“Utterly stupid bank rules, stupid customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 22/03/2013

I've held an ING account for almost 10 years now, and I have paid money into my account from just one other account only. After saving for a large deposit, it came time to withdraw my money, only ING will not allow me to do so without sending a cheque to them first. This is my money, and I want to transfer it to my account where all other payments for the last 10 years have gone from. People rarely use cheques these days, and having to deposit one to withdraw your own money is utterly stupid. The only other way is to close your account and receive a cheque. After speaking with Customer Services, I did send a cheque - for a penny. I don't want to transfer more money, after all. However, when they still refused to link the account they claimed I had to make payment of at least one pound. Why they didnt tell me this in the first place I don't know. Stay away from these clowns and save elsewhere.

“ING DIRECT Very Inflexable and terrible policies”

★☆☆☆☆

written by vchip on 05/10/2011

I had my mother set up with INGDIRECT for 2 years to get interest on her money. She has Alzheimer’s and I have a power of attorney for her. Since I set up the account and had all the passwords this was not a problem until we needed to file for Medicaid and I made the mistake of transferring the last funds back to her Regions Bank account and chose YES when asked if I wanted to close account. DO NOT EVER DO THIS is you want to ever get your data again. ING locks out your account and you can no longer get your transaction history or statements. It has taken me 5 phone calls, 2 secure emails and a fax just to get a letter for my Medicaid package that said the account was closed with a zero balance. It’s taken 2 more phone calls and 2 more faxes to finally get them to send to my mother her statements (not me). They do not recognize a power of attorney. I have NEVER had this much difficulty with a financial institution to provide documents for which I am legally entitled. BE CAREFUL the current low interest rates are not worth the fact that you have to deal with them by phone and their onerous policies. All their correspondence to me basically said TS.

“Appalling customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/08/2011

Although ING offer a competitive rate at times, they have no idea of the principles of treating customers fairly. They have this pathetic rule whereby if you opened up a direct savings account last week/month and they now have a new offer on for the same type of account, you are not allowed to close the existing one and transfer it over to one paying a better rate. After account closure you have to wait 6 months before you can apply for another direct savings account. I am not aware of any other company that shafts customers in this way.

“The ING savings account is one of the most cumbersome...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 14/03/2011

The ING savings account is one of the most cumbersome savings account site I have ever used (in 30 years of banking).

The security is hard to use: extremely hard to remember the details (you can't tailor it atall to things you remember more easily), to use the site (they have a wierd thing where you have to enter the numbers on a keypad) and extremely hard to reset (they drove me up the wall twice in my attempts to prove who I was who I said I was).

It's also difficult to transfer your money out: if you want to setup a new linked account you have to send in a £1 cheque to validate it first (which takes ages).

I have now transferred all my money out to somewhere where the interest is slight lower ... but at least I know I can actually get access to it when I need it.

This account should be re-named the "Difficult Access" account !

I would agree that ING savings accounts are soooo complicated.
Its really difficult to remember all the numbers you have to input online and its very easy to get locked out.
Despite being frustrated about having to have a pin sent out yet again to unblock my online account, a telephone advisor told me I was 'behaving strangely'.
Terrible customer service and I will be moving my account at the earliest opportunity.
thanks

went through the online process, entered all the information including providing payment details to submit initial payment to open account and setup standing order. Neither of these happened, also the items they said they would mail me never arrived.

So I called them and they said for security I had to send them a cheque for security reasons (these reasons were never really clear to me) writing on the back my address and date of birth. So basically everything a fraudster would need to the empty my bank account.

The customer service people were great explaining this to me, but it's crazy they would ask for such a thing. Looks like a good account but the process to open it is difficult and honestly not worth the trouble for fractions of a percentage point interest.

written by on 23/02/2010

I have recently had a fixed rate deposit mature which ING took over from one of the Icelandic banks part way through.
They have had almost 2 years to smooth any admin, yet despite being an existing ING customer they have dumped my money into a new account with a new customer number. The required information to allow me to access the new account arrived 1 week after maturity and although I can now see the money there is no withdrawl access to the funds without further paperwork and posting them bits. So by their actions they are effectively forcibly holding onto my money for what will end up being around 3 weeks at their lowest rate of interest (0.5%). I do hope they don't expect me to remain a customer now or in the future! Thank goodness I didn't need the funds urgently.

written by on 03/10/2009

I opened my ING Direct Savings account on Monday, entered an initial deposit and by Friday the same week was able to login online to my account and see the deposited capital and verify the direct debit account was correctly established. I was able to simulate a transfer out to my linked account to verify that this was also complete. I see no reason to phone the help centre as it is all very intuitive online and simple. They offer good interest rates in my opinion my limiting the wastage of resources spent on manning call centres which seem superfluous considering the ease of their website and shouldnt be compared with high street banks when opening accounts as these offer very poor competitive rates due to their high staff ratio dependency.

written by bobbinus on 29/10/2008

Quite simply, you would be mad to have your money in any of Australia's major banks "savings accounts". The interest on the ING savings account beats most term deposits, but leaves you with 24 hour delayed access to your funds. The Internet banking is very intuitive in terms of being able to monitor your balance, and the interest you have earned. I also established a Bank West Telnet savings account at the same time, because it has a marginally higher rate of interest, although I would say the downside with this account is that the Internet banking is not quite as intuitive.

Although it did take a couple of days to get the account started (which you would not have to deal with at a regular bank) the interest you earn from this account is worth it. If you can afford to transfer money weekly/monthly/quarterly, this account is right for you!

I opened the account about 3 year's ago. I've used the website and phone banking. Both have been fine, no problems to mention.
I've moved house and they have changed my details without any problems.
The ISA I recently opened was simple to set up and I've had no problems. A good, easy to use bank. It is let down by their interest rate.

written by on 11/01/2008

After my bank was closed, my funds were transferred to ING Direct. During this transition, a cheque bounced even though funds were available in the account. The customer service department at ING Direct were not helpful or empathetic to my difficulties. They are not refunding NSF fees that have been assessed even after I faxed extensive documentation of their error. I would not recommend this bank to my worst enemy.

“ING Direct Savings Account is the worst bank I ever...”

☆☆☆☆☆

written by edd123 on 10/05/2007

ING Direct Savings Account is the worst bank I ever worked with. I've set up a new account, deposit $50 and tried to enter my wife into the system, so she can also withdraw money without me. After 3 weeks I tried to set up an automatic saving plan, so $100 every month will be deposited automatically from my own BOA account. But I could not. Then I figured out I can not do anything on the web site. It always gives me the same error, to call the customer service.
I've called the customer service to find out what's going on, but I could not do anything either. They requested to speak to my wife, who does not have anything to do with the operation I try to do and who is outside the U.S. and will come in 1 year.
I couldn't even explain to the supervisor, that the account belongs to me, that the money is transferred from my account, that I opened the account, that I set up everything and that I want to put more money into that saving account.
I think they are not humans, maybe some sort of humanoids. They do not understand. You can include someone to your account without getting a question. But then after they will block your account until they speak to that person. If that person does not exists at all or can not speak English, you have to forget your money.
Couple hours ago I was trying to setup an automatic saving plan, now I'm trying to close my account and never visit this site again. Can you imagine there is a possibility you can loose your savings one day by clicking something wrong on the web site.
And as I told the supervisor that I'm going to close that account because of this inconvenience, he even did not care about it.
That's not a bank it's a web site, and the worst website ever. I love my regular bank. At least there is a building you can go and speak to someone in any case.
And I'm not sure about the FDIC approval. It looks like it is nothing more than an advertisement. How can I prove that I've an account in ING? I don't have any written statement. I don't have anything which proves that I have an account there. They also don't show up on credit reports. It is totally virtual, and today they blocked my account because I've tried to include a second person to my account. Tomorrow they can even take all the money out because another cause. There is nobody you can talk to.
Instead of gamble with 4.5% or nothing I would prefer to go to Las Vegas, at least it is 100% or nothing.

I have been waiting for more than two weeks to get my money. Each day I call I get a different answer. It will be going on three weeks with no interest gained, as interest stops when you call to close the ING Direct Savings account. They will make more than that $25 they offered me to open up the account. If they do this to thousands, they make millions by default; all by creating policies that stop the interest earned. That bit more of interest is simply not worth the aggravation!

I love ING Direct. It's got the best savings program that I've found. You earn 4.4% interest on your savings without having to lock up your money in a CD! It's easy to use, VERY secure and extremely convenient! Customer Service is just a toll free call away, and they have always been friendly and ready to help me resolve any issues I was encountering - which has rarely been the case! I can't say enough good things about this banking system.

Referrals earn $25 just for opening a new account and $10 for referring friends!

“From my former experience, I had never been able to...”

★★★☆☆

written by AverageJoe on 04/03/2006

From my former experience, I had never been able to make any money transfers or withdrawals after following required procedures to open a savings account with the amount of $100 US dollars with ING Direct for about three months or so. Within months of earning a tiny amount of interest from them, they finally sent me an e-mail stating as follows:

Dear ....
Customer Number: XXXXXXX745

At ING DIRECT, we strive to deliver services that are simple and efficient so we can provide the best possible deal for our customers. After reviewing your account, we've determined that we are unable to support your needs with the services we offer, and have decided to end our banking relationship with you.

Your account has been closed:

* The balance, plus any interest earned, has been sent back to the external, linked checking account used to establish the ING DIRECT Account.
* No further activity can take place and no additional deposits will be accepted.
* No additional accounts can be opened.

I once phoned them and one of their associates told me to submit a photocopy of my social security card in order to have my account be fully functional. Did any of you get asked for it?

In conclusion, don't hold your breath to be a long-term customer of ING Direct. You never know what tomorrow brings when they drop you three words: You Are Fired, to put it sarcastically. They will remove you without advance notice and end the business relationship with you once and for all. Simple as that!

Plinkyp's Response to AverageJoe's Review

Written on: 27/06/2006

I had almost the exact same thing! I switched banks in November 2004 and tried to link my ING account to my new bank. Well it's almost July 2006 and it is still not linked! I called to inquire about it and was told they couldn't do anything because they needed my social insurance number. I sent it to them. I called back because my account still wasn't linked. I was told that they weren't able to verify my SIN and I would have to resend it. There is only $11 in my account but I want it closed and can't do that because they won't set up the link to my account. The major hassle happened when I tried to change my address and phone number when I recently moved - they wanted copies of my phone bill to verify my phone number change (a quick call to my old number would give you a 'this number has been changed to...' message), and tons of documentation to verify my address change - funny thing is, when I moved a year earlier, they required no 'proof' to change my address.

I mailed a letter to them in May requesting my account be closed, and that I don't care what they do with the money! When I call them, they tell me they have my bank account in their system but won't let me have access it to withdraw my money... I haven't heard back from them since I mailed a letter to them, but I also can't get through to customer service - no response to my emails, and when I call them, I am on hold forever before I give up and hang up. I never had a problem getting hold of them before - I have a feeling they're just blocking my calls now! ha!

My partner and I have a joint savings account with ING. We're very happy with the access to the account and the fact that you get monthly interest on your savings.
You can withdraw or close the account at anytime without incurring a cost.
We're thinking of moving accounts at the moment though, just because the interest rate is dropping quite quickly, as of January it's going to be 4.5%.

written by elkcat on 14/06/2004

ING Direct Account opening appeared easy online until after 10 days I received my cheque returned (as there is no electronic transfer facility) because the christian name on bank account - Tony - did not correspond with the account name - Anthony - which they insisted on in the application. Call centre was a nightmare and staff were unhelpful and aloof even after I pointed out that I had not been called back as promised and lost 10 days interest on £72,000. They simply advised that 48-72 hours was standard for callbacks!

I wholeheatedly agree with you on this ridiculous procedure. Both my wife & I have given up on attempting to open a joint account. We were asked to each send a cheque in and we did so stating our full names on the cheque. (note: the same as the savings account name)Unfortunatly the printed name on the cheque read "Mr & Mrs Dod" (how pedantic is that!!?) so they didnt accept it. The assistant on the helpline was a little helpful & suggested we send in a recent bank statement with our full names on. This was however also sent back as it was not a "recent statement" (2 months old!)On calling back they also promised a responce within 48 hours and we are still waiting another week later. We have since given up & have opened a savings account with our bank which was opened in 10 minutes over the phone.

It depends on your definition of the "same name" - Tony is obviously a shortened version of Anthony to anyone with a modicum of brain cells, and has been acceptable by other financial institutions in many other instances. Besides, this is diverting attention from the main point I was making, which was the way ING dealt with the issue. i.e.very badly!
