin 40's only as a suspect claim of 135hp
look at the claimed Santapod speed 132mph! I went santa pod last augsut and a guy called stuart ran 123 in a 330 hp green mini!
nuff said eh!

Nah nah nah well done geezer, me an my mates run a sort of vauxhall appreciation club and we jus wanna say 'done well'. All 6 of us have owned at least 4 nova's, ranging from 1.2 stars to 1.6 GTEs and GSIs and I don't care what anyone says about thier tappy xr2s and thier 'mechanically sound' xr3is. I had a 1.4 luxe, J reg, only engine mod was a 1.6 carb and a 1.6 fuel system stolen from a GTE. It went like crazy, I swear down I beat 2 mazda rx7s at the same time. You don't have to believe me, I'm sure you don't, but both drivers thought I had a 2 litre 16 valve conversion in a 5 door! Done well geezer from the nova boys.

135bhp from a 1.4 is only possible with head work cams and twin dcoes and then you'd be lucky to get that!!

I like the way you compare your tuned to car to standard ford cars!!

I'll go and stick a set of forties on my XR2 and we'll see what happens!

There are a lot of people claiming a lot of stuff which just isn't possible!

Was that a rolling road figure? What was the wheel output? rolling road comapanies have a habit of adding huge amounts for transmission loses.

A standard injection will not out do a twin DCOE setup. Injection systems are limted unless upgraded and early ones can't even handle an air filter change.

A 1600cvh with a ported head, cvh33 cam and twin dcoes will make 135bhp so how the hell did you do it with a 1400 standard engine and twin carbs!!!

I've had 3 xr3i's and two nova 1.4sr's and I hate to say this as I have an sr now but the xr3's I had would have the edge on all sr's I owened. The sr I have now has webster twin 40's with a k&n filter and full s.s janspeed, so no excuse....the hairdresser car wins unfortunatly...respect. Saying that, I also had a nova 1.5turbo diesel that seriously kicked both cars arses until the timing belt went, guess I should have checked the service record ,eh....wot a great car that was. You seem to forget the part that involves the driver! Trust me if you race a standard XR3i or XR3 against a nova SR around a track with the same driver the nova would not be quicker!

I saw an article involving a GTti, Nova GTE and an XR2. The XR2 had the lowest top speed and was the slowest to 60 but pulled the best time round the track!!

The SR is a good car because it is light with a decent suspension setup and has a decent amount of power but racing it against fords that are probably on their last legs with a rubbish driver is not a way to prove your car is faster!

Christ I can have 2.5 GSI vectras and such with my XR2 with an average driver in them. I know damn well if the driver knew what they were doing I would definitely not beat them on a straight! The determination on their faces they have to be doing something wrong! I've only got 96 bhp tops with my 34DMTR at the flywheel!

For the record to work out your flywheel figure on a front wheel drive car you take the wheel figure add 10 and divide by 0.9!

You'll probably find your rolling road dude has been lying to you and your car needs some serious sorting!

As for speedos ignore them mine is at least 8mph out at 100mph. Use your gear ratios and rev counter to work out your speed. Even thats not that accurate but more so than the speedos that tell people there doing 130!

I had 121 from my lean burn XR2 on the flat according the clock! yeah right! probably closer to 110 maybe 115 if a gale force wind was behind me!

The Nova SR is a beast in standard form but you can easily make this into a dream car to rival anything on the road. As standard my car could keep up with XR2I's and 205 GTi's but after a peco big bore exhaust I could easily beat R5 GT Turbo's, I quickly made my killer mod which is a sun strip that covers half of my window coupled with a baseball cap when I drive! now my beast is a match for any Cosworth, Subaru or Evo!!! The Vauxhall NOVA is in its own class, when I was 17-18 it was the car to have. Now its dated, an old style car if you will. I will admit that it blew up later that evening but the moral of all this story is it is possible for 1.4sr nova to fill the clock

I own a Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 16v Sport (V reg). It does 0-60 in 10.5 secs. Thats whats published figures are and thats what it does! Have done it myself with one other in the car. My corsa is completely standard. My point is that a 1.4 SR Nova with mods can easily do 0-60 mph in 10.5 Fibermide clearly don't know what he's talking about.
1001 bhp,0-60 10.5 seconds

130LB/ft!!! try running 2" from the turbo for at least 100cm pipe length then a simple small box then do 3"for the rest, watch the torque go through the roof and use that, might mean you have to learn to drive on torque rather than off the red line but you'll be quicker.

Rite boyz, handbags at 5 please.

Me and my bro built a 1.7 turbo diesel Nova, transplanted the engine from the cav td.
Turned the boost up to 22psi, matched the fueling to the boost, full 3" straight through system from the turbo back, no boxes!, flashing marks in head removed, steel head gasket, raised the comp ration (head skimmed 7 thou!) 1.5d flywheel (considerably lighter than the 1.7 one)(allows it to rev faster and harder).
When this car was dyno'd it had a bad overheating problem (later sourced to a cylinder head that was split in at least 5 places, boost related).
It hit 110bhp and 130lbs torque, max power was hit at 97mph in 4th on the dyno (no realistic rpm figures because rr was not capable of giving the diesel a rev counter that worked) but was well over the 6000rpm red line on the car!
this car kept with std rst's and some 205 gti's but it never handled well! too heavy on the front!.

We hit 120mph along side my mates rst and also a few more times playing with things like 2.0l vtec preludes, r5gtt's, etc etc.
With the new head it was considerably faster, but now its sold so no power figures sorry.
But saying Nova 1.4 sr's are quicker than 1.9 205 gti's! get real, my bros td only just kept with them!
Oh and the 0-60 time of the nova was high 7's.

Damn, what the hell are you Nova boys talking about, the Nova sr is an ok boy racer car, but in the real world it`s not very fast, i`ve driven about 70 cars since I passed my test from an 850 mini to a Sierra Cosworth and to be fair, there are loads of normal family cars, even turbo diesels that can eat a Nova SR or GSi for breakfast.
These cars are for young boys who have never driven anything fast, I mean sr 0-60 in 10.5,lol, whats the 0-100, does it even get that far, lol.

Lets Clear up a few little comments, Digi dashes use the same sensors/drives as analogue dials. As a result about 15% out at top 125mph = 106.25mph.

Second, The peugeot is more aero efficient than the nova and so the torque v's drag ratio would probably never let it get near that.

Third, Handling wise novas are flawed, even with help from mr proflex/spax and friends they are not a touch on a pug at the the limit, notice I said limit, not being flug with gay abandon down a country lane at stupid speeds (even then the peugeot would be past you and coping better). You see the french have this ability to look at weight distribrution, key to handling, whereas the nova was design for commuting.

I agree that they can become fun and chuckale and have had their own motorsport sucess. But realism really should hit home.

p.s. I owned an SR
p.s.s I owned a skoda felicia 1.3 (55bhp) I was able to cover B roads quicker in that than the sr.

At the end of the day, it is a proven fact that front wheel drive cars are not supposed to have more than 200bhp. Which is quite good for a little cars such as Novas Metros fiestas etc. and it will do a half decent quarter mile. But put a 200 bhp Fiesta or Nova, against my 200bhp mk2 Escort where it matters, on a track, or on the road. Then see who comes off in front. Im not claiming I can get 140 out of a 200bhp car, brcause I can't, so if I cant do that, then how is it possible that you can get it out af a 70bhp tin can? at the end of the days, Fords are better than vauxhalls, and old Fords are better than new Fords.

With old engine technology the holy grail was 100 bhp per litre. If you tuned your 1.4 with about 5 grand you might get 140 bhp. With your K and N and powerflow you will lose power unless its rolling road tuned. It might sound faster but in truth its not.

Look at areodynamics too. The Nova is a brick just like the series one RS Turbo. That car needs a good 135 bhp to hit 12omph! With a following wind too!

If you had the 16 valve 2 litre then I might believe that your car would do 120... And in that case the speedo would be about 150 mph and you would start to say your Nova is faster than a TVR... hehe

On what evidence do you base the fact that 205's are rubbish??? They are faster, handle better, look far more modern and don't rust to pieces. Look at the FACTS rather than your own personal opinion.

Agreed the Nova is a decent small old hatchback (or even the saloon), but a performance car or 'HOT HATCH' it certainly was not.

RE Lameboy:
Note earlier statements that the speedo does not read correctly at those sort of speeds. thats a fact.
the 1.3SR has approx 70bhp if i'm not mistaken... for god sake lads my mum could beat u in her Polo with a boot full of shopping!!

I think you need to wake up to the fact that the Nova 1.3 SR IS NOT A SPORTY CAR!!! The most pwerful engine Vauxhall Put it in was a 1.6l 100bhp engine. Okay so some of you put 2.0l 16v Red Tops in but the car just falls apart around it. AND THAT'S NO JOKE. The Vauxhall Nova was never meant to be a performance car!

I would be more than happy to arrange a meeting between a 205 gti (1.6 OR 1.9 gti) and a nova 1.3 sr.. and sri or even a Gsi/Gte and i remain happy in the knowledge that the 205 will win either round a track or on a drag strip... you only need to look at the papers for that!!!

Also strut bars are in plays and brakes have been upgraded so the handling perfect just needs the power now. I'm now looking for modifying it has a race exhaust and induction kit but I want bigger power without getting a new engine any ideas would be a great help.

As much as you hectors amuse me with your Magnex exhausts and K n N filters, you're not really accomplishing anything much to speak of. If I can suggest some reading material that should save you having to get into discussions about how fast a Nova/XR2 goes when its got a tail pipe the size of part of the London sewage system. Buy yourself "How to build Horsepower" by Davis Visard. Unfortunately I haven't written a book yet but this should give you the very basics of how engines work and what contributes to them producing power. I wish you all luck with what ever Jallopy you chose to drive.

And to be honest all these 0-60 times don't mean anything if the driver just can't drive, take for instance me and my friend smoked a XR3i Escort in a 1.0 Micra off the lights due to my friend just being a better driver, there's no doubt the Escort had more torque and power and but hey, alls fair in love and war!!!

Nova = Marmite... you either love them or you hate them. I can understand people hating these cars (all my mates) because lets face it, even the top model isn't that quick in standard form. But with a few engine mods, new suspension, a small amount of cosmetics and possibly a rear disc conversion you will have a car that performs on a par with a modded VTR (and looks as good in my opinion)! Although there's one clear reason why I would have the nova over ANY VTR.... and that's CHARACTER. Nova has truck loads, Saxo has none. Nova 1-0 Saxo.

Agree with Novaspec. I own 2 motors, one of which is an mk2 1.4 Astra special ed. It has a similar tune up to Novaspec's motor with addition of re-bore and skimming. Does 0-62mph in 9.5secs and top end 116+mph. These smaller vaux engines are very tuneable. Check out the 1.3 Nova Sport!

I have a 1400 SR Nova with Kent Cam, Alloy Pulley, Lightened Flywheel, 32/34 TLDE Twin-Choke Weber (modded from a Tipo), 4-1 Sport Manifold and Magnex S/Steel System. It whips VTR/S's, Corsa's, XR2's and XR3's. I have 168BHP at the flywheel, about 120BHP at the wheels.
Novas may be old technology and very basic & cheap, but that dont mean they cant cut the ice. My 0-60 time, recorded at Silverstone, is 8.92s. My 1/4 mile sprint is 12.64s @ 113MPH.

Sorry to be the party wrecker again, but I think your nova isn't as standard as you think, surely if someone has gone to all that time and effort on the anchors that means the engine isn't exactly standard , and by the relative performance your suggesting I belive it could be the case. 1, check the block codes (haynes manual) make sure someone hasn't already done an engine swap to a 1.6/8 ohc lump. 2, the engine could do with a strip after 10 years of service get a trusted mechanic to look at it tell you if its standard, bore, stroke, valve sizes, cam duration etc, don't do this at the same time as asking for an upgrade 'cos if it is modded, they'll fleece you and say they spent a days, when they checked and it took a hour or 2. 3, don't bother with the engine swap. The car will be undriveable close to the limit, torque steer will break your thumbs and there cheaper more reliable faster cars out there.

As a proud Nova owner I must put my veiws out to the rest of the world. It all started when I was 15, my mate bought a B plate 13SR with a worn cam shaft. He fitted a fast road kent cam and skimmed the head and flowed the ports, the words pocket rocket spring to my mind!.
Six months later I bought it off him and soon fitted a Janspeed 4 branch manifold. I saw off a volvo 440 turbo and many other 1600s and 2000 sadly it failed its MOT due to Nova rott. I then had a Peugeot 106, change the subject quick! french rubbish. Then I bought my G plate 14 SR , I hate to tell you XR2I boys I saw one off down the city bypass in my standard 14SR at 124MPH not a happy Fiesta owner let me tell you! Dont get me wrong my other car is a MK1 xr2 with a 167bhp 7500rpm twin 40 screamer.
My brother owns a single seat Vauxhall Lotus with over 250 bhp and weighs 550 kg thrilling but the Nova rules so all you little Corsa neds get a grip, the Nova still kicks butt!
Sadly my G plate failed its MOT, more holes than a tetley tea bag, so I bought a 1 litre merit and simply swapped just about every working part from the SR in 23 hours. Its now stripped to the max no interior ready for sprints and hill climbs long live the Nova!

Point taken. but the extra money does buy a hell of lot of performance, I was simply making the point that there are better cars to benchmark a tuned motor against. The someone said their 1.4 SR was keepin a 1.6 vtec id have to take my hat off to them. Why not go down to a rwyb @ santa pod? Take some tools - try different ajustments between each run. At least that way your sure of a fair race, I.E both drivers paying attention and very similar driving conditions.

yes but your talking about a jap motor which has absolutely nothing to do with the fords/vauxhalls and you would have to re-mortgage your house to tune it. a calibra turbo or cossie would obliterate your jap motor. with regards to the nova sr I once owned a peugeot 106 1.1 which would sit on an sr nova's bumper all day long, so an sr wouldnt stand a chance against an xr2 (a wicked little car) let alone an xr2i. a nova gte is a different matter though, i must admit. and just for the record as strange as it seems xr2is with cvh engines are no slower than those with 1800 16valvers, as early zetecs were a bit poo really

This whole comment thread has me in tears!

I'll admit you did start off with some 'reasonably' credible claims.
A 1.4 Vauxhall engine with DMTR carb would probably closely match the performance of a standard XR2/XR2i. (The DMTR is a fantastic cab that can fuel almost as well as a pair of 40s when correctly setup and the Vauxhall lumps do rev very well).
However, I regulary do ('do' as-in fly past with ease) standard Nova SRs and SRIs in my 1.6s Fiesta which is basically a 2i with a rubbish mk2 XR2 carb.

The point at which your argument becomes totaly laughable is when you say it'll see off RS Turbos and GTE Astras.
The mathematics just don't add up. A GTE and RST are pretty much capable of the same performance - which is high enough to reduce your Nova to a tiny spec on the horizon.
You're looking at cars with around 130bhp against a nova, probably pushing out around 90bhp if you're lucky, with the mods you have.

The 'Honda' guy has the right idea but misses the point a little. The point being money - he may have spent a lot on the Nova but it was spent over time and its cheap to insure. Even an old CRX is gonna cost £2000+ and a small mortgage to insure, unless you're over 50!

Hi, just to add my 2 pence worth. Vauxhalls are quite quick, I think fords have more power but are heavier. So there may not be that much difference between them with regard to "at the wheels" power per tonne. If you talking about racing off the line, you have to take into account driver reaction , condition of the road etc. However id like to see you race a standard CRX Vtec - 163Bhp. It took a nova with over £4000 spent on the engine (1600 block, race cam, throttle bodies) to keep up with a standard 155 BHP civic VTi - lesson to all. if your going to build fast car (any 1.6 that will do 140 MPH is worth a look) - start with a fast one in the fast place. i wouldn't bother tuning anything less that a 1600 because you can't muster the torque to match and all that power you spent your wages on

Hello Villers, and readers, Well what can I say, Except, That the Corsa SRI is a great car. I have spent over £2,000 in Engine mods as well as little bits and bobs, and I recon (not proven, on a rolling road) That my Corsa has got about 125-130 BHP. Considering that it only had about 90 BHP standard, this car can move quickly, with having an FSE boost valve fitted this takes my fuel in a bigger way,w hich benifits the overall revs top end, but can and has damaged spark plugs,if theres more fuel in the cylinders (so my boyfriend tells me) its going to generate more heat in the head, this is where the 4 branch manifold comes in. The standard one cracked due to the heat, and there is room for improvment on fitting a stronger head in the future?
After the mods had run in,(the cam) I noticed a really great difference in overall proformance.
I would recommend a Corsa SRI to anyone, all the works cheep to do, well my boyfriend has done some of the work, except the cam and chip, which was fitted by Collins Proformance. I know theres lots of respectful 16valve owners like your self villers and other readers, which I respect and are very worthy of there mods indeedy, I concentrated on my insurance payments when my driving started with various small cars, fiestas fiat uno and panda, and my sadly missed Astra 1.3s,which gave me a good no claims, and my insurance is very reasonable now, and I guess im just happy that I can spend money on my car, which once upon a time I used to spend on my insurance, and every performance car driver knows what a kick in the teeth that is when your under 25 years of age, thanks for reading and take care of yourselves, its a jungle out there.
all the best,Emmalee

Hi i have a Nova Gsi with stainless exhaust and K&N air filter, i have released the air intake valve, allowing more air into the engine aswell as increasing the fueling, i have also removed the wedge in the throttle and replaced the nylon bushing. I would estimate the car to be doing 0-60 in about 8.5 seconds. GSi's are much quicker than XR2's (1.6 8 valve) but fall short of XR2's (1.8 16 valve) as much as i hate to admit it (and i am doing something about it).

i have the same car a 1.4 sr and i have what i presume is the same carb this lads put on 32/34 dtml as thats the only weber thatl bolt straight on as a replacement. the original carb spec on the 1.4sr is a peiburg 2e3 and there pants. By changing to the weber and a high lift cam mine is rolling roaded at 105 bhp which is pretty similair to the gte or gsi novas which will get to 60 in around 9 flat. So if u look at that then there shouldnt be much difference between nova with said mods and an xr2. Ive never raced 1 tho so i cudnt tell ya if i could keep up or not. Twin weber 40s will make them leave any fiesta though as my mate had 1 and it was unreal. only got bout 15 mpg tho lol.

The official 0-60 time of a 1.4 SR is 12 seconds, maybe 11 on a good day. The XR2i is around 9. You have about 74-80bhp, and the XR2i had 102ish. His car was destroyed mate. Also I'm not sure a turbo cam will work in a carbed car...? Should have a different profile!

SR does not stand for SPORT.. for a deal blast I'd advise you get something along the lines of a 1.6 / 1.9 205.. or if you're brave enough a nissan 200sx. ;)
