I have an American Express card only because Costco does not accept other credit cards. Most small stores do not accept AE. Visa and MasterCards are much better to use. Here is my recent experience with American Express which makes me dislike the AE card even more. In the early days, only businesses can have costco/priceClub cards. I had mine through a friend who had a business. Earlier this year they closed their costco member, and I had to apply a new costco card. And has to apply for... (read more)

I paid off three credit cards in JULY 2012, called and got a 10 day payoff and they were only credit card company that does not offer this in writing. Paid off and mailed check, 4 days later check cashed, 12 days later posted. Got a check in the mail for an overpayment. The following month received a bill for $43.00 and called and told it was a mistake and they will remove the charge. The following month a charge of over $70.00 showed and called. I rarely use this AE card, while I was traveling I made a purchase on the card. American Expres never sent me a bill (paper or electronic) I forgot about it and since I never received a bill I did not pay the account. Eventually they sent me an electronic notice that my account was delinquint and it had been suspended. I immediately paid it off and called them to investigate the problem. I would definitely not recommend AMEX Blue. I had that card for 3 years at a 9% APR. I have never missed a payment with AMEX, or with any of my credit card bills, or other loans. AMEX kindly repaid my good credit and responsible living by almost doubling my interest rate. It went from 9% to 17.8%. I wasn't allowed to close my card or opt out either. The rate applied to PAST purchases. Buyer beware...I don't want this to happen to anyone else. (read more)

Basically, American Express pays me to use their credit card. As long as you pay your credit off each month, you will earn money for spending money. As with all things in life, if you are organised and play by the rules you will not have too many problems. If you are good with credit cards i.e. you pay in full every month and don't abuse transfers/advances, then blue is a good card to have. Well okay, the cashback feature seems very attractive, IF it works. My bad experiences started when I noticed a significant shortage in my first year's cashback. There is a threshold of $6500, and once you have reached that your cashback rate becomes higher - i.e. if you spend more than $6500 you are supposed to receive 5% cashback on everyday purchases, and 1.5% on everything else. Before that the percentages are 1% and 0.5%. So clearly, if you spend more than $6500 you have to receive 6500... (read more)

The American Express Blue Credit card affords a fantastic opportunity for the young professional to join the Amex club and try to squeeze some benefits out of it. In Australia, you can get it with an income of 25k AUD annually or more, so that's quite achievable even on the minimum wage. It doesn't suck money for card fees, and the point systems are exactly the same as the charge card or standard credit card that are defended with exclusivity. I had always wanted an American Express card since my wife and I do a lot of international travel. The problem with most AE cards is that there are annual fees. I think credit carda are fantastic money management tools. They allow you to maximise the interest that you earn on your hard earned money. The American Express Blue Credit Card also adds the bonus of Cashback.
This is like earning 1% interest on your spending so you can actually make money out Amex if you pay your bill in full every month (like I do). Suckers! That's probably why they sent me "invitations" first for the Gold charge card (£95 p.a. fee) and then for the Platinum (£275... (read more)

If you pay off the balance on your credit card every month then you don't need to worry about interest rates - cash back on purchases is more important. Most cards these days give 0.5% cash back at the most, whereas Amex Blue gives you 1% cash back. That adds up to a lot over the space of a year. Highly recommended. (read more)
