“It is a useful mobile phone, and it's the third...”

written by inswitz on 19/09/2006

It is a useful mobile phone, and it's the third generation Sony I have had. However, as it went past it 12 month life, it started to effectively fall apart. The battery discharges alarmingly quick. OK, I could get a new one. The power connector socket is broken, and I get an intermittent ring tone when someone calls - I have not figured this one, but it could flip into silent mode. When the Sony Ericsson K700i charges, without any amendment to settings, it beeps, which is fine if you can charge it up away from earshot.

It is a phone designed for 12 months use. My Sony J70 is still going strong, but it has had less use as I use it as a reserve, but it is an old phone. Where did the Sony reliability go?

The joystick on my Sony Ericsson K700i mobile phone doesn't work properly, and as time goes by it gets worse. I have spoken to a few other people who have the same phone, and they have the same problem!
It also has poor battery life.

“I am a heavy phone user. You will never catch me...”

★★☆☆☆

written by krissyyy on 16/03/2006

I am a heavy phone user. You will never catch me without my phone. I so not recommend the Sony Ericsson K700i mobile phone to anyone who uses their phone to the extent I do. Battery life is poor and only lasts one or two days. However, I have learnt to put it on charge every night. Pictures are blurry unless you stand extremely still. Memory is poor and unexpandable, but this may not effect you if you do not wish to use it as an MP3 player. Otherwise it seemed to be a reasonably good phone.

I bought it in July 2005, and it was fine until 2 - 3 months later. The charger would not connect properly, and the joystick had become faulty. It would also freeze and I would have to take the battery out to turn it off and on again. I took it back to Carphone Warehouse for a repair as I still had my one year guarantee. They took it for 2 weeks, and when it was returned it seemed OK for about 2 weeks but then it slipped back into it's old ways.

I have lived with it until recently, and it has become extremely slow, and today it was even telling me that my phone was charging when I was on the bus. What's going on here?!?

The Sony Ericsson K700i mobile phone, is neither bad or good, but I am just biased against flip-phones. Only get it if you don't mind a compromise.

“Seeing it and advised that it was a great phone,...”

written by Stuart Ibb on 11/06/2005

Seeing it and advised that it was a great phone, overall the K700i is one of the worst phone I have used in my whole life. I had a Nokia before, which had over 7 years of use, yes it got a bit battered but works fine, after 6 months of the K700i it's beginning to show how cheap it is. Also one main issue which happens a lot on most K700i phones (4 out of 5 people who own a K700i) say when you answer a call there is a delay of a few seconds before the other person can hear you, Be aware that the battery charge connection becomes lost easier which means that you might think you are charging but you are not. They have repaired it twice and it's still happening. Basically when the upgrade comes along I'll be off back to Nokia, the trusty safe and solid phones.

Received phone in Sept 04 camera wouldn't work had a replacement and the new one keeps locking up and you have to remove the battery to reboot it. When it has rebooted some numbers vanish from the phonebook. O2 say it is a common fault with the handset. Not impressed at all.

written by desdesigner on 11/01/2005

I had an SE K700i handset as a temporary replacement while my present one was fixed and at first I loved the handset but the buttons seem to let it down as does the crummy orange firmware. There is a back button and a clear button. From previous experience, clear meant back.

Not impressed SE. For £200+, I would rather buy a 2nd hand SGH-D500.

written by woodybiggly on 10/11/2004

Just received the K700i today, and on first impressions it'll be going back to Orange sooner rather than later. Maybe owning a Nokia for so long has spoilt me, but the K700i is the most frustrating phone I've owned.
Sure the screen is very sharp and clear, but the menu's just don't seem to be user friendly, and I keep pressing the wrong button on the keypad. I don't think I got huge fingers either...
For such a new phone the quality of the ring tones dont impress either... sure I can download new ones, but surely Sony should try to impress with something more special in this department.
This was a phone I really wanted to like, but it just doesn't do it for me.

Do take it back and change networks to 02 or BT Mobile. They haven't wrecked the menus like Orange. Vodafone have wrecked the menus too. The original menus are fine. And the ringtones. You can use an edited MP3!

“Had a T610 previously, even though the phone was poor...”

written by flooringman on 22/07/2004

Had a T610 previously, even though the phone was poor I found the bluetooth a real asset. Being talked around by an Orange upgrade person to go for the K700 was a big mistake. My bluetooth would not connect properly and the battery was very poor (about a days normal use). All I can say is that the picture quality was very good, but saying that so was my T610 at the beginning and know the screen has almost defunked. Also they seem to like to put useless photos that you cannot delete, I found this frustrating with the T610 when running out of memory, surely they learned there lesson. Dodgy zoom also, could only get it to work on video at x2.

Just read your review and although you are entitled to your opinion I have to say that I completely dissagree. You can't compare the K700 to the T610, firstly it uses a completely different camera with a more sensitive sensor and higher resoloution & the screen is almost twice the resolusion. With regard to the bluetooth I have connected to both a T630 & my PC via a BT USB dongle without any problem at all. As for the menu system with exception to Nokia its the most intuitive and easy to use phone on the market, that is the one thing that the T610 was good for. On the whole this is an excellent phone well made with excellent features.

You can get way higher res than 640x480. Just press one when in the camera mode and it changes res. lower res means you can zoom too. and if you chnage options you can get double res at 640x480. Although you wouldn't think you should be able to. Also see review 6 about improving battery life.

You can get x4 zoom when you change the video size to 128x96 pixels. When the video size is 176x144 then you can only get x2 zoom. Hope that helps with your problem.

I have the k700 as well, my Bluetooth connection 'struggles' too.
Don't know if it's the fone of the dongle. (or the software)
Camera looks good, but its only 640x480 res, (about 300k res) that is like any camera phone.
If you want resolution go for Siemens S65 at 1.3 mega pixels.
