Maytag Neptune Washing Machine - I have the stacked Washer Dryer MLE2000AYW.
For you information, each of the models has different characteristics and so it's really worth differentiating between models instead of classifying all models as the same.
It was only after having problems that I found this site and this really cool fix it site: http://fixitnow.com/2004/03/war-story-maytag-neptune-stack-laundry.htm
The fixitnow site gave me clues as to the problems the machine had. I found that my machine had a burnt out R43 resistor and a burnt out fuse on the motor control board. I replaced the R43 with parts from Radio Shack, but I had to replace the motor control board completely and the motor to fix the problem. I got these parts from:

Total parts cost: $240. (Labor I did myself) I view that as pretty reasonable given that's the only fixes I've done since we got it.

Our Maytag Neptune is 4 1/2 years old and I do NOT have an extended warranty. I read this site before calling for service about the machine not locking and not spinning. I told them I was aware of the many problems with this machine (as well at the class-action suit) and simply asked what Maytag was doing for their Neptune customers. I was told that once the problem was diagnosed, if it was these parts, that Maytag would "help out" in some way. Well, the repair man came out and the first thing he said was "This is an expensive repair". He would have charged me but I told him what was told to me, so he called and they agreed to cover all the parts. I did pay for the labor, but I think this was a fair resolution and good customer service on Maytag's part. Everyone should read the internet posts before calling to have repairs done. If I had not this would have been very expensive. Thanks for all the posts!

I would just like to say my mother has had her neptune 3000 (which is the very 1st model) for almost 7 yrs (she bought it in the end of 1997) and the only issue she had was the door not locking (wax motor and control board). We had a tech come out and told us to call for a pha kit. When I called into the cust svc I was told that the pha kit was for mold only and not for unit not locking. I talked to the young lady and she advised me that maytag had been replacing the pha kits for mold for 2 years now and the reason they aren't anymore is b/c some (not all) servicers like the one i had come out told me to get it for the unit not spinning. The example she gave me was " Say Maytag made 10 washers, Each washer gets 1 kit, maytag has sent out 25 kits....you do the math." When my mother bought this washer she gave me her old Maytag that is 22 yrs old. I was brought up with the understanding that these are man-made and things can fail. That is what the warranty is for, and if your warranty is up get an extended warranty. If you did not get an extended warranty then it is your fault...You should have to pay for the repairs. When my mom bought the unit she was told about the warranty and she was told she would have to pay any out of warranty repairs. So when maytag told me she would have to pay for the parts i did not mind. I got a quote on an extended warranty it is cheaper then 1 labor charge. I am just sick of people bad mouthing Maytag b/c they are a good company with friendly customer service. If you would run the freshen tips they tell you and clean the unit then you would not have mold. I hate seeing these reviews where people say "MY Kennmore lasted 15 years" well your kennmore was not a front loader and my maytag lasted 22 and is still going. If you would like to respond my email Address is [email protected].

The door lock problem on the Maytag Neptune washers is a design flaw that should have been corrected by Maytag free of charge regardless of warranty. Of course this will not happen and the customer is stuck paying the bill. (Around $300.00 in parts & labor). This malfunction happens to new and older machines. Age has nothing to do with this failure. What happens is that the door lock wax motor (stupid design to begin with) shorts out and blows the machine control board. At this point both need to be replaced. There is no circuit protection built into the control board as Maytag should have done.
<br>On the latest machines (+2003?) this flaw was finally addressed and hopefully fixed.

I'm not going to say my Maytag Nepture washing machine is the best washer I've ever owned. That one was a Speed Queen, but the company that makes Speed Queen also makes bombs and I just can't knowingly support that kind of business. Over all, the Neptune has worked well. I must admit that you can't put as many clothes into the machine as the salesman at Best Buy told me, but it does a decent job. When you're washing towels or jeans, be very careful not to overload the machine otherwise you might ruin the door seal. It's a shame when you can only wash five towels or four pairs of jeans at a time when the salesman said to stuff it full. The worst thing that's gone wrong with the machine is the door seal wore out too soon. At the time it was over a year so I had to pay for labor part of the charge to replace the seal at $150.00. Since then, I've come to realize that Maytag knows that the door seal is a problem and I feel they should have paid 100% to replace the seal. The replacement seal has holes for drainage where the original door seal had no holes, which is why I believe it failed in the first place. Since there was a design change I feel I was robbed for the labor charge when they should have picked up the tab. Will I buy another Maytag product? I'm not sure. I own a Maytag gas range where the oven thermostat failed just over a year of ownership and again I had to pay the labor on the repair. My Magic Chef Gas range lasted 9 years and we sold it with the house when we moved.

I just called today to have a Maytag service person come and look at my 4 year old "will not Spin" Neptune MHA4000AWW. I scheduled the appointment and then talked with customer service and told them I knew this was going to be an expensive repair and could they help me out. Suprisingly they said they would cover all parts cost and also replace my gasket even though this one has the new version (mold culprit) with a new one at no cost but the $120 service call. My fingers are crossed they will fix it Monday! Yeah, clean underwear, maybe Monday!
