THE NFU MUTUAL CONTACTED ME AFTER THEIR CUSTOMER CRASHED INTO MY CLASSIC BEDFORD MOTORHOME WHICH WAS PARKED OUTSIDE MY HOUSE (21st sept 2012) MY VEHICLE ACTED AS A BUFFER TO A LITTLE PUEGEOT CAR WITH FOUR YOUNG FEMALE PASSENGERS, 20 MINUTES EARLIER I WAS NOT HOME,THE CAR WOULD HAVE CRASHED INTO A SOLID UNMOVEABLE STONE WALL, THE GIRLS WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY SERIOUSLY INJURED, POSSIBLY FATALY. AS IT WAS THEY WERE UNHARMED. MY VEHICLE WAS SHUNTED UP ONTO THE PAVEMENT AND 4 METRES FORWARD, IT... (read more)

I should point out first, that one incentive for going with NFU Mutual for my car insurance - as well as an unexpectedly reasonable quote over the phone - was their good reviews on here, a reassuring oasis in the desert of poor customer service that seems depressingly, to be associated with this "industry". I liked (and still do like) the fact that you phone their office - Newport, in my case - and speak to someone sitting in an office and not a call centre. I had a conversation not so long... NFU are using pricing to drive people away. I have insured all my vehicles, buildings, comtents, and company insurances with them for far too long. My daughter at university is a named driver to use our Fiat Punto when she comes home. She is now about to leave university, set up house in Kingston upon Thames and has a job to go to. I understand and appreciate young drivers pose a higher risk and hence why our premiums were higher, but NFU quoted her £4649.76 fully comprehensive. I... (read more)

After 5 years of cover, max no claims, recent renewal for my Land Rover Defender renewal was up by 60% on previous year. Local office (Uckfield) could barely have been less helpfull. They have since lost my domestic insurance, for similar reason. (read more)

Insured a horsebox for a year (no claims or changes). At renewal time the premium had gone up a whopping £51 or some 30% of the total. The very unhelpful guy on the 'phone wasn't interested in trying to match a lower quote from elsewhere but patronisingly tried to upsell me breakdown cover and a fully comprehensive policy. He also told me that, as premiums had gone up on average 40% across the industry (oh yes?), I was being offered a good deal. Don't waste your time with these people -... (read more)

In five years I have twice had need to contact NFU regarding insurance. The first time I contacted them my parked Land Rover was hit by a drunk driver (also insured by NFU) and destroyed. The aggressive and unreasonably minimal settlement meant that I effectively lost that vehicle, being as a result of NFU unable financially to replace it. The second time I contacted them was in relation to an accident abroad which was the admitted fault of the driver of a lorry. NFU have spend a great... (read more)

have had two vehicles insured with nfu of ramsbottom for years, then they joined Bury and the service since then has been nothing short of shocking.three times i waited for a call back from staff, but never got one, sometimes it took 40 mins for staff to answer phone!surely they cant be that busy. One of my policies increased from £420 to £1150-no claims, convictions etc,the other rose from £1600 to £2800!!!phoned them and they didnt give a toss, even after telling them i could get the same... Have insured with NFU Mutual in the Scottish Borders for over 20 years. Household buildings, contents & personal possessions policy is excellent and extremely competitive. HOWEVER, our 2 cars - 5 door hatch and 7 seater mpv have rocketed this year. Insured & Spouse only; Pro NCD: £250 vol excess - 2010 premium was £434. 2011 premium £592. Both in our early 40s. I am loathe to change as it is a face to face company; local phone number; no call centres but such a jump is a right kick in... (read more)

We insure everything car, house, equipment with the NFU. Always, liked the set up having a local branch, easier than spending hours on the phone to a call centre. HOWEVER, premiums on the whole this year seemed to have soared and the NFU seem out of touch and out of our scope. There are no rewards for insuring everything with them. I'm loathed to leave but our house and car renewal premiums have increased despite no claims whatsoever, what if we needed to claim, what would it do to... (read more)

On renewal this time, my premium went up 59%; there had been a windscreen replaced, nil else. They took 4 shots last year and 6 this year to get the paperwork in order. I have changed insurers to one that got the paperwork right first try. The local office is trying. On paper, they're good, with lots of good reviews and good cover, inpractice I'm sure other companies can do a competent job for less money. (read more)

After having cars insured with NFU for years, including the car I now want to re insure with them after having taken it off the road on a sorn just to re MOT it They will now not insure us, despite still having another car with them.

for a number of years we have had my car and my wifes car insured with NFU and our kids have borrowed our cars sometimes so they have all been named occasioal drivers. We have insured through NFU for a decade now. The agent we use is NFU Telford. They could not be more helpful but NFU's policy of penalising young drivers is utterly DISGRACEFUL.
NFU is just telling us it is no longer a 'family-insurance' company, just there to take the 'juicy' bits.
So, who really owns NFU Insurance? It claims to be member-owned ( Mutuality) but this just shows it to be no better than the rest!
My advice...go for the cheapest...which is NEVER NFU!!! (read more)

Superb throughout, from initial enquiry to recent settlement (a Royal Mail van reversed into me).
Faultless service throughout AND the best quote. You won't find these guys on comparison sites as they don't need the advertising. My Dad is an extreme miser and fusspot with his finances and he's switched to NFU. I used the Exeter branch.
Apparently they aren't cheap for young men in fast cars! (read more)

NFU were useless. I had an accident that was no fault of my own. The other driver's insurance company rang me on the day of the accident to say that their driver had accepted full liability and to tell NFU to send them the bill. NFU then lent me a car and overcharged the other company which meant they then took the car away when the other firm refused to cover the costs. NFU offered no explanation and refused to tell me what was happening with my claim for around 2 weeks. Eventually, NFU... (read more)

I have just arranged to cover my fully comp. car insurance through NFU Mutual (including business use). I spoke to a real person who obviously knew what they were doing - and had a sense of humour. The price was almost as cheap as those on the comparison websites and the policy terms were exceptionally better (e.g. no compulsory excess; courtesy car; free windscreen chip repair and glass replacement for £50). A minimal charge to pay monthly and no deposit clinched the deal. They also offered... (read more)

I went to these guys after reading some of the reviews here. I had a nasty experience with one of the cheap on line companies and decided to try the NFU who appeared to be a little more old fashioned. Initially i sent a internet request to the branch in marlow and they were slow to call me back, so i called them. My details were taken and later that day i was called back with a quote which was not the cheapest but was not too bad.
All in all i would recommend these for the following... (read more)

Farmers Union is not the cheapest insurance out there so if you just want cheap look at other places like Geico. I have had the cheap guys and they never live up to what you expect. I've been with the NFU for a number of years and would recommend them to anybody. The best thing of all, you call there office and you don't select 1, 2 or press hash key, A REAL PERSON ANSWERS!! And as an earlier reviewer mentioned you generally speak to the same person. You also get a courtesy car after an accident and window and windscreen repairs by AUTOGLASS where you only have to pay the excess (£25 last time I think). No other company was willing to insure me, a learner driver, on a Suzuki Jimny because it was an SUV. The fact that its top speed is about 75mph, and it's acceleration is rubbish didn't seem to change their mind about its SUV status. However, National Farmers Union offered a discount on SUV's, and they have been friendly and helpful.
