“I have never owned such a problem-prone and badly...”

★★☆☆☆

I have never owned such a problem-prone and badly built car. How long will Mercedes be able to cash in on their reputation for quality - not long I hope, since recent ownership of two cars has cost me a fortune in depreciation and both cars have been of awful quality.
The dealer has totally let me down.
Please don't get a Mercedes if you have a choice.

I agree. My 2000 Mercedes A170CDI shook itself to bits. The concept, fuel consumption, styling, and safety were fantastic, 10/10. Build quality was terrible. I have had a 1989 190E and two 1989 300TEs. The paint work was in better condition on them after 13 years than the A Class after 3 years. On the 300TE, it has had one spring replaced in 130,000 miles. The other had two spheres replaced after 210,000 miles. The A-class has had roll bar links, and rear swing arms all replaced in 40,000 miles. I know of three drivers who have had to replace all springs after 60,000 miles. I get a back ache after just 60 motorway miles. Shame really, great concept, rubbish build quality, Mercedes is riding on its past reputation. I swapped the 2000 A Class for a 1995 SAAB. The SAAB looked newer!

3 things you have to bear in mind here.
1-What you find in the UK are UK spec cars. These might not be the same quality spec that our european counterparts get, because, historically, we have been prepared to accept lower standards. After all, the Austin Cambridge was totally naff when compared to a Datsun 180B, but we loved 'em.
2-Mercedes, like VW, are having problems back home, so their cars are built to a price, not to a quality like they used to be. Then that price is hiked for the UK market, because they know we'll pay it.
3-The dealer franchise malaise. This is not just MB dealers, but the UK dealer market in general. Dealers charge over-inflated prices for their services and vehicles. Part of this is down to the franchise [MB] insisting what premises the dealer will have, and how much the dealer will charge. The dealer accepts, or gets out.
Vote with your wallet and find a decent specialist. They charge half the price of a dealer for the same spares and offer a better service.

Thank the lord I am not alone. If the general public knew just how poorly built these cars were they wouldn't believe it... and perhaps thats the problem. People just cant accept that MB are the worst cars on the market. They make FSO cars build quality look good.

I agree with the comments above about the quality of service from Merc dealers. We have a diesel Smart car for nipping around with, and while it was still under warranty, I took it to the Merc/Smart dealer in Sheffield for a service. Nothing wrong with it when it went in, nothing but problems since it came out. I am not going to pay them £75.00 per hour to sort out their problems.

We will never go back.

I agree, I would buy a BMW (Mercedes main rival)
with same sort of specs eg. SAT NAV, AIR CON 3.2 LITRE ENGINE and get way way better build quality, better reliability and it will not fall to bits as you drive it out of the showroom, in fact the BMW is so much more refined and well built I think it will never fall apart.I will never trust Mercedes cars as far as I could throw them, just buy a BMW, a company that still takes pride in Engineering excellence.
