I took out pet insurance for my 2 year old cat in April. I was in Sainsbury's buying pet food and toys and saw a leaflet advertising pet insurance. As they are a recognised brand I trusted them to be honest and deliver good value for money. The day before yesterday I visited the vets to have him microchipped, given a booster flu jab and so registered him with them and discussed my cat's bad breath. He had been off his food for a day, which is highly unusual but I assumed it was the noisy fireworks - they really bother him. He had resumed eating and was happy enough - he is a very affectionate, active cat. However, the vet looked into his mouth and said he had chronic gingivitis and may have to have teeth removed. I was shocked as I had expected her to prescribe a dental hygiene regime and some special toothpaste. She asked me to bring him in the next morning so he could be anaesthetised and examined. Well, I had brought along my pet insurance documents in any case and she checked over the policy document. She said I should be covered. Luckily, I rang and yes, customer service confirmed this, though there was a £200 excess. The vet said that was disgusting. She pointed out that I was paying an average sum and getting a very poor deal - she said categorically that it was disgusting and I should cancel as the yearly limit was very low as well. I do wish I hadn't trusted the brand and the sales chap and had shopped around and indeed haggled. Buyer beware - that's what they say. I phoned to complain all they did was try to get me to fork out for their more expensive option. What a cheek!

Ive had my dog insured with sainsburys since 2004 when he was a puppy. The first year cost me just under ten pounds which increased slightly each year, which you would expect however last year it went to seventeen pound odd and just received latest increase which is now not far off thirty pound. Ive rung the customer service line and told yet again its because of breed/age/location of dog. I wouldnt mind a small increase every now and then but with currant times I just can't afford this and I fe ...

I made a claim when my cat needed expensive out-of-hours treatment for a nasty urinary infection. Sainsbury's PetCare Pet Insurance did everything they could to try and get out of paying out a relatively small amount for a very straightforward claim and I was told repeated lies by their customer service staff - most amusingly was told on a Friday that the guy I was speaking to had personally posted my cheque that morning; when I rang again on the Thursday because it hadn't arrived, someone else ...

First year premiums for a 15 year old cat were about £15 per month with Sainsburys PetCare. Aged 16 it went up to £24 (they said it was due to them changing underwriters), now I've got my renewal quote and I'm staggered. Cat is now 17 years and they want £46 per month (£554). Never made any claims so this seems extremely expensive.

My dog had a foreign body in her ear recently for which the vet had to operate immediately under general anaesthetic. Although my Sainsburys PetCare Pet Insurance claim was not a huge one (£150)there was no dispute about paying and a cheque was received within 2 weeks. Only complaint I have is that my premium went up by £10 a month, but this seems to be the norm.

I have had two dogs insured with Sainsburys PetCare Pet Insurance, one for 12 years and one for 9 years. I am now making regular claims for the older one, but have never claimed for the younger. The premium for the 9 year old has risen by £12 per month and I am dreading to find out how much the older one's premium will go up next month!! On querying the increase, I was told it was due to the breed (Cavalier King Charles Spaniels). What I think is so unfair, is that new customers are bei ...

I thought Sainsbury's were a respectable insurer until the time came to claim! After speaking to 2 claims advisers and receiving 2 letters regarding my claim for £450, on the third phone call (me to them), they told me that my policy had in fact been cancelled (they admitted it was their fault - human error!) and they refused to pay out. My complaint is now being escalated to AXA and I am in touch with the Financial Ombudsman - use this company at your peril!

i have been with sainsburys for 6 years and never made a single claim unitl now. This was a particulary nasty condition my pet picked up which is believed to be ongoing. However siansburys then turned around and said this will not be covered as it is pre-existing,i fought and argued my case and even my vet said this is not pre-existing at all but still they would not back down.so therefore i thought enough is enough.

Customer value nil! I have paid my premiums to Sainsbury's Petcare pet insurance for 5 years (2004). I have never claimed from them from what I can recall. This year i took my dog to vet for dermatitis and they have just sent a rather brief letter to say they won't be paying it! I may as well not have had insurance because the claim was for less than the premiums I paid.
I too was amazed at the amount of increase for premiums each year and as I hadn't claimed on policy reissued with the same ...

We have a 20 year old neutered tom cat who apart from visits to the vet has also seen a dermatologist, cardiologist, ophthalmologist, had various biopsies and recently had to have a front leg amputated following a possible road accident. We are delighted with the service from Sainsbury's Pet Care Insurance. Claims have always been met promptly and without quibble. You get what you pay for!!!

2.5 years ago I was insuring 2 dogs for the premium I'm now paying for 1 dog. I've never claimed until a small ear problem a few weeks ago. I could never have 2 dogs anymore as I just couldn't afford the insurance.
I'm now paying £39 per month for an Itaian Spinone. When I called and asked why the big hike in premium for a dog I've never claimed for they blamed medicines charges have risen by over 100% EU laws and animal medicines being re-licenced.

Sainsbury's PetCare Pet Insurance was OK until this year when the level of payment went from £21 to £54 a month. My greyhound has been covered no problem for a while and we have never made any claims. Premium more than doubled this year, cannot recommend.

My renewal this year has gone from £129 to £197 (all figures to nearest £1). This is for a 3 year old mongrel with no claims or history of illness. A quote on their website stated £138 inc 15% discount so full price should have been £162.
Also covering letter said policy remained the same when in fact the excess has risen from £50 to £75.
Next stop is to call their customer services and see what they have to say. I don't hold out much hope thou ...

Last year's premium for a 15 year old domestic cat was £177 with £50 or 15% excess, which I found reasonable given the level of cover. However my renewal notice has just arrived. I haven't made any claims but its gone up to £279 (an increase of £102) and the excess is now £125 or 15%. It says I've got 10 days to cancel from date of letter, but letter took a whole week to arrive!

Customer service at Sainsburys Pet Insurance is brilliant and the level of cover can't be touched...ok the premium is more than the others but thats simply because they don't offer as much.

My premium has gone from £32 per month to £70 and I have had no joy whatsoever. I am still waiting for a reply fro the customer services helpline after phoning 3 times in the last week. I have been with them for 10 years and have now had to cancel as the date for renewal is closing in, I am so disappointed with their treatment after I've paid in for so long.
Have decided to vote with my feet!

I was horrified when my renewal documents arrived, the premium quoted had more than doubled to over £500.00 - in words: five hundred pounds! for a four year old dog, no claims. This is due to the "selected breeds" invention - see above. Selected breeds means, I quote from their Policy booklet "Bulldog, Estrela Mountain dog, German Shepherd (Alsatian), Great Dane, Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound, Leonberger, Newfoundland, Old English Sheepdog, Rottweiler, Pyrenean Moutain Dog and St Bernard". I ...
