I had been paying insurance for over twenty years when I needed to make a claim. The loss adjusters who take over the claim are a nasty bad mannered arrogant company. They decide everything, you have no say on what you can claim for. Beware if you agree for them to take over the repairs, you should be happy for what you get, and if anything gets damaged while they do this its a consequence and not a result of your claim and you can not claim for it. I had water damage and the floor... (read more)

We share a garage structure with our neighbour. And she managed to reverse through the back wall damaging her and our property. Clearly liable, they refused to provide us with a contact with their insurance company, a policy or claim number. We did receive an Excel offer that a child could put together for repairs. No guarantee, and no official contact from Dealing with the coop has been a long road of 0845 numbers, people who are not able to advise and no less that three seperate external... (read more)

I have never experienced a simpler claim process. I had lost a bag of climbing equipment on the train so I called to claim. After logging the loss I was called back by someone else to quantify the loss. I explained what was in the bag in some detail and they said "OK we'll transfer the money (less the excess) in the next few days". After a 5 min phone call they were happy to pay out with no further evidence or receipts. (read more)

Reported incident, received verbal encouragement that claim was valid before claim was passed to a claim handler ( loss adjuster). These people didn't call back when they said and you have to keep chasing. Unless you have a brand new property forget this company as the adjusters claim that everything is degraded through time (although no one will give you a guide as to what you need to do to comply). It would appear that the only people who ever receive a payment from the co- op... (read more)

I took out emergency cover with my home insurance. You phone up to make a claim, After ages of listening to all the options, you are finally told you to phone another number, you go through a similar set of options. Finally, you get put through to a claims handler, who does not have your details, so they have to go back to the co-operative. They finally ring you back, argue that you aren't covered (when you clearly are) they then grudgingly send out a man, who arrives late, does not have... (read more)

After a fire in my kitchen cooker when luckily we were in the house i was told i was not covered on my policy as it was mechanical damage!!!!!!!!!!!. After questioning this as afire not being mechanical dameage i went through numorous different personnel trying to resolve the issues i found them all to be "stupid" as they all seemed to be reading from scripts. The whole process seems to be "how can we stop the claim" When you take out insurance you would expect a "fire" to be covered on the... (read more)

My parents bedroom carpet was flooded and it was very stressful. I had to make the claim on my father's behalf as he is profoundly deaf. I was told they needed to speak to the policy holder so my dad was stood right next to me. I told the CO-OP insurance lady if I could ask him the security questions and he would reply. She refused this even though she spoke to my father, although he could not hear her. My dad was confused and his hearing aid was ringing, he's 83. I was simply trying... (read more)

I did insure via Britannia with a reputable insurance company but as Britannia was taken over by Co op I was pointed in the direction of the Co operative insurance services. I am beginning to wonder what its for? It does not cover my titatium glasses, it does not cover any pet damage. I am changing as I no confidence in this insurance and therefore no peace of mind (read more)

My 74 year old, arthritic mother had burst pipes in her house. 2 days later she is still standing in water with no heat, light or water on one of the coldest days of the year. She called the co-op who sent a plumber out over 24 hours later. He did nothing and said he'd be back the next day. Mom phoned co-op and they said they couldn't contact the plumber as there was no one in the office (dynorod have a 24 hour service). I am absolutely disgusted by this and would urge anyone thinking of... (read more)

We had a flood in our house over a year ago and needed to replace our carpet but for various reasons did not want to put a new one in straight away. I phoned the Coop at the time and I found the man on the phone almost too helpful; being so flexible about my options as to make it difficult for to decide the best way to act. However, since we assured me I had up to six years to make a claim, I was reasonably happy. When we were in a position to have a new carpet fitted (over a year and half... (read more)

Having read some of the comments here I am guessing that people only usually leave a review if they have had a bad experience, which is a shame because you often do not get to hear the other side.
I claimed recently for some items that were stolen from my house. The claim was dealt with very promptly, by friendly agents. I had replacement items within TWO WEEKS of claiming !
In short I would not hesitate to recommend Co-op Home insurance. Also part of the ethical coop group :)

Previously I would have happily recommended CIS as they are part of the Co-operative Family of businesses, but a slow process of attrition has now seen me finally move after a 5 1/2 years with them. These include:
- Cost is high. I had a 40% protected no claims discount. Yet the quote still came in far higher than most comparitors.
- I got married last summer and dispite my wife having a claim free history, I could not transfer to a joint policy and protect my no claims discount. It would...

My daughter, prior to renewing her home contents cover, 'phoned to increase the financial amount of cover. The telephone sales person at CIS spent nearly 10 minutes pressing my daughter to cover valuables she does not have and to take accident cover she didn't want etc and in spite of refusing this cover then spent time getting a quote. My daughter who was tending her baby stopped the call in the end and sought cover elsewhere. A very poor customer service experience and puts you right off... (read more)

I paid my HOME CONTENTS premiums by a deposit and 10 monthly premiums. I wrote to them half wat through life of policy to point out that risk profile had changed as double occupancy had become single occupancy and asked if premium reduction applied. No answer by end of policy. But worse was to follow, even though I told them I would not renew policy upon expiration in writing 4 months in advance; upon expiration of the policy proceeded to reinstate my 10 month direct debit and pay themselves... Just going through a claim. Have been waiting 8 months, and the conservatory is almost sorted out, but not built. The contents though...
They are giving us a computer and laptop that is now cheaper then when we got it, and there seems to be many debates on the prices. They don't trust us at all! And then they are only getting some of the stuff, we might get vouchers or money, but no one is sure.
They have made a terrible effort to sort this out. I mean, 8 months so far!
I do not recommend,...

We have a buy to let property and used CIS as we have our own home insurance with them. Well it is not worth the paper is written on. Our tenants stopped paying rent in Jan 2010. Served them notice in Mar 2010. End of six months tenancy was 10 April (they had been there a year). They failed to leave so went through the court process which was end of June and they were still there. By the time they left they had broken a window, taken the keys (hence had to change locks), trashed the... (read more)

I think it would be very rare for a domestic house insurance policy to pay out for unpaid rent. If the coop had done this then I would not be buying insurance from them, on the basis that this is not a very good use of my premiums. Letting out houses on a commercial basis is a profitable but risky business, and requires commercial insurance (and a hefty commercial premium)

The Co-operative Insurance are happy to accept your money but more than reluctant to pass any back. A refund of £18.52 has been due on the Buildings Insurance cover of my mother's bungalow since 2nd October 2009 when the property was sold following her death. You have hit the nail on the head there. They will happily take your money for 33 years in my case but not pass it back. The CO-OP have no ethics, they have ruined their previous good standing and they are simply a corporate machine incapable of good practice.

I have been with the CIS since 2002; I have enjoyed hassle free service until my daughter knocked my laptop off the couch. The laptop was faulty and wouldn't power up. I called the CIS to make my first ever claim, they asked a series of questions and then said they would be in touch. A few days later I got a call from a third party company who said they were working on behalf the CIS. Having recently moved house I decided to switch my home contents insurance and chose CIS as they were by far the cheapest, over £100 cheaper than Churchill or Direct Line who were the second cheapest. Thankfully not had to claim yet but when I have rung customer services I was on hold for a long time but did get through to a UK-based call centre who dealt with my query reasonably quickly and politely. Claimed for a accident with my camcorder, was subjected to a 45 minute grilling by the home insurance assessor. Trial by telephone! The CIS then forgot about the claim and eventually paid out weeks later, with a voucher for Dixons! Dreadful.
Also claimed for storm damage - CIS mislaid the claim again. The work was eventually carried out 3 months later.
Stay clear of this company. Their investments are even worse!

I have held home insurance with CIS for 15 years, having made only 1 small claim for a mountain bike during this period. I tried to claim for a digital camera that was either taken or mislaid from my home, but it never turned up. Having thought I would be covered for this kind of thing, I was told that I couldn't claim. I used to have two cars insured by CIS as well as my buildings and contents insurance.
Now all three are done by Tesco.
CIS were great with my claim but their agent is hopeless (in my area). Never phones, never turns up on time.
The office is not much better - when I rang them to say I had a cheaper quote instead of asking if any circumstances had changed to keep my business (worth about £1500 pa) their attitude was "bye".
They sent me a renewal notice THREE weeks after it had...

Don't concern yourself with other people's experiences, just write your own review as this is just biasing otherwise. People are intelligent enough to discern for themselves and make their own judgements from all reviews so there is no need to try and balance things up if you have had a positive experience. Everyone should be as satisfied as you were and unfortuantely this is just not the case.
